The simplest connection is from the amplifier’s SUBWOOFER PRE OUT or PRE OUT to the line-level input of a powered (active) subwoofer using an RCA cable. If the amplifier has no pre-out, use a powered subwoofer with HIGH LEVEL or SPEAKER LEVEL IN and connect it from the amplifier’s left and right speaker terminals with speaker wire. Turn both units off before wiring, preserve left/right and positive/negative polarity, then set crossover, gain and phase so the subwoofer blends with the main speakers.
Identify the outputs and inputs before connecting anything
An integrated stereo amplifier combines a preamplifier and power amplifier in one chassis. Its rear panel may provide one of three useful signal paths to a subwoofer:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- SUBWOOFER PRE OUT: A dedicated, usually mono, line-level output intended for a powered subwoofer.
- PRE OUT L/R: Left and right line-level outputs that can feed a subwoofer’s corresponding left and right inputs.
- Speaker terminals only: Left and right amplified outputs that can feed a subwoofer’s high-level inputs.
The subwoofer must contain its own power amplifier for either of these methods. Look for LINE IN, SUB IN, or RCA inputs when using a pre-out. Look for HIGH LEVEL IN or SPEAKER LEVEL IN when using speaker terminals. A passive subwoofer does not have that internal amplifier and needs a suitable external power amplifier; do not plug it directly into a line-level pre-out.
Manufacturers describe these same arrangements in their documentation. Denon identifies PRE OUT as the connection for a subwoofer with a built-in amplifier, while Onkyo specifies connecting a powered subwoofer’s LINE INPUT to the integrated amplifier’s PRE OUT: SUBWOOFER terminal. Rotel documents both its left/right PRE OUT route and speaker-level route for powered subwoofers.

Choose the correct connection route
| Amplifier output | Subwoofer input | Cable | Volume behavior | Wiring and controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SUBWOOFER PRE OUT | LINE IN or SUB IN (RCA) | Usually a mono RCA subwoofer cable; use the input specified by the subwoofer manual | Normally follows the amplifier’s volume control | One cable; crossover, gain and phase are set on the subwoofer |
| PRE OUT L/R | LINE IN L/R | Stereo RCA cable, left to left and right to right | Normally follows the amplifier’s volume control | Two signal channels; subwoofer crossover, gain and phase remain available |
| Speaker terminals L/R | HIGH LEVEL or SPEAKER LEVEL IN L/R | Speaker wire | Tracks the same volume changes as the main speaker outputs | More wiring; preserve polarity and channel identity; use the subwoofer’s crossover, gain and phase controls |
Use the first route your equipment supports. If there is no dedicated subwoofer output but stereo PRE OUT L/R exists, that is still a line-level connection. If the amplifier has no pre-out at all, select a powered subwoofer with high-level inputs rather than trying to adapt a line-level-only model.
Route 1: connect a SUBWOOFER PRE OUT to an RCA input
This is usually the least complicated arrangement because the amplifier provides a dedicated subwoofer feed.
- Power down completely. Switch off the integrated amplifier and subwoofer, then disconnect their AC power before inserting or removing cables. Yamaha’s connection guidance specifically cautions against making wiring changes while equipment is powered.
- Find the connectors. On the amplifier, locate a socket labeled SUBWOOFER PRE OUT, PRE OUT: SUBWOOFER, SUB OUT or a similar dedicated label. On the subwoofer, locate LINE IN or SUB IN.
- Connect the RCA cable. Run one RCA cable from the amplifier’s subwoofer output to the subwoofer input named in its manual. A subwoofer with separate left and right RCA inputs may instruct you to use its L/mono input for a single cable; follow that labeling rather than guessing.
- Reconnect power and switch on. Turn on the amplifier and subwoofer at a low volume. Select the amplifier source that normally feeds your speakers.
- Set the subwoofer controls. Begin with the low-pass control near the natural bass roll-off of your main speakers, set gain conservatively, and adjust phase while listening for the smoothest transition.
Onkyo’s documented arrangement is LINE INPUT on a powered subwoofer to the integrated amplifier’s PRE OUT: SUBWOOFER terminal. Monoprice documentation likewise describes LINE IN or SUB IN with a mono RCA cable when a dedicated subwoofer output is available.

Route 2: use stereo PRE OUT L/R
Some integrated amplifiers provide left and right PRE OUT connectors but no socket labeled SUBWOOFER. These are line-level outputs and can feed the subwoofer directly if it accepts left and right RCA inputs.
- Turn off and unplug the amplifier and subwoofer.
- Connect the amplifier’s PRE OUT L to the subwoofer’s LINE IN L (or left input).
- Connect PRE OUT R to LINE IN R (or right input).
- Reconnect power, start playback at a low level and confirm that the main speakers still operate.
- Set the subwoofer’s low-pass frequency, gain and phase as described in the setup section below.
Rotel’s official guidance describes this exact method: its left and right PRE OUT connections feed the powered subwoofer’s line-level input with RCA cables. Keep the channels matched; connecting left to right will not necessarily damage equipment, but it makes level and stereo relationships harder to diagnose.
Route 3: connect speaker outputs to high-level inputs
Use this method when the amplifier has only speaker terminals or when the subwoofer is specifically designed to accept an amplified speaker-level signal. The SVS manual describes running two sets of speaker wires from the integrated amplifier to the main speakers and subwoofer when no line-level output is available. Klipsch also identifies high-level speaker-wire inputs as the option for receivers or preamps without a subwoofer RCA connection.

- Confirm compatibility. The subwoofer must have HIGH LEVEL IN or SPEAKER LEVEL IN. Do not connect speaker outputs to an RCA LINE IN.
- Switch off and unplug both units. Remove power before loosening or inserting speaker wires.
- Connect the left channel. Run the amplifier’s left positive terminal (L+) to the subwoofer’s left positive input, and the amplifier’s left negative terminal (L−) to the subwoofer’s left negative input.
- Connect the right channel. Run amplifier R+ to subwoofer R+ and amplifier R− to subwoofer R−.
- Keep the main speakers connected as the amplifier design permits. Some systems use a second set of speaker terminals; others require the subwoofer’s high-level inputs to share the same terminals through appropriate parallel wiring. Follow the amplifier and subwoofer manuals for the permitted arrangement.
- Inspect every connection. No loose strand should bridge positive and negative terminals. Verify that each channel and polarity is correct before powering up.
- Power up at low volume. Start with the subwoofer gain low, then raise it gradually until bass fills in rather than dominates.
With high-level input, the subwoofer receives the same volume changes as the main speaker outputs. That means the amplifier’s volume control continues to govern the entire system, even though no RCA pre-out is used.
How to set crossover, gain and phase
Choose a starting low-pass frequency
Set the subwoofer’s low-pass (crossover) control near the point where the main speakers naturally lose bass. If your speakers already produce substantial low frequencies, start lower; if they are compact speakers with limited bass, start higher. The control is a starting point, not a specification for every room. Make small changes while listening to familiar recordings.
Set gain for a blend, not maximum bass
Begin with the subwoofer gain or volume control at a low setting. Raise it until bass sounds complete and integrated with the main speakers. Excessive gain makes the subwoofer easy to locate and can obscure vocals or instruments; too little gain leaves the system thin. Recheck the setting at the listening volume you normally use because perceived bass changes with level.

Adjust phase for the strongest, smoothest transition
Use the subwoofer’s phase control while playing material with steady bass near the crossover region. Choose the setting that produces the most coherent, even bass at your listening position. Correct phase helps the subwoofer and main speakers reinforce each other instead of partially cancelling.
Keep polarity consistent on speaker-level wiring
For high-level connections, positive must go to positive and negative to negative on both channels. Reversed polarity can create weak, confused bass and a poor blend. If bass becomes noticeably fuller when you switch the subwoofer’s phase setting, recheck the speaker-wire polarity first.

Can the speakers and subwoofer run from the same amplifier?
Yes, when the connection method and equipment design support it. A powered subwoofer does not draw its bass power from the integrated amplifier; its internal amplifier powers the subwoofer driver. The integrated amplifier continues to drive the main speakers. With a dedicated SUBWOOFER PRE OUT or stereo PRE OUT, the subwoofer receives a line-level signal while the amplifier drives the speakers. With high-level inputs, the subwoofer senses the amplifier’s speaker output while the main speakers remain connected as allowed by the manuals.

Do not assume that every amplifier permits any parallel connection. Use only the speaker-terminal arrangement specified by the amplifier and subwoofer manufacturers. Never attach a passive subwoofer directly to PRE OUT, and never put speaker-level voltage into an RCA line input.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What cable do you need?
- Dedicated SUBWOOFER PRE OUT to a line input: A mono RCA subwoofer cable is the usual choice. Use the subwoofer’s L/mono input when its instructions specify one.
- Stereo PRE OUT L/R: A two-channel RCA cable, with left and right connected to their matching inputs.
- Speaker terminals to HIGH LEVEL IN: Speaker wire with enough length to reach both devices. Follow the terminal markings and secure bare wire or connectors so no strands touch adjacent terminals.
Cable type does not compensate for an incompatible input. The critical check is whether the amplifier output and subwoofer input are both line-level or both intended for speaker-level connection.
Troubleshooting a silent or poorly integrated subwoofer
No sound from the subwoofer
- Confirm that the subwoofer’s power switch is on and that its status indicator shows it is active.
- Verify that the RCA plug or speaker wire is fully inserted at both ends and connected to the intended output and input.
- Check the subwoofer gain and low-pass controls; an extremely low gain or an incorrectly set filter can make output appear absent.
- Make sure the amplifier is not muted and that its volume is high enough to produce a signal.
- Try a known-good RCA cable for a line-level connection, or inspect every speaker-wire termination for a break or short.
- For a dedicated output, confirm that the amplifier’s socket is actually SUBWOOFER PRE OUT rather than an unrelated connector.
These checks follow the fault list in Onkyo’s support guidance, which calls out connections, gain, low-pass settings, the subwoofer power switch, RCA cable, amplifier mute state and volume.
The subwoofer works but sounds boomy
- Lower the gain before changing other settings.
- Reduce the low-pass frequency if the subwoofer is reproducing too much of the same upper-bass range as the main speakers.
- Try a different phase setting and listen from the normal seating position.
- Confirm that the main speakers and subwoofer are not receiving reversed polarity on a high-level connection.
Bass is weak or disappears around the crossover
- Recheck L/R and positive/negative speaker-wire assignments.
- Adjust phase gradually; cancellation can make the crossover region sound hollow.
- Move the subwoofer or listening position if the effect changes dramatically around the room, then repeat the gain and crossover adjustments.
- If using stereo PRE OUT, verify both RCA channels and the subwoofer input selection.
The main speakers stopped working
Switch the system off and inspect the speaker connections. A loose strand or an incorrect shared-terminal arrangement can interrupt the amplifier’s speaker circuit. Restore the wiring exactly as shown in the amplifier and subwoofer manuals; do not keep testing a connection that may short the terminals.
Safety and compatibility checklist
- Use a powered subwoofer for PRE OUT or speaker-level connection.
- Power off and unplug equipment before changing any cable.
- Match SUBWOOFER PRE OUT or PRE OUT to RCA LINE IN/SUB IN.
- Match speaker terminals only to HIGH LEVEL/SPEAKER LEVEL IN.
- Preserve left/right channel identity and positive/negative polarity.
- Keep the main speakers connected only in the way the amplifier permits.
- Start with low subwoofer gain and moderate amplifier volume after wiring.
- Set crossover near the main speakers’ natural bass roll-off, then refine by ear.
- Use phase adjustment to achieve a coherent transition rather than simply maximizing bass.
Quick decision guide
- Do you see SUBWOOFER PRE OUT? Use one RCA cable to the powered subwoofer’s specified line input.
- Do you see PRE OUT L and R but no dedicated subwoofer output? Use two RCA cables from PRE OUT L/R to the subwoofer’s matching line inputs.
- Do you have only speaker terminals? Use a powered subwoofer with high-level inputs and four speaker-wire connections, preserving polarity and channel identity.
- Is the subwoofer passive? Add a suitable external amplifier; the line-level methods above do not power a passive subwoofer.
Once the correct signal path is selected, the remaining work is adjustment: set the low-pass point near the main speakers’ bass limit, blend gain conservatively, and use phase and polarity checks to make the transition sound continuous.
