To connect a Steam Machine to a VGA CRT monitor, use an active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter: Steam Machine DisplayPort out, active digital-to-analog converter, then the monitor’s 15-pin VGA input. The Steam Machine has no native VGA, composite, or component output. For a CRT television, use an HDMI-to-composite or HDMI-to-component downscaler that explicitly supports the television’s input standard and the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.
The adapter is the critical part. A passive plug only changes the connector shape; it does not convert the Steam Machine’s digital signal into the analog signal a VGA or older television expects.

First identify the CRT input
“CRT monitor” can mean two very different connection problems. A computer CRT with a 15-pin VGA socket needs an analog RGB signal. An older television may have only a single yellow composite RCA input or three red, green and blue component (YPbPr) inputs. Check the labels on the back before buying anything.
| CRT display input | Steam Machine source | Required conversion path | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15-pin VGA (DE-15) | DisplayPort 1.4, preferably | Active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, then a VGA cable | The adapter must convert digital DisplayPort to analog VGA and be designed for a DisplayPort source and VGA display. |
| Composite video (yellow RCA) | HDMI 2.0 | HDMI-to-composite downscaler | The scaler determines which low-resolution modes are available; verify the television’s video standard and supported modes. |
| Component video (YPbPr: red, green, blue) | HDMI 2.0 | HDMI-to-component downscaler | Component is not the same signal as VGA or composite. The converter must explicitly provide YPbPr output. |
Valve lists the Steam Machine’s display outputs as DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. There is no built-in VGA, composite, or component socket. Valve’s current Steam Machine guide identifies 1080p as the default game resolution, but a CRT and its converter may accept a much narrower range of resolutions and refresh rates.

Connecting a VGA CRT monitor
This is the most straightforward CRT setup because the Steam Machine’s DisplayPort output can be converted directly to the monitor’s VGA input.
What you need
- A Steam Machine with an available DisplayPort output.
- An active, unidirectional DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. The source side must be DisplayPort and the display side VGA.
- A VGA cable if the adapter does not have a captive cable.
- The CRT’s power cable and, if applicable, a separate audio connection for speakers or headphones.
For example, the StarTech DP2VGAHD20 datasheet describes a unidirectional DisplayPort-source-to-VGA-display adapter and states Linux compatibility. That is the type of specification to look for; do not infer compatibility from the plug shape alone.
Step-by-step setup
- Shut down both devices. Turn off the Steam Machine and the CRT before connecting the video path. This avoids troubleshooting a display that is still on the wrong input or has not renegotiated the signal.
- Connect DisplayPort from the Steam Machine to the active adapter. Insert the DisplayPort plug fully into the Steam Machine, then connect the adapter’s VGA plug or captive VGA lead to the CRT’s 15-pin VGA socket. Do not use a passive DisplayPort-to-VGA coupler.
- Provide adapter power if required. Some active converters draw enough power from DisplayPort; others include USB power or another auxiliary input. Follow the converter’s own wiring instructions and connect that power before diagnosing a missing picture.
- Turn on the CRT and select VGA. If the monitor has more than one input, choose its VGA or PC input. Confirm that the monitor is powered and not displaying an “input” or “no signal” message caused by a wrong source selection.
- Start the Steam Machine. Let the system detect the display. If the image appears unstable, disappears, or is outside the monitor’s range, move to a lower resolution or refresh rate rather than repeatedly reconnecting an unsupported mode.
- Choose a CRT-compatible mode in SteamOS. Open the SteamOS display settings and select a resolution and refresh rate that the CRT and the adapter document as supported. The default 1080p game setting is not a guarantee that a particular CRT path can display 1080p.
Why passive adapters fail
DisplayPort carries a digital signal, while VGA expects analog RGB video. A passive mechanical adapter can only work in hardware combinations that already provide the required analog output; the Steam Machine’s listed DisplayPort output does not provide native VGA. An active adapter contains the conversion electronics. Valve’s troubleshooting guidance also tells users to use an active adapter where the connection requires one.

Connecting a CRT television
A television with only composite or component inputs needs a different device. Do not connect a VGA adapter to a yellow RCA socket, and do not assume a component cable can be wired directly to HDMI. The television needs an HDMI-to-analog downscaler that outputs the exact format it accepts.
Composite television (yellow RCA)
- Read the television label and manual to confirm that the yellow connector is composite video and determine the television’s video standard and acceptable refresh behavior.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the Steam Machine’s HDMI output to an HDMI-to-composite downscaler designed for that input type.
- Connect the scaler’s yellow video output to the television’s yellow RCA input. Connect left and right audio outputs as directed by the scaler if you want sound through the television.
- Turn on the television, select its composite or AV input, then power on the Steam Machine.
- Use only a resolution and refresh mode listed by the scaler and suitable for the television. The scaler, rather than Steam Machine software alone, controls which low-resolution output modes are possible.
Component television (YPbPr)
- Confirm that the three video sockets are component Y/Pb/Pr, normally colored green, blue and red. These are not interchangeable with the red and white audio sockets.
- Choose an HDMI-to-component downscaler that explicitly names YPbPr output and documents the resolutions and refresh rates it accepts and produces.
- Connect Steam Machine HDMI to the scaler’s HDMI input, then connect the scaler’s Y, Pb and Pr outputs to the matching television inputs.
- Connect audio using the scaler’s documented output, select the television’s component input, and start the Steam Machine.
- Set SteamOS to a mode the converter and television both support. If the television remains blank, return to a lower documented mode before changing other settings.
Composite and component paths are not interchangeable. A converter designed for yellow RCA composite output may not provide YPbPr, and a component converter may not generate a signal a composite-only set can decode.
How to choose the right converter
Compare converters by the signal path, not by whether the package includes a familiar connector. These are the specifications that determine whether the setup will work:

| Specification | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Input connector | DisplayPort for a VGA path, or HDMI for a television path | The Steam Machine has DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 outputs; the converter must accept the connector you plan to use. |
| Output type | VGA, composite, or YPbPr component | Each CRT input expects a different electrical signal. |
| Active conversion | Explicit digital-to-analog conversion, not “passive” or “mechanical” only | Digital HDMI/DisplayPort cannot be treated as native analog VGA or television video. |
| Directionality | Source-to-display direction, such as DisplayPort source to VGA display | Many adapters are one-way. A VGA-to-DisplayPort device will not perform the reverse conversion. |
| Resolution and refresh support | A published list that includes the mode you intend to select | CRT compatibility varies by monitor, scaler and refresh rate; 1080p is only the Steam Machine default baseline. |
| Linux or SteamOS compatibility | Explicit operating-system support where available | The adapter must be recognized reliably by the SteamOS display stack; the DP2VGAHD20 datasheet, for example, states Linux compatibility. |
| Power | DisplayPort bus power, USB power, or an external supply | An unpowered active converter can appear to be a dead cable. |
| Audio handling | Whether audio passes through, is extracted, or requires a separate connection | VGA carries video only. Television scalers may expose separate analog audio outputs, but implementation differs by model. |
For a VGA monitor, prioritize an active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter with a clearly stated source-to-display direction and a supported-mode list. For a television, prioritize the television input type and the scaler’s documented output modes before considering cable length or extra features.

A CRT does not automatically accept every mode the Steam Machine can render. The monitor’s horizontal and vertical scan limits, the active adapter’s capabilities, and SteamOS’s available display modes all have to overlap. A converter can also rescale a digital input to a fixed analog output rather than exposing every mode the game requests.
Start with a documented mode
Use the display settings to select a mode explicitly listed by the CRT manual, adapter documentation, or scaler documentation. If the converter lists several modes, begin with a conservative lower resolution and standard refresh rate, confirm a stable image, and then test higher modes one at a time. Do not keep an out-of-range mode active while waiting for the CRT to recover.

Understand the 1080p baseline
Valve identifies 1080p as the Steam Machine’s default game resolution for its verified testing baseline. That statement describes the default software target, not a promise that every analog converter or CRT can display 1080p. A VGA CRT may accept a different range, while a composite television path normally requires the scaler to reduce the signal to television-compatible output.
Expect model-specific behavior
Two CRTs with the same connector can have different scan ranges. Likewise, two apparently similar converters can expose different timing options. Record the exact mode that produces a stable picture so you can restore it after changing games, docks or display settings.

The VGA video connection does not carry audio. Plan a separate audio route, such as the Steam Machine’s available audio output, speakers connected to the system, or an adapter that explicitly extracts audio. Do not assume that a VGA adapter will deliver sound because the Steam Machine is connected through DisplayPort.

HDMI-to-composite and HDMI-to-component scalers vary: some provide analog left/right audio, some pass audio elsewhere, and some have restrictions tied to the selected video mode. Verify the particular converter’s audio specification before using the television as the only sound output.
Troubleshooting a blank or unstable picture
Work from the display outward. Remove variables before changing several settings at once.
- Check power and input selection. Confirm the CRT is on, the brightness is not fully reduced, and the selected input matches the connected socket: VGA, AV/composite, or component.
- Reseat every connection. Unplug and firmly reconnect the DisplayPort or HDMI plug at the Steam Machine, the adapter, the VGA or analog cable, and any required USB power lead. Test another cable when one is available.
- Remove intermediate equipment. Disconnect docks, AV receivers, HDMI switches, soundbars and capture devices. Steam Support recommends connecting the Machine directly to the display path while troubleshooting.
- Confirm active conversion. Replace any passive DisplayPort-to-VGA or HDMI-to-VGA plug with an active converter designed for the correct source direction.
- Try a supported lower mode. If SteamOS offers no picture, select a lower resolution and refresh rate that the adapter and CRT documentation both list. An out-of-range timing can produce a blank screen even when the wiring is correct.
- Test the converter separately. Where possible, test the active adapter with another compatible display or test the Steam Machine with a known-working digital display. This separates a failed converter from a CRT input or SteamOS mode problem.
- Check the analog standard. For a television, make sure the converter output matches the socket: composite for yellow RCA, YPbPr for component. Selecting the wrong television input or using the wrong converter type will not be fixed by changing SteamOS resolution.
Steam Support cautions that display compatibility varies across peripherals. If a direct connection, active adapter and documented display mode still fail, the converter and CRT may simply have no compatible timing combination.
A practical decision checklist
- VGA computer monitor: Steam Machine DisplayPort → active DP-to-VGA adapter → VGA cable → CRT.
- Composite television: Steam Machine HDMI → HDMI-to-composite downscaler → yellow RCA input.
- Component television: Steam Machine HDMI → HDMI-to-YPbPr downscaler → Y/Pb/Pr inputs.
- Confirm the converter’s direction, active status, power requirement, Linux or SteamOS compatibility, and supported resolution and refresh rates.
- Set SteamOS to a mode the complete chain supports; do not assume the default 1080p setting will work on an analog CRT path.
- Keep audio separate for VGA, and verify how a television scaler handles audio.
The reliable rule is simple: match the converter to the CRT’s actual input, use active digital-to-analog hardware, and begin with a documented display mode. Once the direct signal path is stable, add switches, receivers or other peripherals one at a time.
