To use Cloudflare’s standard full DNS setup with a domain, add the domain to Cloudflare, check that its website and email DNS records are present, disable DNSSEC if it is active, then replace the domain’s nameservers at the registrar with the exact pair Cloudflare assigns. After Cloudflare activates the domain, manage its DNS records in Cloudflare. Nameserver updates can take up to 24 hours.
Before changing nameservers: check the DNS records Cloudflare needs
Adding a domain to Cloudflare does not guarantee that every existing DNS record has been copied correctly. Review the imported zone before switching nameservers: when delegation changes, Cloudflare becomes the authoritative DNS provider, so missing records can take a website or email offline.

Website records
Check that the zone contains the records needed for the apex domain, such as example.com, and for www or any other subdomains your site uses. The correct A, AAAA, or CNAME values depend on your hosting configuration; use the values for your own site rather than a generic example. Cloudflare warns that an incomplete DNS setup can cause visitors to see DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN (Cloudflare’s full-setup guide, updated July 29, 2026).
Email records
If you use email on the domain, preserve your provider’s MX and TXT records, including any required SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. The correct values come from your email provider and account; do not substitute example values. Configure mail records according to that provider’s directions rather than treating them as ordinary proxied website records.

How to point a domain to Cloudflare
- Add the domain in Cloudflare. Enter the registered domain, such as
example.com, and choose a plan. For the standard full setup, Cloudflare assigns two authoritative nameservers. Copy the exact pair assigned to this domain; nameservers from another domain or an example will not work. - Review the imported DNS zone. Confirm the website records and any subdomain records you need, then add missing entries. Check email records as described above before proceeding.
- Turn off DNSSEC at your registrar if it is active. Check the registrar’s domain settings for DNSSEC controls. Availability can vary by top-level domain. Cloudflare cautions that changing nameservers while DNSSEC is active can make the domain unreachable (Cloudflare DNSSEC guidance).
- Replace the nameservers at your registrar. Open the domain’s nameserver settings, select the custom nameserver option, enter Cloudflare’s assigned pair, and save. If the domain is registered elsewhere, make this change with the registrar that controls it.
- Wait for delegation and check Cloudflare. Cloudflare says nameserver updates can take up to 24 hours; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed finish time. In Cloudflare, look for Active status and verify that the authoritative nameservers match the assigned pair exactly.
- Set up DNSSEC again after activation. Once Cloudflare is active, configure DNSSEC through Cloudflare and make any registrar-side update Cloudflare requires. Do not leave an old DS record in place when troubleshooting a failed switch.
How to verify the nameserver change
Check that public DNS returns Cloudflare’s assigned nameservers. On macOS or Linux, Cloudflare documents these checks:
dig ns <DOMAIN_NAME> @1.1.1.1dig ns <DOMAIN_NAME> @8.8.8.8dig <DOMAIN_NAME> +trace
On Windows, use:
nslookup -type=ns <DOMAIN_NAME> 1.1.1.1

What to check if the site or email stops working
Cloudflare is still pending or the domain does not resolve
- Confirm the registrar’s nameservers exactly match Cloudflare’s assigned pair, with no extra old nameservers.
- Check whether a pre-existing DS record remains after DNSSEC was disabled.
- Allow up to 24 hours for updates, recognizing that registrar processing and DNS caching affect timing.
- If the domain was bought through a reseller or registered elsewhere, verify the nameserver change with the provider that controls its delegation.
The website works but email does not
Check the Cloudflare zone for the email provider’s MX and TXT records and compare them with that provider’s current requirements. Correct or restore any missing or inaccurate entries; the values are specific to the email service and account.

Where to make DNS changes after setup
Once the nameserver switch is complete, Cloudflare is authoritative for the domain’s DNS. Make subsequent DNS edits in the Cloudflare zone, not in the registrar’s DNS zone. The nameserver change transfers DNS-zone management to the new provider; it does not change which company registered the domain or hosts the website.
