If Hulu buffers, freezes, skips, or shows a playback error, first check whether the problem affects one title, one device, or everything you try. Then restart Hulu, check for app and device updates, clear temporary app data if your device allows it, and test the connection. These low-risk checks can narrow the cause before you contact Hulu.
First, find out how widespread the problem is
Try a different episode, movie, live channel, or Cloud DVR recording. If only one item fails, the issue may be limited to that stream or a channel that is temporarily unavailable. Hulu also notes that buffering, freezing, skipping, or pixelation in a recording may have occurred during the original live stream.

Close and reopen the app
Fully exit Hulu rather than merely leaving it in the background, then open it again and retry the title. Hulu’s Cloud DVR guidance also recommends closing other apps or programs running in the background before trying playback again.

Update Hulu and your device
Check the device’s app store or app-management screen for a Hulu update, and check the device settings for a system update. The steps differ across Android, Apple TV, Fire TV, iOS, Roku, Samsung TV, game consoles, and other device families; use Hulu’s device-specific app and system update instructions rather than assuming one menu path applies everywhere.
Clear temporary app data if your device supports it
Some devices provide a cache or app-data control in system settings. If yours does, use the device’s own settings to clear temporary Hulu app files; Hulu says this can remove temporary files and free needed space. Menu labels and the effect of clearing data vary by platform, and not every Hulu app exposes the same controls. Check your device-specific Hulu guidance before using an option that may reset app information.

Test the internet connection on the viewing device
Run a speed test on the same device you use to watch Hulu, then compare the result with Hulu’s current recommendations. If a Cloud DVR recording is the only problem
Try another recording before changing network settings or resetting the device. A particular recording’s playback quality may reflect trouble in the original live stream, and a channel may have been temporarily unavailable when the recording was made. Comparing recordings helps distinguish a single-program issue from a broader playback problem.

If playback still fails after these checks, open Hulu’s Streaming Issues support section, which links to buffering help and offers chat and phone contact options. When explaining the issue, have the device name, whether Hulu and system software are up to date, and whether other titles play normally. These details can make the symptom easier to describe.
