Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your TV has no built-in Wi-Fi, check for a LAN/Ethernet port first. If it has one, connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable and select a wired connection in the TV’s network settings. If it has no network port, use an HDMI streaming player connected to the internet. A USB Wi-Fi adapter is an option only when the TV maker confirms compatibility with your exact model.
Choose a connection that your TV supports
| Option | When it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet cable from router to TV | The TV has a LAN/Ethernet port and the cable can reach the router. | Confirm the port is present, then select Wired or Ethernet in the TV’s network settings. Samsung’s network guide and TCL’s instructions describe wired setup. |
| HDMI streaming player | The TV has an available HDMI input but no usable internet connection of its own. | The player connects to the internet and supplies its own apps. Check whether it uses Wi-Fi, has Ethernet, or needs a compatible adapter. Google’s Chromecast setup requirements and Apple TV connection instructions cover HDMI and wired options. |
| Ethernet adapter for a streaming player | The player supports wired networking but lacks a built-in Ethernet jack. | Confirm the adapter is compatible with that exact player. Google documents an Ethernet adapter for covered Chromecast devices; Roku notes that USB Ethernet adapter support varies. |
| TV USB Wi-Fi adapter | Only when the TV maker lists a compatible adapter for the exact model. | A USB port alone does not mean the TV supports a network dongle. Check the model’s manual or manufacturer support page. LG’s guidance describes model-specific adapters; a Hisense manual for one model says external USB network adapters are not supported. |
Check the TV’s ports and model
Look on the back and sides of the TV for a LAN or Ethernet jack. Check the exact model number in the owner’s manual or on the manufacturer’s support site; port availability and supported accessories vary by model. If you plan to use a streaming player, make sure there is a free HDMI input. Do not treat a USB port as proof that a Wi-Fi adapter will work.

Connect the TV directly with Ethernet
- Run an Ethernet cable from the TV’s LAN port to a working router with internet access.
- Open the TV’s network settings and choose the wired connection option if prompted. Samsung’s guide gives the path Settings > General > Network. TCL’s supported models use Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wired (Ethernet). Menus differ by model.
- Open a streaming app on the TV to check that it can reach the internet.
Use an HDMI streaming player when the TV has no network port
- Connect the streaming player to an available HDMI input.
- Power it and follow its on-screen setup. Join your home Wi-Fi from the player if it supports Wi-Fi, or connect it to the router with Ethernet if it has a supported Ethernet port or adapter.
- Select the TV input that matches the HDMI port you used. Open an app on the player to confirm the connection.
The player supplies its own apps and network connection; it does not add Wi-Fi to the TV’s built-in smart platform. You will use the player’s remote and interface. Some players connect to Ethernet directly, while others require an adapter designed for that model. Google’s documented Chromecast wired arrangement uses HDMI to the display and an adapter for power and Ethernet. Apple says Apple TV models with an Ethernet port can connect directly to a router.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOnly buy a USB Wi-Fi dongle listed for your TV
Search the TV maker’s support site using the full model number and terms such as “Wi-Fi adapter” or “wireless LAN adapter.” Buy a dongle only if the manufacturer lists it for that model. Compatibility is not universal: LG describes its AN-WF adapters as model-specific, and the cited Hisense manual says one TV model does not support an external USB network adapter.

Troubleshoot a failed connection
- TV connected by Ethernet: Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends and reaches a working router. Confirm that the TV’s network setting is Wired or Ethernet.
- Streaming player connected by Wi-Fi: Check the network and connection status in the player’s settings, then use that device maker’s support instructions if needed.
- Streaming player connected by Ethernet: Check the cable and router connection, and verify that any adapter is compatible with the exact player model.
- USB adapter not detected: Check the TV maker’s documentation for the exact model rather than trying an unverified generic adapter.
A phone hotspot or travel router may depend on the TV or player, the service plan, and the network setup; the cited manufacturer instructions do not establish one method that works across devices.
