Connect the wall’s coaxial cable to the cable box’s Cable In port, run an HDMI cable from the box to the TV, plug in the box, then use the TV remote to select that HDMI input. The coax carries the cable service to the box; HDMI carries the box’s picture and sound to the TV. Both connections, plus power, are needed.

Connect the coaxial cable from the wall outlet to the box port labeled Cable In. Tighten the connector by hand. If the outlet is already connected to another device, consult the instructions for your box model about using a splitter.

Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of the cable box and the other end into an HDMI input on the TV. Note the input label or number, such as HDMI 1.

Connect the cable box’s power cord and plug it into an electrical outlet.

Turn on the TV. With the TV remote, choose the HDMI input you used. The button may be labeled Input, Source, or TV/Video. The Optimum Scientific Atlanta cable box HD-TV setup guide gives the same instruction: “Using your TV’s remote (not the Optimum remote), on screen select the input port you chose in Step 3 by pressing the input, source or TV/video button.” This is about selecting the TV input, not pairing or programming the cable remote.

Allow the box to start or complete activation. The documented Optimum Samsung guide says activation begins automatically and takes several minutes. The exact activation steps depend on the box model.

Suddenlink-era equipment does not have one universal activation sequence. The official Optimum guides located for this setup describe different behavior on different boxes:

These are model-specific instructions, not steps to apply to every cable box. Optimum’s user-guide index lists separate Samsung HD, Samsung non-HD, and Optimum TV Box setup guides. If your box’s display or ports differ, identify its model and use its matching guide. The available guides do not establish a compatibility list for every TV and Suddenlink box combination.

If the TV shows no picture
Start with the basic connections in the setup sequence:

Confirm the TV is set to the same HDMI input where the box is connected.

If these checks do not help, identify the box model and consult its provider guide or support channel. The setup guides do not provide a complete diagnostic procedure for every no-picture or “no signal” situation, so avoid guessing at TV-specific settings.
Do you need a new HDMI cable?
Not necessarily. The Optimum Samsung guide describes an HDMI cable as provided with the box. Use the cable you have if it is suitable and works; replace it only if you do not have one or suspect the existing cable is faulty. The setup guides do not specify a required HDMI version, cable length, or resolution rating.
