When a blockchain node and its trading bots run on the same machine, the direct option for avoiding TCP and HTTP on their RPC connection is the node’s local IPC interface—provided the client and each bot support it. With Geth, bots can send JSON-RPC requests through a Unix domain socket on Linux or macOS, or a named pipe on Windows. This avoids TCP/HTTP on the bot-to-node hop; it does not remove the node’s separate network connections to blockchain peers.
How the local IPC setup works
JSON-RPC describes how an application asks a node for data or requests an action; it is not tied to one transport. Ethereum’s JSON-RPC documentation describes the API as transport-agnostic. The node client determines which transports it actually exposes.

For Geth, IPC carries JSON-RPC locally: a Unix domain socket on Linux and macOS, or a named pipe on Windows. Geth says its IPC server is enabled by default, can be configured with --ipcpath, and can be disabled with --ipcdisable. Its IPC endpoint has access to all JSON-RPC namespaces, so enable only the APIs your applications need where the client configuration permits that choice. See Geth’s JSON-RPC Server documentation for current client details.
Basic architecture
- Run one blockchain node process on the host that will run the bots.
- Keep the node’s IPC endpoint enabled and identify its socket or pipe using that client’s configuration.
- Configure each bot to connect to that endpoint using a JSON-RPC library that supports the client’s IPC transport.
- Restrict access to the IPC socket or pipe to the intended local processes, using the host’s filesystem permissions and process isolation.
The architecture shares a node endpoint, but it does not guarantee that every bot library supports IPC or that all clients handle multiple simultaneous connections identically. Confirm both points in the documentation for your node client and bot software before deploying.

What IPC removes—and what it does not
With bots and node on the same host, IPC removes HTTP and TCP from the local RPC path between them. It does not eliminate JSON-RPC processing, serialization, operating-system scheduling, or node work. Nor does it bypass the node’s peer-to-peer connections used to communicate with the blockchain network. Ethereum.org lists IPC or a node plugin as a low-latency option for applications that process substantial data or need to replace transactions quickly, but that is guidance about the transport choice, not a guaranteed speedup for a particular setup. See Nodes and clients.
Geth describes IPC as having low per-message metadata overhead compared with HTTP, but its published comparison is qualitative—not a benchmark for multiple bots or a promise of lower end-to-end latency. Actual results depend on the node, host, workload, and client libraries.

Choosing between IPC, WebSocket, and HTTP
Geth’s qualitative transport comparison is useful when deciding whether the no-TCP constraint is essential. It does not provide a measured throughput or latency result for a specific workload.

| Transport | Where it fits | Subscriptions | Geth’s overhead guidance | Meets a strict no-TCP/HTTP goal? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPC | Local node and applications | Yes | Low per-message metadata overhead | Yes, for the local RPC hop |
| WebSocket | Local or network-connected applications | Yes; supports bidirectional event delivery | Low per-message overhead after the handshake | No; it is a network transport |
| HTTP | Local or network-connected applications | No in Geth’s comparison | High per-message metadata overhead; Geth notes it may have lower overall overhead at low request volume because connections close between requests | No |
If the bots need event subscriptions and share the node’s host, Geth supports them over IPC. If they run on different machines, WebSocket or HTTP may be more practical, but either choice means accepting a network transport rather than meeting a strict no-TCP requirement. Geth notes that persistent WebSocket connections suit event streaming and high request volumes.

Geth documents IPC as a local transport; it is not a way to connect remote bots directly to a node. If avoiding TCP/HTTP is a hard requirement, the straightforward design is to colocate the bots with the node and use IPC. Otherwise, use a remote-capable RPC transport and protect it with deliberate network controls.
Do not expose an RPC endpoint broadly by default. Geth warns that HTTP or WebSocket RPC exposure can create account-control risks in configurations that allow account unlocking. Besu likewise warns that binding its API to 0.0.0.0 makes it remotely reachable and calls for firewall protection. Check the exact API and security options for the client you run; see Besu’s API access documentation.

Check client and bot compatibility before switching
- Node client: Confirm it supports IPC and how its endpoint is enabled, located, and secured. Ethereum clients do not all expose identical transports or configuration options. Besu, for example, documents IPC support, but its options still need to be checked for the specific deployment.
- Bot library: Verify that the library can speak the client’s JSON-RPC API over IPC. Support for JSON-RPC alone does not prove support for every transport.
- API methods: Confirm the node exposes the namespaces and methods the bots require.
- Concurrency and subscriptions: Test multiple bot connections and any subscription behavior with the actual client and library versions. The transport documentation does not establish every library’s concurrency behavior.
- Endpoint access: Make sure only intended local processes can access the socket or pipe, especially when bots run under different users or in containers.
