For repetitive jobs such as classification, extraction, translation, and short summaries, start by testing Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and GPT-6 Luna against your actual workflow. Their published API rates have different input/output and context-tier pricing, so the lowest headline rate is not automatically the cheapest way to complete a task. There is no universal winner established for routine automation; compare accuracy, full-run cost, and reliability on representative examples before choosing.
What counts as routine automation?
Routine automation means a bounded, repeatable task with a result you can check: for example, assigning a category to a support message, extracting fields from a document, translating a standard notice, or summarizing a short report. A simple tool-mediated workflow may also fit when the model’s permitted actions and success conditions are tightly defined.

That is different from complex reasoning or a safety-critical decision. If an error could materially affect a person, finances, legal rights, or system security, keep appropriate human review and safeguards in the workflow rather than treating a low token price as a reason to automate without oversight.

Which low-cost models belong on the shortlist?
Two current candidates have particularly low published rates in at least one pricing category: Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna. Their rates are not directly comparable without accounting for context tier and the workload’s input/output mix.
#1 Best Overall
- A USB accessory that brings machine learning inferencing to existing systems. Works with Raspberry Pi and other Linux systems
- Performs high-speed ML inferencing: the on-board edge TPU Coprocessor is capable of performing 4 trillion operations (tera-operations) per second (tops), using 0.5 watts for each tops (2 tops per watt). For example, it can execute state-of-the-art mobile vision models such as mobilenet V2 AT 400 FPS, in a power efficient manner
- Works with Debian Linux: connects to any debian-based Linux system with an included USB 3.0 Type-C cable
- Supports tensorflow Lite: no need to build models from the ground up. Tensorflow Lite models can be compiled to run on the edge TPE
- Supports automl vision edge: easily build and deploy fast, high-accuracy custom image classification models to your device with automl vision edge
| Model | Published API rates | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite | $0.30 per million input tokens; $2.50 per million output tokens | Google describes it as optimized for high-volume agentic tasks, translation, and simple data processing. Rates are from Google’s pricing page accessed October 3, 2026. Google AI for Developers pricing. |
| GPT-6 Luna | Short context: $0.05 per million input tokens and $0.25 per million output tokens. Long context: $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.375 per million output tokens. | OpenAI’s pricing page lists separate short- and long-context rates; these prices were accessed October 3, 2026. The rates alone do not establish task quality or total workflow cost. OpenAI API pricing. |
These published figures are token rates, not a quote for a completed automation. Actual cost depends on how many input and output tokens a run uses and whether it needs extra model calls, tools, retries, or human correction. Check the providers’ live pricing pages before budgeting, since model catalogs and prices can change.
Why a single “best” ranking would mislead
There is no universal routine-work ranking established by the cited material. Google DeepMind’s comparison reports results for coding-agent benchmarks, not everyday extraction, translation, or classification. Its July 2026 table gives the following prices and scores for selected models:
Rank #2
- High-Performance AI Processing: The MX3 is designed to handle the most demanding AI computer vision workloads, delivering exceptional performance and efficiency.
- Flexible Integration: The MX3 can be easily integrated into your existing systems via its M.2 M-key form factor and support for Linux operating systems.
- Energy Efficient: The MX3 is designed to provide high performance while minimizing power consumption.
- Comprehensive Software Development Kit (SDK): The MX3 is supported by a comprehensive SDK that simplifies development and deployment.
- Hardware compatability: The MX3 is compatible with the PCI-SIG M.2 M-key 2280 Specification. It can be used with the Raspberry Pi 5 with a M-key 2280 HAT.
| Model | Input price per million tokens | Output price per million tokens | SWE-Bench Pro | Terminal-bench 2.1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite | $0.30 | $2.50 | 54.2% | 54.0% |
| Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite | $0.25 | $1.50 | 38.3% | 31.0% |
| GPT-5.4 mini | $0.75 | $4.50 | 54.4% | 59.2% |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1.00 | $5.00 | 39.5% | 44.2% |
The figures are Google DeepMind’s selected coding-agent comparison, with results noted as of July 2026; they should not be read as a ranking for routine business automation. Google DeepMind model card.

How to compare models on your workflow
Run a small, controlled evaluation before selecting a model for recurring use. The following is a practical comparison method, not a reported test of these models.
Rank #3
- Define an acceptance rule. Decide what counts as correct for the task, such as exact field matches, an allowed category, or a summary that preserves required facts.
- Prepare representative examples. Use real cases that reflect normal inputs as well as awkward or borderline ones. Have a person check the expected answers.
- Keep the test consistent. Give each model the same instructions, examples, tools, and output requirements. Include structured-output or function-calling needs if the production workflow depends on them.
- Measure quality and usage. Record correctness, input and output token usage, and cached or reasoning-token usage when reported. Apply the current price for the relevant context tier and token category.
- Calculate cost per successful completion. Include failed attempts, retries, tool calls, and human review or correction—not just the first model response.
- Repeat runs and compare operations. Check latency and consistency across repeated runs, as well as context limits, supported modalities, and integration requirements.
- Pilot with oversight. Start with a limited deployment and review outputs before expanding, especially when mistakes have material consequences.
When to choose each candidate
Consider Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite for high-volume, bounded work
Google explicitly positions Flash-Lite for high-volume agentic tasks, translation, and simple data processing. That makes it a natural candidate to test for repetitive jobs in those categories. Its published output-token rate is higher than its input rate, so measure workflows that produce lengthy responses rather than assuming a low input rate determines the bill.
Consider GPT-6 Luna when its context-tier pricing fits
OpenAI lists different rates for short and long context, with the long-context rates higher. Identify which tier applies to your expected requests and evaluate the model on the actual prompt length and output format you need; a short-context rate should not be used to budget long-context requests.
Rank #4
Keep alternatives tied to evidence from your task
Google’s comparison includes Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite, GPT-5.4 mini, and Claude Haiku 4.5, but the reported scores are specific to coding-agent benchmarks. Treat them as context for those benchmarks, not proof that one alternative will perform better or worse on your routine workflow. Use the same task-specific evaluation for any model you consider.
