How to Connect a Mini Xbox Controller to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or PC

Use the controller’s own wireless method or a USB cable; “mini” does not identify one universal connection standard. The official Xbox Nano Controller supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android and iOS. On a console, pair it with the console’s Pair button and the controller’s Pair/Sync button. On a Windows PC, use Bluetooth, a compatible Xbox Wireless or 2.4 GHz receiver, or a matching USB cable. Xbox lists a USB-C cable as required for the Nano Controller and says the cable is sold separately.

Third-party small controllers may use Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, or a proprietary 2.4 GHz receiver, and their buttons, ports and pairing sequence can differ. Identify the exact model and connection method before following the steps below.

Which connection method should you use?

The fastest reliable choice depends on where you are playing and what radio or port the controller actually has. A console pairing procedure is not interchangeable with a PC Bluetooth procedure, and a 2.4 GHz receiver is not the same thing as Bluetooth.

Method Xbox Series X|S / Xbox One Windows PC Extra hardware Protocol or connector Audio behavior
Console wireless pairing Yes, when the controller is Xbox-compatible and designed for that console Not applicable Usually none for Xbox Wireless; a receiver is required for receiver-based models Xbox Wireless or the controller’s specified wireless system Not established for every mini controller; check its manual and headset support
PC Bluetooth No console Bluetooth pairing procedure Yes, if the PC has Bluetooth and the controller supports Bluetooth None when Bluetooth is built in; otherwise a compatible Bluetooth adapter Bluetooth Input support is the safe assumption; audio support depends on the controller and game system
PC Xbox Wireless or 2.4 GHz receiver Only when the receiver or controller is specified for the console or the exact device Yes, with the matching adapter USB receiver Xbox Wireless or proprietary 2.4 GHz Do not assume headset audio; verify the model’s documentation
USB cable Usually works for a compatible wired controller Yes, with the correct data-capable cable and driver support Matching cable USB-C or micro-USB, depending on revision Input is supported; audio depends on the controller, console and cable implementation

If you are using the Xbox Nano Controller, Xbox specifies USB-C and describes the cable as sold separately. A cable that only charges a device may not provide a wired data connection, so use a cable intended for data as well as power.

Before you start: identify the mini controller

Look at the controller, its box and its manual for three details:

  • Compatibility label: confirm that Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows or PC is listed. A controller made only for Android, iOS or generic Bluetooth may not work with an Xbox console.
  • Wireless type: look for Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz receiver terminology. A controller that ships with a USB receiver usually needs that receiver; it may not pair through the PC’s built-in Bluetooth.
  • Port and cable: check whether the socket is USB-C or micro-USB. The connector must fit, and the cable must support data if you want wired play.

Charge the controller or install fresh batteries before pairing. Turn off nearby controllers that might be selected accidentally, and keep the mini controller close to the console or PC during the first connection.

Connect to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One wirelessly

This procedure applies to an Xbox-compatible controller that uses the console’s normal wireless pairing process. The Xbox button should illuminate when the controller is on.

  1. Turn on the Xbox console.
  2. Turn on the mini controller by pressing its Xbox button.
  3. Press the console’s Pair or Sync button. Its location differs between Xbox console models, so use the console diagram or the model’s support documentation if you cannot find it.
  4. On the controller, press and hold the Pair or Sync button, normally located on the top edge, until the Xbox light begins flashing rapidly.
  5. Wait without pressing either button. When the light becomes steady, the controller has paired.

Open a game and test both sticks, triggers and the menu button. If you need to connect a second controller, repeat the same process; do not assume that a controller paired to another console will move automatically.

If the controller uses a 2.4 GHz receiver instead

Some small Xbox-compatible controllers do not use Xbox Wireless. They communicate through a dedicated USB receiver, and the receiver must be present before synchronization.

  1. Insert the supplied adapter into the console.
  2. Hold the controller’s SYNC button for three seconds.
  3. Press the pairing button on the adapter.
  4. Wait until both the controller and adapter LEDs are solid white.

This four-step sequence is specific to that documented receiver system, not a universal rule for every mini controller. Follow the exact manual supplied with your model when its button names or timing differ. A receiver from one manufacturer should not be assumed to work with another controller.

Connect a mini Xbox controller to a Windows PC with Bluetooth

Bluetooth is convenient because it does not require a USB receiver, but both the computer and controller must support the relevant Bluetooth mode. Microsoft’s Windows sequence uses the current Settings labels below.

  1. Turn on the controller.
  2. Press and hold its Pair button for three seconds. Release it when the Xbox button starts flashing.
  3. On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Turn Bluetooth on.
  5. Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the controller when it appears.
  6. Keep the controller close to the PC until Windows confirms the connection and the Xbox light stops flashing.

Launch a game only after Windows shows the controller as connected. If it appears under a generic name, select the newly added device rather than an old, disconnected entry for the same controller.

Bluetooth requirements and limits

  • The PC must have Bluetooth hardware, either built in or supplied by a compatible adapter.
  • The controller must support Bluetooth; an Xbox Wireless-only controller will not become a Bluetooth device merely because the PC has Bluetooth.
  • Bluetooth pairing handles controller input. Headset and chat audio support varies by controller and platform, so verify those features in the model’s manual instead of assuming they work over Bluetooth.

Connect through an Xbox Wireless or 2.4 GHz USB adapter

Use this route when the controller is designed for a matching receiver, when the PC lacks Bluetooth, or when the controller’s manual specifies Xbox Wireless for PC.

  1. Plug the compatible Xbox Wireless or 2.4 GHz USB adapter into the PC.
  2. Turn on the controller.
  3. Hold the controller’s Pair or Sync button until its light flashes rapidly.
  4. Press the pairing button on the adapter.
  5. Wait for the controller light to remain steady.

The exact button order, duration and LED pattern vary by adapter manufacturer. If the adapter has its own driver or setup instructions, complete those first. Do not plug in a receiver and then select Bluetooth in Windows unless the receiver specifically presents itself as a Bluetooth adapter.

Receiver pairing on an Xbox console

A receiver-based controller can work on a console only when the receiver and controller are explicitly intended for that console. Insert the receiver before starting synchronization and use the manufacturer’s documented sequence. If the controller’s packaging lists only Windows PC, it should not be treated as an Xbox console controller.

Use a USB cable for wired play

Wired connection is the quickest diagnostic test because it bypasses wireless pairing. It also lets you play when a battery is empty, provided the controller can operate over USB.

  1. Choose the connector specified for the controller: USB-C for the Xbox Nano Controller, or micro-USB on some other revisions.
  2. Connect the cable to the controller and a USB port on the Xbox console or Windows PC.
  3. Turn on the controller if it does not start automatically.
  4. Wait for the console or Windows to recognize it, then test the controls in the dashboard or a game.

Xbox lists the Nano Controller’s USB-C cable as sold separately. Use a cable that carries data, not only charging power. If the controller charges but never appears as an input device, replace the cable and try another USB port.

USB input support does not establish that every model carries headset audio through the same cable. Check the controller’s documentation for chat, headset and microphone behavior.

How to choose between Bluetooth, a receiver and USB

Your situation Best first attempt Why
Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One and the controller is labeled Xbox-compatible Console Pair/Sync procedure It uses the console’s intended controller connection without a PC adapter.
Windows laptop or desktop with Bluetooth and a Bluetooth-capable controller Windows Bluetooth pairing No cable or receiver is needed.
Windows PC without Bluetooth, or a controller supplied with a receiver Matching Xbox Wireless or 2.4 GHz adapter The receiver supplies the radio link the controller expects.
Pairing fails, battery is low, or you need to isolate a wireless fault USB cable It bypasses radio pairing and provides a direct test of the controller and game.

There is no single “mini controller” standard. Two controllers with similar dimensions can have different radios, connector types and console support. Treat the model manual as the authority when it conflicts with a general procedure.

Troubleshooting connection failures

The controller will not turn on

  • Recharge it or replace its batteries.
  • Hold the Xbox button long enough for the status light to appear.
  • Check that the battery compartment and cable connector are seated correctly.
  • Try a USB connection. If it works by cable but not wirelessly, continue with wireless troubleshooting rather than replacing the controller immediately.

The Xbox does not find the controller

  1. Restart the pairing attempt: turn off the controller, press the console Pair button, then hold the controller Pair button until the light flashes rapidly.
  2. Move the controller close to the console and remove unnecessary wireless obstructions.
  3. Confirm that the controller packaging lists Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. PC-only Bluetooth models are not automatically console-compatible.
  4. If a receiver is required, insert that receiver and use its own synchronization process instead of the console’s ordinary Xbox Wireless sequence.

Windows Bluetooth cannot see the controller

  • Confirm the PC supports Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is turned on under Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  • Put the controller back into pairing mode by holding Pair for three seconds until the Xbox light flashes.
  • In Windows, remove the old controller entry, then choose Add device > Bluetooth again.
  • Keep the controller close to the PC and temporarily move other Bluetooth devices away while pairing.
  • Check the manual for a mode switch. Some controllers use different modes for Xbox, Bluetooth and receiver operation.

The USB receiver does not pair

  • Unplug and reconnect the receiver directly to the PC or console, avoiding an unpowered hub during testing.
  • Confirm that the receiver belongs to the controller and supports the target platform.
  • Repeat the manufacturer’s sequence, including any required three-second hold or adapter-button press.
  • Look for matching solid LEDs on both devices when the manual uses LED status as confirmation.

The controller works in Windows but not in a game

  • Test it in Windows before opening the game so you know whether the fault is at the operating-system or game level.
  • Close other controller-mapping software that could capture the input.
  • Reconnect the controller by USB to separate a game configuration issue from a wireless issue.
  • Check the game’s own controller settings and confirm that the game supports the controller mode you selected.

Buttons work but headset audio does not

Input and audio are separate compatibility questions. Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, 2.4 GHz and USB may not expose the same headset features, and the available behavior depends on the specific mini controller and host device. Consult that controller’s manual for headset and microphone support; do not infer it from successful button pairing.

Keep the connection reliable

  • Use one pairing method at a time while diagnosing a problem. Switching repeatedly between Bluetooth and a receiver can leave an old Windows entry or an unpaired mode active.
  • Keep the controller charged before firmware or mode changes.
  • Check the exact manual for firmware updates, mode switches and connector requirements. Third-party models are not interchangeable merely because they fit the same hands or use Xbox-style buttons.
  • Save the receiver with the controller if the model requires a proprietary adapter; the controller may not pair with a replacement receiver.

What the Xbox Nano Controller supports

Xbox describes the Nano Controller as an entry-level, rechargeable controller in a smaller form factor. Its stated compatibility list includes Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android and iOS. Xbox also specifies the USB-C connector and notes that the cable is sold separately. Those specifications identify where the controller is intended to work; they do not mean every other mini controller shares the same compatibility or wireless behavior.
