For an internship interview, follow any dress instructions from the employer; if none are given, choose clean, comfortable clothing that fits the role and workplace. Bring resume copies, something to take notes with, and any documents requested. Prepare a few questions about the work, supervision, and expectations so you can assess whether the internship suits you, too.
What should you wear to an internship interview?
There is no single dress code for every internship. Start with the employer’s instructions, then consider the organization, industry, role, and interview format. If expectations are unclear, ask the interview coordinator: “I want to make sure I understand your organizational culture and dress appropriately. What is the recommended attire for my interview?” George Mason Career Services identifies business professional or business casual as possible safe defaults, while emphasizing that expectations vary: George Mason Career Services’ interview attire guidance.

- If the employer specifies a dress code: Follow it, including business professional attire when requested.
- If no dress code is given: Use the role and workplace as clues, and choose a neat, comfortable professional outfit appropriate to that setting.
- If the interview is virtual: Dress as you would for an in-person interview; also check that your chosen outfit works on camera.
You do not need to buy an expensive new outfit just for the interview. Suitable clothes you already own may work; discounts and secondhand options are alternatives. The University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts Career Services also suggests asking a career coach about professional-attire resources: University of Minnesota CLA Career Services. Clothing guidance should be adapted to local norms and your own identity and presentation rather than treated as a gendered uniform.

How should you prepare for the conversation?
Connect your experience to the role
Read the internship description closely and research the organization through its official website and recent public information. Identify a few examples from coursework, projects, previous jobs, volunteering, or activities that demonstrate relevant skills. Practice explaining what you did, how you approached a challenge, and what you learned.

Be ready for common prompts such as “Tell me about yourself,” “What are your goals?” and “Why do you want to work for this organization?” Some interviewers ask behavioral questions about how you handled a situation in the past. Texas State Career Services recommends preparing for common interview formats and questions: Texas State Career Services’ interviewing guidance.
Use a mock interview if you can
Practicing with an advisor or peer can help you refine your answers and receive feedback. Some university career centers offer mock interviews; check your own school’s services rather than assuming a particular option is available.

What questions should you ask?
Choose a few questions that fill gaps left by the job description and your employer research. For example:
- What kinds of projects or assignments might an intern work on?
- What would a successful intern accomplish or learn?
- Which skills are most useful to the team?
- Who would supervise or mentor the intern, and how is feedback given?
- How does the team work together day to day?
- What are the next steps and expected hiring timeline?
Skip basic questions the organization answers clearly on its website. Your questions should help you understand the actual work and expectations, not just signal that you prepared.
