How to Configure Street Fighter II Controls, Difficulty, and Display Settings by Version

The correct Street Fighter II settings menu depends on the version you are playing. On the SNES release Street Fighter II’ Turbo: Hyper Fighting, open OPTION, then use CONFIGURE for punch and kick buttons and DIFFICULTY for the star-based challenge level. In Hyper Street Fighter II in Capcom Fighting Collection, remapping is under Options > System. Nintendo Switch Online’s SNES software controls the picture through Settings > 4:3, Pixel Perfect, or CRT Filter, while Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix offers 4:3 and 16:9.

Use the section for your exact edition rather than assuming that instructions from one port apply to another. The names, locations, and even the available display controls change between the original cartridge, emulated releases, collections, and HD versions.

Identify your Street Fighter II version before changing anything

“Street Fighter II” is a family of releases, not one universal settings screen. A cartridge running on an SNES, a game inside a modern collection, a browser version, and an HD console release can expose different menus. Start by checking the title screen or the name shown by your platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • SNES Street Fighter II’ Turbo: Hyper Fighting: the title screen has an OPTION entry with CONFIGURE and DIFFICULTY.
  • Super Street Fighter II: its Option Mode includes DIFFICULTY, KEY CONFIG, and SUPER MODE.
  • Hyper Street Fighter II in Capcom Fighting Collection: control changes are made through Options > System; its default Type A layout uses movement plus light, medium, and heavy punches and kicks.
  • World Warrior on Capcom Town: the official page supports keyboard, an external controller, and on-screen controls, with controller settings for Player 1 and Player 2.
  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix: gameplay can be displayed in 4:3 or 16:9; this is a display choice rather than a difficulty or control option.
  • Nintendo Switch Online SNES software: the emulator wrapper supplies the modern screen modes. These are separate from the original cartridge’s Option Mode.

If your menu does not match a set of steps below, stop and identify the release again. A missing option usually means you are following directions for a different port, not that the game is malfunctioning.

SNES Street Fighter II’ Turbo: Hyper Fighting

Open the Option Mode

  1. Start the game and wait for the title screen.
  2. Select OPTION.
  3. Choose the setting you want to change: CONFIGURE for attack buttons or DIFFICULTY for the computer opponents.

The SNES manual describes Option Mode as the place for game settings. It covers gameplay choices such as the timer and button assignments; modern television scaling is not part of this cartridge menu.

Remap punch and kick buttons

  1. In OPTION, highlight CONFIGURE.
  2. Highlight the punch or kick entry you want to change.
  3. Press the controller button you want assigned to that attack.
  4. Repeat for the remaining punch and kick entries until the layout suits your controller.

The game lets you assign the attack inputs rather than forcing you to use the original arrangement. Change one entry at a time and make a note of the final layout if more than one person uses the console.

Configure a Capcom Fighter Power Stick

For a Capcom Fighter Power Stick, highlight SET in the configuration screen and press any button. The manual describes this as an automatic configuration path. It is different from manually selecting every punch and kick assignment.

Change the difficulty stars

  1. Return to OPTION if necessary.
  2. Select DIFFICULTY.
  3. Move left or right across the star scale.
  4. Stop on the number of stars you want, then leave the menu using the normal confirmation or return command shown by the game.

The SNES manual’s rule is direct: “The more stars you highlight, the more difficult the opponents will be to defeat.” A higher setting changes the challenge posed by computer-controlled opponents; it does not remap your controller or change the television picture.

What you will not find on the original cartridge

The cartridge’s Option Mode is documented for gameplay settings such as difficulty, timer, and buttons. It does not provide the 4:3, pixel-perfect, or scan-line filters found in modern emulator software. If you are playing through Nintendo Switch Online, use the surrounding SNES software’s Settings menu for those picture choices.

Super Street Fighter II settings

Use Option Mode, not the Turbo instructions by assumption

The official Super Street Fighter II manual also places the relevant settings in Option Mode, but the labels are not identical to every other release. It lists DIFFICULTY, KEY CONFIG, and SUPER MODE.

  • Online Multiplayer Fun: Assembly is easy, and the feature-rich online multiplayer system lets you plug in and challenge friends in competitive showdowns from your game room or den.
  • DIFFICULTY: uses a star setting. More highlighted stars mean opponents are harder to defeat.
  • KEY CONFIG: the control-assignment area for changing the attack inputs.
  • SUPER MODE: a separate gameplay option documented by this release.

Because the exact port can change the wording and scale shown on screen, open the Option Mode belonging to your copy and follow its labels. Do not assume that a control assignment made in Turbo will be stored or displayed the same way in Super Street Fighter II.

Hyper Street Fighter II in Capcom Fighting Collection

Find the remapping screen

  1. From the collection’s game or system menu, open Options.
  2. Select System.
  3. Use the control settings there to change the assigned inputs.

Capcom identifies Options > System as the location for changing controls. This is a collection-level menu, so it does not follow the SNES cartridge’s OPTION > CONFIGURE path.

Understand the Type A layout

The default Type A arrangement combines directional movement with six attack inputs: light, medium, and heavy punch, plus light, medium, and heavy kick. The three strengths are distinct inputs, so a six-button pad or arcade stick can place each attack directly under a separate button.

If you prefer a different arrangement, keep the three punch strengths grouped together and the three kick strengths grouped together unless you have a specific reason to separate them. That preserves the relationship between the labels you see in move instructions and the buttons under your fingers. The game does not require a particular physical shape; it requires that you know which input is light, medium, or heavy after remapping.

Do not transfer SNES menu directions to the collection

The collection version and the SNES cartridge are different interfaces. If you cannot find CONFIGURE after opening the collection, that is expected: use Options > System instead. Conversely, instructions that mention a collection-wide System menu will not help when you are using an original cartridge without that wrapper.

The page provides a controller-settings area for both Player 1 and Player 2. Select the player whose inputs you want to edit, then use that controller-settings area to set up the available device. The exact controls shown can depend on whether you are using the keyboard, a connected pad, or the on-screen interface.

Why browser instructions differ from console instructions

A browser page has its own input layer. It does not expose the SNES cartridge’s Option Mode, and its controller settings are tied to the page rather than to a television emulator’s picture menu. If an external controller is not responding, first confirm that the browser version recognizes the device in its Player 1 or Player 2 settings before troubleshooting the game’s attacks.

Nintendo Switch Online: make the SNES picture fit a modern TV

Open the display settings

  1. Launch the SNES Nintendo Classics software in Nintendo Switch Online.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose one of the available display modes: 4:3, Pixel Perfect, or CRT Filter.

These choices belong to the Nintendo Switch Online software surrounding the game. They change how the original SNES image is presented on a modern display; they do not change Street Fighter II’s rules, controls, or computer-opponent behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4:3: the original SNES-style shape

4:3 presents the game in the original SNES-style aspect ratio with a slight horizontal stretch. It is the closest of the three choices to the conventional television presentation associated with the hardware, while still filling more of a modern screen than a strict square-pixel image.

Pixel Perfect: avoid uneven scaling

Pixel Perfect uses square pixels. Choose it when preserving the proportions of the original pixel art matters more than filling every part of a widescreen television. Depending on the screen, it can leave unused space around the game image; that space is the trade-off for avoiding non-uniform pixel scaling.

CRT Filter: add scan lines

CRT Filter overlays scan lines to imitate the appearance of a traditional cathode-ray television. It is an appearance filter, not a gameplay mode. If you want the cleanest image, use 4:3 or Pixel Perfect instead; if you want a period-style presentation, try CRT Filter and compare it with the unfiltered modes.

Keep the familiar SNES television shape 4:3 Uses the original-style ratio with slight horizontal stretch
Preserve square pixels Pixel Perfect Displays the artwork with square pixels, which may leave unused screen space
Re-create a CRT appearance CRT Filter Adds scan lines over the game image

If the picture looks stretched, switch from 4:3 to Pixel Perfect. If the image looks too stark compared with an old television, try CRT Filter. Neither choice requires changing the in-game control or difficulty menu.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix display options

Switch between 4:3 and 16:9

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix offers two gameplay display formats: original 4:3 and widescreen 16:9. Select the format that matches how you want the match framed on your television.

What 16:9 changes

The 16:9 mode zooms the image to fill a widescreen display and adjusts camera panning when necessary. Capcom’s FAQ states that “The 16:9 mode does not alter gameplay at all.” The change is therefore framing and camera presentation, not move timing, rules, character abilities, or the difficulty of the computer opponent.

Choose 4:3 when you want the original composition. Choose 16:9 when filling a modern widescreen is more important and you are comfortable with the zoomed framing. Do not treat the HD Remix setting as equivalent to Nintendo Switch Online’s Pixel Perfect or CRT Filter: those are different display systems in different releases.

Choosing a practical controller layout

For the SNES six-button arrangement

Start with the layout already printed or shown by your controller, then change only the buttons that feel inconvenient. The SNES Turbo configuration screen lets you highlight each punch or kick and press the desired replacement. A sensible custom layout keeps punch inputs together and kick inputs together, with light, medium, and heavy strengths in an order you can remember.

When two people share the console, write down the assignments or return to OPTION > CONFIGURE before a match. The most useful layout is the one both players can identify without pausing to guess which strength is assigned to which button.

For a six-button arcade stick

A six-button fight stick is a natural fit because the game has three punch strengths and three kick strengths. In the SNES Turbo version, a Capcom Fighter Power Stick can be configured automatically by highlighting SET and pressing any button. With other controllers, use the manual assignment process and verify every attack input before starting a match.

For the collection’s Type A controls

Type A already presents the standard directional movement and six separate attack inputs. Keep that arrangement if you are moving between games or following instructions that refer to light, medium, and heavy attacks. Remap under Options > System only when your device or muscle memory makes another arrangement easier.

Difficulty settings: what the stars mean

SNES Turbo and Super Street Fighter II

Both cited manuals describe difficulty with a star scale. Move left or right to highlight more or fewer stars. More highlighted stars mean the computer-controlled opponents are more difficult to defeat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The star scale is not a controller sensitivity setting and is not a display filter. If you are trying to make the picture clearer, use the platform’s display settings; if you are trying to make matches easier or harder, use DIFFICULTY.

Why you may not see the same number of choices

Different ports expose different menus and scales. The manuals establish the star-based behavior for the cited SNES releases, but that does not guarantee an identical number of stars or identical wording in another version. Identify the edition first, then report the choices exactly as they appear in that edition’s menu.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“I cannot find CONFIGURE.”

  • Confirm that you are using SNES Street Fighter II’ Turbo: Hyper Fighting. Its path is OPTION > CONFIGURE.
  • If you are in Capcom Fighting Collection, open Options > System instead.
  • If you are in Super Street Fighter II, look for KEY CONFIG inside Option Mode.

“My buttons changed, but the attacks are still wrong.”

  • Reopen the control screen and check each punch and kick entry individually.
  • Verify that light, medium, and heavy strengths are assigned to the buttons you intended.
  • For a Capcom Fighter Power Stick on SNES Turbo, use the documented SET automatic configuration path.

“The game is stretched on my Switch.”

  • Open the SNES Nintendo Classics software’s Settings.
  • Choose Pixel Perfect for square pixels, or 4:3 for the original-style ratio with slight horizontal stretch.
  • Use CRT Filter only if you want scan lines.

“Widescreen looks different, so did it change the game?”

In HD Remix, 16:9 zooms the image and adjusts camera panning, but Capcom says it does not alter gameplay. The change is visual framing, not a new ruleset.

“My browser controller does nothing.”

On Capcom Town, open the controller-settings area for the correct player and confirm whether the page is using the keyboard, an external controller, or on-screen controls. Browser input setup is separate from the SNES and collection menus.
