First confirm your exact Samsung washer model supports Wi-Fi and SmartThings: the Samsung name—or a Smart Care button—does not guarantee connected features. On a compatible washer, use the SmartThings app to add the appliance and follow its prompts to join your home network. Samsung’s washer connection guidance specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
Check whether your washer supports SmartThings
Compatibility depends on the exact model. Check the washer’s user manual or Samsung support page for Wi-Fi or SmartThings instructions. A Smart Control or Smart Monitor control, or a Wi-Fi indicator, can be a clue, but check the model documentation rather than relying on a control label alone. Samsung explains the distinction in its Smart Care guidance.

Smart Care is a diagnostic feature for reading error codes with a phone; it does not connect the washer to Wi-Fi or add it to SmartThings. If your model lacks Wi-Fi/SmartThings support, app pairing will not make it a connected washer.

- A washer model that supports SmartThings connectivity.
- A phone or tablet with the SmartThings app installed and updated.
- A Samsung account, plus access to your home wireless network.
- The washer powered on and, for Samsung’s documented washer connection workflow, plugged in.
Samsung lists a Samsung account, wireless network, and SmartThings app among the requirements for connected functions. See its SmartThings setup overview and washer Wi-Fi instructions.

Add the washer in the SmartThings app
- Open SmartThings and sign in to your Samsung account. If you do not have one, create an account and sign in.
- Open the app’s device-adding flow, usually through Devices and Add. Labels and locations can vary by app and software version.
- Choose the setup route available to you: scan the washer’s product QR code, search for or select the washer by model/device type, or use nearby-device discovery if the app offers it. These are different ways to begin setup, not alternatives to model compatibility.
- Follow the prompts to choose a location or room and connect the washer to your home Wi-Fi. Enter the network password when asked, then wait for the app to complete registration.
Samsung’s SmartThings connection troubleshooting page and home-appliance setup guidance describe variations in device discovery and setup. Follow the instructions shown for your washer rather than expecting every app version to present identical screens.
Choose the right Wi-Fi network
Samsung’s washer-specific connection and update guidance calls for a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, check the washer manual or router settings for how to connect a device to the 2.4 GHz band.
Samsung also recommends improving signal strength—such as moving the router closer—if the washer cannot connect. Its note that the Wi-Fi network name should contain only letters and numbers applies to the particular update workflow documented on its washer connection page; do not assume that is a universal SmartThings rule for every model and setup.

- Confirm compatibility again. Verify Wi-Fi/SmartThings support for the exact model in its manual or Samsung support page. Smart Care alone is not proof of Wi-Fi capability.
- Update SmartThings. Install any available app update, then retry the add-device flow.
- Check the Wi-Fi details. Re-enter the password carefully and confirm that you are using the correct home network and the 2.4 GHz band specified by Samsung’s washer guidance.
- Check the signal where the washer sits. Try setup near the router if practical. If signal is weak, reposition the router or consider a signal extender.
- Reduce temporary network or device problems. If many devices are using the network, reduce the load where possible. When appropriate, power-cycle the router and washer, then retry pairing.
- Check registration status. If SmartThings reports that the washer is already registered, use the ownership-transfer or household invitation route that matches who set it up. Samsung describes these cases in its previously registered device troubleshooting.
For model-specific network requirements, consult the washer manual. Samsung’s appliance troubleshooting guidance also covers password and signal checks, power cycling, and reporting a problem from the app. If the washer detects networks but SmartThings registration still fails, use the app’s reporting or diagnostic option where available. If the washer’s network function itself appears faulty or the problem persists after these checks, contact Samsung or your router provider as appropriate. Samsung provides repair scheduling and a service locator through its washer support information.
What SmartThings can do after pairing
On compatible models, Samsung describes features such as checking washer status, scheduling or starting cycles, receiving cycle-finished alerts, and getting status or troubleshooting notifications. Feature availability depends on the washer model and settings; connected features also require the wireless network, Samsung account, and SmartThings app. Samsung’s connected-device overview and washing-machine monitoring instructions explain the supported functions and setup.
