You can connect a controller to an Android phone or tablet by Bluetooth or with a compatible cable, then stream a PC game to the device. The key is that pairing is only the first step: Android handles basic controller settings, while the streaming app and the game determine whether inputs are recognized and how they work.
What you need to play PC games on Android
In this setup, the game runs on your gaming PC and is streamed to an Android device. The controller connects to Android, and the streaming client forwards its input to the PC. Moonlight says its Android app can stream games, programs, or a full desktop over a local network or the Internet, and send keyboard, mouse, and controller input back to the PC. Moonlight’s Google Play listing describes the app’s current capabilities.

For Moonlight, the listing describes two host routes: Sunshine, which it lists as supporting all GPU brands, and GeForce Experience/GameStream, which it lists as NVIDIA-only. The listing’s setup instructions say to configure the host, open Moonlight on Android, and pair with the PIN shown by the host. Those are the listing’s stated options, not a guarantee that every PC, driver, or network combination will work.

How do I connect a game controller to an Android phone or tablet?
Pair it over Bluetooth
- Put the controller into pairing mode using the instructions for that controller.
- On Android, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device.
- Select the controller’s name when it appears, then follow any on-screen prompts.
Google’s Android controller setup instructions document this Bluetooth route. Menu labels can vary by Android version and device maker.
Connect it by cable
Connect the controller to the phone or tablet with a compatible cable. The device and controller must support the connection and controller mode you intend to use; a successful physical connection alone does not guarantee that a particular game or streaming client will recognize it.
Check controller compatibility
Moonlight’s listing names PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Android gamepads. Its setup guide notes that some controller and Android-device combinations can have latency or disconnection issues, particularly PlayStation controllers over Bluetooth. If the controller connects but behaves inconsistently, check that it is using a mode Android and your streaming client support.

How do I map a controller for PC games on Android?
There are separate mapping layers. Android offers a small number of system-level changes; the streaming client forwards input; and the PC game (or its launcher) determines which actions those inputs trigger. Changing an Android button assignment is not the same as building a full keyboard-to-gamepad profile for every streamed title.
Change basic Android controller settings
Google documents these paths for Game Controller settings:
- Wired controller: Settings > System > Game controllers.
- Wireless controller: Settings > Connected devices > select the controller > Game Controller settings.
Depending on the device, the option or labels may look different or may not be available. Android’s documented changes include swapping two button assignments or exchanging the left and right joysticks; they do not amount to arbitrary keyboard shortcuts or a custom profile for every game. See Google’s Android Help instructions.

Set up controls in the game or launcher
After connecting the controller, open the game and inspect its input settings. If it offers gamepad controls, choose or configure them there. For Steam games, check the game’s and Steam’s controller configuration options where available; the precise controls and menus depend on the current app and title.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A game that only accepts mouse and keyboard input may not become playable with a controller just because Android recognizes it. You need a supported mapping at the game, launcher, or streaming-client layer for the actions you want.
Use Moonlight’s mouse emulation for desktop-style controls
Moonlight documents a controller-as-mouse option for desktop or mouse-driven interactions: hold Start to toggle it, move the pointer with either stick, press A for a left-click, and B for a right-click. This can help with basic pointer interactions, but it is not a complete keyboard-key binding system. Moonlight’s setup guide describes the controls.

Moonlight’s Play listing also claims support for force feedback and gamepad motion sensors on Android 12 or later. Whether those features work depends on the controller, device, client, and game.
When SDL mappings matter
For less common PC-side gamepad mappings, SDL’s controller mapping database explains how a mapping identifies a controller by GUID and name and assigns its buttons and axes. SDL identifies testcontroller (SDL3) and controllermap (SDL2) as utilities for creating mappings on SDL-supported platforms, including Android. This is technical guidance for SDL-based software; it does not mean a mapping can be added to every Android app or game.
Which streaming route should you choose?
| Route | Host scope described by the source | Input and mapping notes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moonlight with Sunshine | Moonlight’s listing says Sunshine supports all GPU brands. | Moonlight lists gamepad, keyboard and mouse input, plus controller mouse emulation. | PCs that are not limited to NVIDIA hosts, or users who want the documented mouse-emulation feature. |
| Moonlight with GeForce Experience/GameStream | Moonlight’s listing describes this host route as NVIDIA-only. | Uses the Moonlight Android client; the actual result still depends on the PC, controller, device, and network. | Users with an NVIDIA host that meets the current setup requirements. |
| Steam Link for Android | Steam provides an Android app for streaming Steam games. | Steam’s support material identifies Xbox One S controller support over wire or Bluetooth; verify current per-game settings in the app. | Users who launch their games through Steam. |
Moonlight says it can stream games purchased from any store; Steam Link is intended for Steam games. Choose based on the host PC’s supported software, where the game is launched, your controller and connection mode, whether you need mouse-and-keyboard input, and the quality of your network. Source details: Moonlight on Google Play and Steam Support.
Test the controls and troubleshoot recognition
- Connect the controller and confirm Android shows it as connected, if your device provides that status.
- Start the stream and open the game’s input settings. Check whether it offers a gamepad option and whether the expected buttons register.
- If the controller is paired but the game does not respond, check the controller mode and the streaming client’s supported inputs, then inspect the game’s own settings.
- If Bluetooth behavior is unreliable, try a compatible wired connection to help determine whether the issue is specific to the wireless connection or controller compatibility. This is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix.
Moonlight says performance depends on the client device and network setup. Its listing recommends a good wireless connection, strongly recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and recommends connecting the PC to the router by Ethernet. These are vendor recommendations, not a promise of a particular latency or stream quality. See the Moonlight listing.
