How to Configure Steam Frame Controller Bindings for VR Games

To configure Steam Frame controller bindings, pair the controllers, start the VR game, open the SteamVR dashboard, and choose Controller Bindings or Manage Controller Bindings. Select an existing profile or choose Custom/Edit This Binding, map the game’s named actions to the buttons and controls you want, save the layout, make it active, and test every essential action in the game.

If the game has no Steam Frame profile, SteamVR can fall back in this order: Frame Controller, OpenXR Generic Controller, then Oculus Touch remapping. If the title does not consume VR actions at all, switch to Steam Input, where Frame Controllers can be presented as a generic gamepad or as a keyboard and mouse, depending on the game and your bindings.

What Steam Frame bindings actually control

A binding is a translation layer between the controls on your Steam Frame controllers and the actions exposed by a particular game. The game does not necessarily ask for “the A button” or “the left trigger.” It usually exposes named actions such as jump, grab, teleport, menu, turn, or primary interaction. Your binding assigns a physical input—button click, trigger value, grip, thumbstick direction, touch, or menu press—to each of those actions.

That distinction matters when a controller image looks correct but an action still does nothing. A profile can show the right hardware and still omit an action the game requires. Always inspect the action list and its assigned inputs, not only the controller model illustration.

Pair and verify the controllers first

Steam Support says Steam Frame controllers normally pair automatically. If they do not appear in SteamVR, re-pair them from the Steam client:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Go to Steam Settings > Controller.
  3. Select Add Controller.
  4. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions for each controller.

After pairing, confirm that SteamVR identifies both left and right controllers before opening the game. Do not infer the controller type from the headset name: Valve identifies the controller as frame_controller and the headset separately as frame_hmd.

Open the binding editor for the running game

Bindings are selected for an application, so open the game before editing its layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start SteamVR and launch the VR game.
  2. While the game is running, open the SteamVR dashboard using the system/dashboard control on your headset or controller.
  3. Choose Controller Bindings or Manage Controller Bindings. The wording can vary with the SteamVR interface version and the application.
  4. Confirm that the selected application is the game you are currently playing. Editing a different application will not change the controls for the game in front of you.

Valve’s OpenVR binding workflow uses this screen to select an application, choose or create a binding, edit it, and replace the default binding. If the game has several executable entries, check the application name shown in the binding window before making changes.

Choose the right starting profile

The binding list may contain an official Valve or developer profile, community-created profiles, and compatibility layouts generated for another controller type. Start with an official profile when one exists, because it is the most likely to match the game’s intended action set. If no official layout is available, a community profile can work well, but inspect it before making it active.

What to check in a community profile

  • Action coverage: every required game action has an input assigned.
  • Hand assignment: left-hand actions are on the left controller and right-hand actions are on the right controller.
  • Input type: a game expecting a click is not mapped only to touch, and a game expecting an analog value is not mapped only to a digital press.
  • Compatibility mode: note whether the layout emulates another controller’s properties.
  • Physical comfort: frequently used actions are placed where they can be reached without releasing the grip or changing hand position.

A profile can be technically complete but uncomfortable. If you need to hold a grip while pressing a menu button, or if the two hands are reversed, use the profile as a starting point and edit it rather than assuming the game is incompatible.

Create or edit a custom binding

Choose Custom or Edit This Binding in the profile screen. The exact editor arrangement can differ by SteamVR release, but the underlying process is the same.

1. Identify the game’s action sets

Read the action names supplied by the game. Common categories include movement, turning, teleportation, grabbing, primary and secondary interaction, inventory, pause, and system or menu controls. Do not map by guessing from the labels printed on a controller diagram; map the game’s named action to the input that feels natural for that action.

2. Assign primary interactions

Map the actions you use constantly first: movement, turning, grab, and the main interaction. For each action, select the appropriate hand and input. A trigger may need an analog value for a gradual squeeze, while a trigger click may be a separate action. Likewise, a thumbstick can provide a two-axis value, a directional click, or a touch signal; choose the input type the action requests.

3. Assign grips and secondary actions

Map grip or squeeze actions to the control that can be held reliably while aiming or manipulating objects. Then assign secondary interaction, reload, inventory, or weapon-switch actions. Avoid placing two unrelated high-frequency actions on the same click unless the game explicitly supports a modifier or long press.

4. Map thumbsticks and directional controls

For locomotion, assign the thumbstick’s two-axis value if the game expects smooth movement. For snap turning, assign the relevant horizontal direction or action. If the game exposes separate up, down, left, and right actions, map those individually. Test the direction in the game: an axis that feels inverted in the editor can make movement or turning unusable.

5. Add menu and system actions

Do not omit menu, pause, recenter, or other system actions simply because the controller image shows them separately. A game may require a particular menu action to reach settings or to exit a vehicle. Assign system actions only where the game exposes them and avoid replacing the SteamVR dashboard gesture unless you intend to change access to the dashboard.

6. Remove duplicate or conflicting assignments

Review every action after the first pass. A single physical input may have been assigned automatically to more than one action, causing an unwanted jump, grab, or menu opening. Keep intentional combinations, but remove accidental duplicates and check that the left and right hand are not both driving the same action.

Save, activate, and test the layout

  1. Select Save Personal Binding or the equivalent save command in the editor.
  2. Make the saved layout the active binding for this game. Saving a profile does not necessarily make it the one the game uses.
  3. Return to the game and test the essential actions in a safe area or tutorial.
  4. Test both controllers independently, then test actions that require simultaneous inputs, such as holding grip while using a trigger or thumbstick.
  5. Return to the editor for any missing, duplicated, reversed, or uncomfortable action and save the revised version.

Some applications read their action configuration only when they start. If a corrected binding is not recognized, close and restart the game after activating the profile. SteamVR itself may remain open; the restart requirement depends on how that application initializes input.

What happens when no Frame profile appears

SteamVR documents a fallback sequence for games without a Frame-specific profile. It first looks for a Frame Controller binding. If none is available, it looks for an OpenXR Generic Controller binding and then an Oculus Touch binding, remapping the result to the Frame Controller layout.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

This fallback is automatic, but automatic does not mean complete. A generic or Oculus-based profile may expose only the actions that the original profile defined. Open the action list and verify locomotion, interaction, grip, menu, and any game-specific actions before relying on it.

Use compatibility mode when the game expects another controller

SteamVR can automatically create or adapt a binding when a game lacks one. Its compatibility mode emulates another controller’s properties so that the application’s existing layout can be used. Treat this as a compatibility bridge, not proof that every input is equivalent. Check hand orientation, trigger behavior, grip placement, and action coverage after the profile loads.

Use Steam Input for games that do not consume VR actions

SteamVR action bindings and Steam Input are different layers. A VR application that exposes OpenVR or OpenXR actions can use the Controller Bindings editor. A non-VR or hybrid title may instead read ordinary gamepad, keyboard, or mouse events.

For those games, configure the title through Steam Input. Valve says Frame Controllers can appear as a generic gamepad or as a keyboard and mouse, depending on the game and the configured bindings. In practice, choose Steam Input when the game’s control settings show gamepad or keyboard commands rather than VR action names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide which layer you need

  • VR action layer: the binding screen lists named VR actions and the game expects tracked-controller input.
  • Steam Input layer: the game expects conventional gamepad, keyboard, or mouse events.
  • Hybrid case: the title may use VR for tracking while reading movement or menus through a conventional input path. Configure each required layer and avoid assuming that a working SteamVR profile will also create gamepad events.

If a game responds to the dashboard but none of its in-game actions react, first confirm which input layer the title actually uses. Rebuilding a VR action profile will not fix a game that is waiting for a gamepad button.

Troubleshoot common binding failures

The controllers are not detected

  • Confirm SteamVR is running and both controllers are powered.
  • Use Steam Settings > Controller > Add Controller to pair again.
  • Verify that the left and right controllers are shown separately before launching the game.
  • Do not use the headset model as evidence that the controllers are identified correctly; the controller and HMD are separate device types.

The game has a profile, but a button does nothing

  • Reopen the active profile and confirm the intended action is actually assigned.
  • Check whether the game expects a click, touch, or analog value rather than another input type.
  • Confirm that the profile you edited is active; saving a personal copy without activating it leaves the previous layout in use.
  • Check for a duplicate assignment that causes another action to consume the input.
  • Restart the game if it initializes its action set only at launch.

The wrong hand performs the action

Inspect each action’s hand assignment, not just the overall controller diagram. Compatibility profiles can inherit left/right assumptions from the controller they emulate. Reassign the action to the correct hand, save it, activate the profile, and test both controllers separately.

The profile works but feels awkward

Keep the official or community layout as a baseline, then move high-frequency actions to controls reachable without changing your grip. Test the layout while standing, turning, and holding an object. Comfort is a valid reason to create a personal profile even when the default technically works.

SteamVR keeps selecting an unexpected layout

Return to the game’s binding page and check which profile is marked active. If the Frame profile is unavailable, SteamVR may be using the documented OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch fallback. Inspect that profile’s action coverage and replace it with a corrected personal binding when necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A non-VR game ignores the VR binding

Switch from the SteamVR action editor to Steam Input configuration. The game may be waiting for a generic gamepad or keyboard/mouse event, and Valve’s Frame Controller support can provide either mode according to the configured layout.

OpenXR and OpenVR details for advanced users

Valve documents an OpenXR interaction profile for Frame Controllers. An OpenXR application can request XR_VALVE_frame_controller_interaction and suggest bindings for /interaction_profiles/valve/frame_controller_valve. This is the application-facing description of the controller profile; it does not replace the per-game binding you select in SteamVR.

For OpenVR applications, the controller type is frame_controller. Developers can create action manifests and default binding files and include them with the application. Those files define the actions the player sees in the binding editor, which is why a missing action can indicate an application-side manifest limitation rather than a defective controller.

Valve also documents that Frame Controllers can be bound like any other OpenVR controller type. A developer-supplied default is useful, but players can still create a personal binding when the default placement, hand assignment, or compatibility mapping does not suit them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical profile-selection decision guide

  1. Frame profile available and complete: use the official Valve or developer profile, then adjust comfort-related placements if needed.
  2. Frame profile available but incomplete: create a custom copy and fill every required action before activating it.
  3. No Frame profile, OpenXR Generic profile available: inspect the fallback for hand correctness and action coverage, then test it in the game.
  4. Only Oculus Touch compatibility is available: use it as a starting point, verify every action, and correct any inherited hand or input-type mismatch.
  5. The game exposes no VR actions: configure Steam Input as a generic gamepad or keyboard/mouse layout instead.

Final pre-game checklist

  • Both Frame controllers are paired and visible in SteamVR.
  • The binding editor is open for the correct game.
  • An official profile is used when available; otherwise the fallback source is understood.
  • Every essential named action has an assigned input.
  • Click, touch, and analog-value assignments match what the game expects.
  • Left and right hand assignments are correct.
  • Accidental duplicate bindings have been removed.
  • The personal binding is saved and active.
  • Essential actions work in the game, including simultaneous inputs.
  • The game has been restarted if it did not reload its action set.
  • Steam Input is configured instead when the title expects gamepad or keyboard/mouse events.
