How to Configure Windows Virtual Memory When You’re Running Low on RAM

For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, leave the page file set to “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.” Windows uses this hidden storage file to extend the commit limit when physical RAM is full. It can prevent allocation failures, but storage is much slower than RAM. Change the size manually only when you are troubleshooting a specific allocation or page-file-growth problem, or when you need a predictable commit limit.

What Windows virtual memory actually is

Windows virtual memory combines physical RAM with one or more page files on storage. The page file is normally a hidden file named pagefile.sys. When Windows needs to keep more committed memory than can remain in RAM, it can move infrequently accessed modified pages to that file and reuse the freed RAM for more active work.

Microsoft describes the purpose this way: “Page files enable the system to remove infrequently accessed modified pages from physical memory to let the system use physical memory more efficiently for more frequently accessed pages.” The page file therefore extends capacity for committed memory; it does not turn storage into RAM with equivalent speed.

Commit limit versus physical memory

Windows tracks committed memory against a limit. The limit is approximately the amount of usable physical RAM plus the sizes of the page files. Task Manager shows the current committed amount and its limit together, for example as Committed 9.2/23.8 GB. The first number is the current commitment; the second is the maximum Windows can promise with the present RAM and page-file configuration.

If applications request more committed memory than that limit allows, allocation errors can occur. Increasing a page-file maximum can raise the limit when free disk space is available. It cannot make processors, graphics workloads, or frequently accessed data run as if the machine had more physical RAM.

Why paging feels slow

RAM has far lower latency than storage. A workload that repeatedly moves active pages between RAM and the page file can become sluggish, with pauses while data is read from or written to disk. An SSD generally handles those operations with less latency than a hard disk, but it still does not add physical-memory capacity. Sustained paging is a sign to reduce concurrent memory use, fix a leaking application, or install compatible RAM when the computer supports an upgrade.

Should you change the page-file setting?

Situation Recommended action Reason
Ordinary desktop or laptop use Keep Automatically manage paging file size for all drives enabled. Windows can size the file as workload and system conditions change.
You are unsure what value is appropriate Use the system-managed setting. A fixed value can be too small for a peak workload or consume disk space unnecessarily.
Repeated “paging file too small” or allocation errors Measure committed usage, free disk space and the workload; then consider a temporary or deliberate custom size. The problem may be a low commit limit, a full drive, a memory leak or insufficient RAM rather than one incorrect number.
Slow page-file growth during a known workload Use a custom initial size as a troubleshooting measure, following the sizing guidance below. A suitable initial value can reduce failures while Windows grows the file.
Need for dependable crash dumps Leave a page file on the Windows drive and allow Windows to manage it unless a documented diagnostic requirement says otherwise. Crash-dump requirements are part of page-file sizing, and disabling it can prevent expected dumps.

A page file showing 100% usage is not automatically a performance fault. Check whether the system is close to its overall commit limit and whether applications are waiting on substantial paging activity. The percentage for the file alone does not answer those questions.

Check memory pressure before changing anything

Do these checks while the warning or slowdown is occurring. They distinguish a page-file configuration issue from a program or hardware-capacity issue.

  • Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and, on the Processes tab, sort by the Memory column. Note the application or process consuming an unusual amount.
  • On Performance > Memory, record In use, Available and Committed. Compare the committed value with its limit, not just with the amount of RAM installed.
  • Check the drive that contains Windows and the page file in File Explorer. Growth can fail when that volume has too little free space.
  • Repeat the observation after closing the largest applications. If commitment falls normally, concurrent workloads may be the practical cause.
  • If one application continually grows while you do not add work, update or repair it and investigate a possible memory leak before fixing the page file.

Do not disable the page file as a general performance tweak. A no-page-file configuration removes part of the commit limit and can interfere with crash-dump collection.

How to configure virtual memory in Windows 10 or Windows 11

The labels are the same in current Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds, although the Settings layout around them can differ slightly.

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Select Advanced system settings. This opens the System Properties dialog on the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Performance section, select Settings.
  4. In Performance Options, open the Advanced tab.
  5. Under Virtual memory, select Change.

Keep the normal, system-managed configuration

  1. Confirm that Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is selected.
  2. Make sure a page file remains available on the Windows drive, normally the system volume.
  3. Select OK through each dialog. Restart only if Windows requests it.

This is the correct endpoint for most computers. Windows can adjust the file as the expected commit charge changes, while retaining a page file for allocation support and crash-dump needs.

Set a custom size for a specific problem

  1. Open the Virtual Memory dialog using the path above.
  2. Clear Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  3. Select the drive that should contain the page file, normally the Windows drive.
  4. Select Custom size.
  5. Enter an Initial size and a Maximum size. Use the sizing method in the next section; leave enough free space for Windows and other files.
  6. Select Set. This button is required; entering numbers and closing the dialog does not apply them.
  7. Select OK on every open dialog and restart if Windows asks.

After restarting, reopen the dialog to confirm the selected values. Then reproduce the workload that caused the warning and watch Task Manager’s committed value and limit. If the error disappears but the workload still pages heavily, the page file solved the limit problem, not the underlying RAM shortage.

How large should a custom page file be?

There is no single correct size for every PC. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance gives an initial-size starting point of about 1.5 times installed RAM when slow page-file growth is contributing to allocation errors. Treat that as a starting heuristic, not a performance formula or a requirement for ordinary use.

The final maximum must account for the workload’s peak or expected peak commit charge, crash-dump requirements, and free space on the selected volume. A larger maximum helps only when Windows can actually use the additional space and the drive has room for it.

Installed RAM 1.5× initial-size starting point Approximate entry in MB*
4 GB About 6 GB 6,144 MB
8 GB About 12 GB 12,288 MB
16 GB About 24 GB 24,576 MB
32 GB About 48 GB 49,152 MB

*The MB figures use 1 GB = 1,024 MB for convenient entry in the dialog. They illustrate Microsoft’s 1.5-times-RAM starting heuristic; they are not universal recommendations.

Choose a maximum that fits the free space and the measured commitment of your workload. Do not reserve nearly the entire drive for paging. If the required maximum would leave inadequate room for Windows updates, applications or user data, the system needs less simultaneous memory use, more physical RAM, or a larger storage volume rather than an arbitrarily large page file.

Example: an 8 GB computer

Suppose Task Manager shows commitment approaching its limit while a browser, a video editor and several large files are open. A troubleshooting configuration could start with an initial size of about 12 GB (12,288 MB), then choose a maximum supported by the volume’s free space and the observed peak commitment. The number is not a promise that the computer will perform like a 20 GB-RAM system. If the same workload remains active every day, reducing concurrent applications or upgrading RAM is the durable solution.

Verify the result and interpret what you see

  • Committed value rises but remains below the limit: Windows has room to satisfy allocations. A high value alone is not proof that the page file is failing.
  • Committed value reaches the limit: Close memory-heavy applications, increase the page-file maximum if disk space permits, and investigate the process driving the demand.
  • The page file reports high use but commitment is well below the limit: This can be normal. Look for actual sluggishness and sustained paging rather than treating the percentage as an error by itself.
  • The warning returns after a restart: Confirm that you selected Set, that the chosen volume has free space, and that the configured maximum is large enough for the workload.
  • The system becomes unstable or shows startup warnings: Return to the Virtual Memory dialog, select Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, apply it and restart if requested.

Troubleshoot “paging file too small” and allocation errors

The drive is nearly full

Windows cannot grow a page file beyond available storage. Free space on the page-file volume, remove unneeded files safely, or choose a volume with adequate capacity. Do not trade away the free space Windows needs for updates and normal operation.

A single process consumes memory continuously

Use Task Manager to identify the process. Save work, close it and check whether committed usage falls. Install a vendor update, repair the application or report the leak to its developer. A larger page file can postpone the error while the process continues growing, but it does not correct the leak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several heavy applications are open together

Close unused browser tabs and applications, render or export one project at a time, and avoid keeping multiple large virtual machines or creative projects active unless the computer has enough RAM. If this is your normal workflow, calculate the upgrade around that workload rather than relying on paging.

The custom value was entered but nothing changed

Reopen the dialog and verify that the automatic option is cleared, the correct drive is selected, and Set was pressed. Confirm the values after restarting when Windows requests one.

Disabling the page file appeared to improve performance

That change may hide disk activity briefly while reducing the commit limit. It can make allocation failures more likely and can affect crash dumps. Unless a documented diagnostic test specifically requires it, restore a system-managed page file.

Can an SSD or a page file replace adding RAM?

No. An SSD can reduce the latency of page-in and page-out operations compared with a hard disk, and it may provide more room for a page file. It does not increase physical-memory capacity, so an application that needs more active data than the installed RAM can hold will still experience paging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When memory pressure is constant, use this order of attack:

  1. Identify the process or workload responsible in Task Manager.
  2. Reduce simultaneous memory use or fix an application leak.
  3. Keep the page file system-managed, or use a measured custom maximum if allocation errors continue.
  4. Check whether the computer accepts a compatible RAM upgrade. Match the motherboard or laptop’s supported DDR generation, form factor, capacity limit and slot availability before buying.
  5. Consider an SSD if storage latency or free space is also a problem, while recognizing that it is a storage upgrade rather than a RAM upgrade.

Practical decisions by installed RAM

Installed RAM What virtual memory can help with What it cannot solve
4 GB Short bursts that exceed available RAM and modest allocation spikes, provided the drive has room. Modern multitasking that keeps many large applications active; frequent paging will dominate responsiveness.
8 GB Occasional browser, office and media workloads that briefly exceed physical memory. Regular editing, gaming or virtual-machine workloads that keep most of the commit limit in use.
16 GB Additional headroom for normal multitasking and intermittent peaks. A leaking process or a workload whose steady-state requirement exceeds 16 GB.
32 GB or more Large projects can still use a page file for commitment and crash-dump support. Unlimited workload growth; applications can still exhaust the commit limit or encounter a full volume.

These categories describe the role of the page file, not guaranteed performance thresholds. Your applications, files and peak commit charge determine the actual requirement.

When to return to Windows-managed sizing

Custom sizing is most useful as a controlled troubleshooting change. Return to the default when the allocation error is resolved, when you no longer need a predictable limit, or when the custom values cause warnings, instability or excessive disk consumption.

  1. Open Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings.
  2. Select Settings under Performance, then Advanced > Change under Virtual memory.
  3. Select Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  4. Select OK through the dialogs and restart if prompted.

Once restored, monitor the committed value during the workload that originally caused trouble. If the warning persists with a healthy amount of free disk space, focus on the application, malware, workload concurrency or a physical-RAM limitation instead of repeatedly guessing at page-file numbers.
