For a live stream, check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room’s detected ingest settings separately from the viewer’s playback resolution. These checks distinguish an encoder mismatch from processing delays or device limits.
Check the resolution FFmpeg actually encoded
For a file upload, the most direct check is the encoded file’s video-stream dimensions. If you are resizing, FFmpeg’s scale filter sets the output width and height. For a 16:9 target, for example, use -vf "scale=1920:1080". Choose dimensions appropriate to your project rather than copying this example blindly.

Scaling directly to exact width and height can distort footage if the source has a different aspect ratio. Decide whether to preserve the full image with bars, crop it to fill the frame, or stretch it. FFmpeg documents aspect-ratio-preserving options such as force_original_aspect_ratio in its filter documentation.

-of json output.mp4Compare width and height with your target. Check display_aspect_ratio too if the source is not a standard 16:9 frame. The command selects video stream 0 and prints its codec, dimensions, display aspect ratio, and average frame rate as JSON. See the ffprobe documentation for details. This confirms the raster in the local encoded file; it does not show whether YouTube has finished processing it.

Common 16:9 reference dimensions
For standard 16:9 video, YouTube lists 1920×1080 for 1080p, 2560×1440 for 1440p, and 3840×2160 for 4K. Other aspect ratios do not have to use these exact dimensions; judge them against the intended shape. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
Confirm YouTube has processed the upload
The dimensions in the file and the playback qualities currently available on YouTube are different facts. YouTube initially processes uploads at lower quality; higher choices such as 1080p or 4K can take longer and may be missing for several hours. YouTube says processing time depends on factors including quality, length, format, and traffic. If ffprobe reports the intended dimensions, check the video again after processing has had time to finish rather than treating a temporarily missing option as proof of a bad encode.

Then test playback in a browser or on a device that supports the target quality. YouTube makes playback versions available across devices and networks, and the options a particular viewer can select may be affected by device or platform limitations. Check a live stream’s ingest separately
A live stream has a different verification path from an uploaded file. YouTube says it detects encoder settings automatically by default. In Live Control Room, review the detected ingest resolution, stream health, and any messages; compare the detected resolution with the resolution FFmpeg is configured to send. YouTube then transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats, so a viewer’s available or selected rendition is downstream of the encoder input and may not match it exactly.

Keep three points distinct: FFmpeg’s configured output, YouTube’s detected ingest settings, and the viewer’s playback rendition. If ingest matches your target but a viewer cannot select it, investigate stream health and playback-device support rather than assuming FFmpeg sent the wrong dimensions. YouTube’s live guidance covers automatic detection, stream health, and recommended settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use bitrate as a supporting check, not proof of resolution
Bitrate guidance can help identify an unsuitable encode, but bitrate alone cannot confirm width and height. YouTube’s current SDR upload recommendations, accessed in 2026, are:

These are YouTube’s recommended upload video bitrates, not guaranteed quality thresholds. Its standard-frame-rate classes are 24, 25, and 30 fps; high-frame-rate classes are 48, 50, and 60 fps. Consult YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the full guidance. Audio bitrate does not determine video resolution.

Troubleshoot a missing 1080p or 4K option
- The encoded file has smaller dimensions than intended: Check the FFmpeg output dimensions and scale-filter arguments, then encode again with the target width and height.
- The file has the intended dimensions, but YouTube shows only lower qualities: Allow processing more time and check again; higher qualities can take several hours to appear.
- The high-quality option is missing only on one device or browser: Test on another supported browser or device before concluding the upload is capped.
- The live ingest resolution is lower than the intended FFmpeg output: Compare FFmpeg’s configured output with the resolution detected in Live Control Room, then review stream-health messages and YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
- Live ingest is correct, but playback differs: Remember that YouTube transcodes live input into viewer renditions. Check playback separately and account for the viewer’s device and network.
- The bitrate looks appropriate, but resolution is uncertain: Inspect dimensions directly with
ffprobefor an upload, or check detected ingest settings for a live stream. Bitrate is not a resolution measurement.
