How to Configure Secure Remote Access for MongoDB (Atlas and Self-Managed)

A practical, deployment-specific guide to connecting to MongoDB remotely without exposing an unprotected database: private paths, ports, TLS, authentication, firewall rules and verification.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure remote access to MongoDB is a layered control problem, not a single setting. Put the database on a private network path whenever possible, restrict which source addresses can reach it, require TLS, authenticate every client with a least-privilege database user, and monitor the result. MongoDB Atlas and self-managed servers expose different controls: Atlas uses project network rules, database users and managed private connectivity, while a self-managed deployment requires you to configure bind addresses, host firewalls, authentication and TLS.

The procedure below separates those deployments, explains the relevant ports and connection options, and gives verification and recovery steps so you can connect from a remote application or administrator without placing an unprotected MongoDB listener on the public internet.

Start by identifying your deployment

The first decision determines where security settings live. Atlas is a managed service; you configure access in the Atlas project and consume a TLS connection string. With a self-managed server, you own the operating system, network controls, MongoDB configuration, certificates, patching and logs.

MongoDB Atlas

Atlas uses a deny-by-default security model. A client must come from an address in the project IP access list (or an approved private connection), use a database user, and connect with a TLS-capable driver. Atlas requires TLS to encrypt connections to databases. Control-plane administrators should also use multifactor authentication (MFA), which protects the Atlas account even if a password is exposed.

Self-managed MongoDB

A self-managed instance is secure only when every layer is deliberately configured. MongoDB’s hardening guidance says to ensure that only trusted hosts have access to MongoDB and warns that a publicly accessible bind address must not be used until the cluster is secured against unauthorized access. The operating-system firewall, cloud security group or network ACL is as important as mongod.conf; a correct MongoDB setting cannot compensate for an open perimeter.

Choose a network path before opening a port

For production, prefer a private route between the application and database: an Atlas private endpoint, cloud VPC/VNet peering, or a private network/VPN for a self-managed server. These designs keep database traffic off the public internet and let you restrict routes to application subnets. A public address with a narrowly scoped allow list can be appropriate for a temporary administration task or an architecture that cannot provide private connectivity, but it creates a larger attack surface and demands tighter monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Access design Source restriction Encryption and identity Operational trade-off
Public IP with allow list Specific public CIDR ranges in Atlas or firewall rules TLS and database authentication remain mandatory Fast to deploy and portable, but internet-reachable and sensitive to changing client IPs
Atlas private endpoint Private interface and cloud security controls Atlas TLS plus database or federated identity Strong isolation; requires cloud networking setup and may add provider charges
VPC/VNet peering Private routes between approved networks TLS and database authentication remain mandatory Low exposure, but address planning and cloud-account coordination are required
VPN to a self-managed network VPN membership, routes and internal firewall rules TLS should still be enabled; authenticate users independently Encrypted, limited-access trusted network, with VPN availability and logging to operate

Private connectivity reduces exposure; it does not replace TLS or authorization. A compromised workload inside a peered VPC can still attempt database connections, so retain source restrictions and least-privilege users.

Configure secure access to MongoDB Atlas

1. Create a private connection when production architecture supports it

In the Atlas project, open the network connectivity area and configure the private endpoint or VPC/VNet peering integration for your cloud and region. Add the corresponding private routes and security-group rules so only the application subnets can reach the cluster. Wait for the endpoint or peering status to become available before changing application connection strings. Keep a separate administrative path, such as a controlled bastion host, rather than allowing every employee workstation onto the database network.

2. Add the smallest practical network rule

  1. In Atlas, open Security and then Database & Network Access (the exact label can vary slightly by Atlas interface version).
  2. Open the project IP access list and add the application’s fixed egress address or the required private CIDR. Use a single host address with a /32 mask when one machine is sufficient.
  3. Do not use 0.0.0.0/0 for a production database. If a temporary rule is unavoidable during a controlled migration, attach an expiration, record the owner and remove it immediately after the test.
  4. Save the rule and wait for Atlas to apply it. A connection from any address not on the list should be rejected before database authentication.

When outbound filtering is enabled in your environment, Atlas documentation identifies TCP ports 27015–27017 for cluster hostnames or IP addresses. Permit those destinations from the application network only; do not open the range to all internet sources.

3. Create a dedicated database user

  1. In Database & Network Access, open the database users section and choose Add New Database User.
  2. Select a supported authentication method that matches your environment: password, AWS IAM, LDAP, OIDC/OAuth 2.0 or X.509. Use a separate identity for each service and administrator rather than sharing one credential.
  3. Assign only the roles required by that workload. A read-only reporting process should not receive a read-write or administrative role. Scope roles to the necessary database and collections where the available role model permits it.
  4. Store the secret in a managed secret store, not in source control, a container image or a shell history file. Set a rotation owner and date before handing the credential to the application team.

Atlas authorization is deny-by-default, so an authenticated user receives no useful access until a role grants it. Test the role with the same operations the application performs; avoid granting broad privileges merely to make an initial connection succeed.

4. Enforce TLS in the client

Use the Atlas-generated connection string and a current MongoDB driver. Atlas requires TLS, and current Atlas security documentation lists TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 as supported protocol versions. Do not disable certificate validation or use an “allow invalid certificates” option in production. If your driver exposes an explicit setting, set TLS/SSL to enabled and provide the system or organization CA bundle when your policy requires certificate pinning or a private trust store.

Atlas certificates are valid for 90 days from issuance and Atlas rotates them 42 days before expiration, according to current Atlas security documentation accessed in 2026. Drivers should validate the hostname in the connection string and trust the public certificate chain so this managed rotation does not become an outage.

5. Protect the Atlas control plane

Require MFA for every Atlas organization and project administrator. Give team members the least control-plane role that lets them perform their job, review activity logs, and remove unused users and network rules. Database credentials and Atlas console credentials are separate: protect both, and do not put a database password in an Atlas project description, ticket or chat message.

6. Test from the real source network

Run a driver-level test from the application host or its private subnet, not only from your laptop. Confirm DNS resolves the intended private or public hostname, the firewall permits TCP 27015–27017 as required, TLS negotiation succeeds, and the user can perform only the expected operation. Then test a deliberately unauthorized operation and confirm it fails with an authorization error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure a self-managed MongoDB server

1. Map the trusted network

Document the application subnets, administrator or bastion addresses, replica-set members and monitoring systems that need MongoDB access. Decide whether the server is reachable through a VPN, private subnet or a controlled public address. The default port is commonly 27017, but verify the configured value; a replica-set deployment may use the same or distinct ports per member. Your firewall must allow only the documented source CIDRs to the actual listener port.

2. Bind MongoDB only to required interfaces

Edit the server’s MongoDB configuration file and replace a broad bind setting with the loopback address plus the specific internal interface. A typical pattern is:

net:
  port: 27017
  bindIp: 127.0.0.1,10.20.30.15

Use the server’s real private address, not the example address. Do not bind to 0.0.0.0 unless every other control has been reviewed and the exposure is intentional. In a replica set, advertise names or addresses that every member and client can resolve and reach; an incorrectly advertised public name can bypass the private design.

3. Apply a narrow host and cloud firewall rule

  1. Allow inbound TCP traffic to the MongoDB port only from the application subnet, approved bastion hosts and required monitoring sources.
  2. Deny all other inbound sources, including the general internet. Keep SSH or remote administration on a separate restricted rule and never use the database port as an administration tunnel without documenting it.
  3. Apply equivalent rules in the cloud security group, network ACL and host firewall. The most permissive layer determines the effective exposure.
  4. Review IPv6 separately. An IPv4 rule does not protect an IPv6 listener; either restrict IPv6 to the same trusted sources or disable it where it is not needed.

4. Enable authentication and create least-privilege users

Enable authorization in mongod.conf and restart during a maintenance window. Before enforcing authorization on an existing installation, create an administrative user through the documented localhost exception or your approved bootstrap process; otherwise you can lock out every administrator. After the first login, create individual application users with only the required roles, then disable or remove temporary bootstrap credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
security:
  authorization: enabled

Use SCRAM credentials or an enterprise identity method supported by your MongoDB edition and driver. Keep separate users for applications, migrations, monitoring and humans. For human access, prefer short-lived or centrally managed identity where available, and record role changes for audit.

5. Enable TLS for client and internal traffic

Obtain a server certificate whose subject alternative names cover every hostname clients use. Protect the private key with filesystem permissions that allow only the MongoDB service account to read it. Configure the server for TLS, provide the CA file used to validate clients or peers when mutual TLS is required, and set the minimum protocol and cipher policy accepted by your organization.

MongoDB’s self-managed TLS guidance says TLS encrypts all MongoDB network traffic, recommends disabling TLS 1.0 and 1.1 where TLS 1.2 or newer is available, and requires strong ciphers with keys of at least 128 bits. Apply that policy consistently to drivers, replica-set members, monitoring agents and backup tools; one legacy client that cannot negotiate the policy should be upgraded rather than prompting you to weaken the whole cluster.

6. Restart safely and verify configuration

  1. Validate the YAML syntax and certificate file paths before restarting.
  2. Restart one member at a time in a replica set, maintaining a healthy primary and majority. For a standalone server, schedule downtime and confirm a tested backup first.
  3. Inspect the MongoDB log and service status for bind, certificate, key-file and authorization errors.
  4. From an approved source, connect with a TLS-enabled client and authenticate. From an unapproved source, confirm the firewall drops or rejects the connection.
  5. Check that a user with read-only privileges cannot write, create users or change cluster settings.

Understand ports, DNS and outbound filtering

For Atlas, the documented application connectivity range is TCP 27015–27017 when outbound filtering is enabled. Use the hostnames in the Atlas connection string because clusters can change node addresses during maintenance or elections. Permit DNS resolution to the resolvers your application actually uses; a rule that allows database traffic but blocks DNS can look like a MongoDB outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For self-managed deployments, there is no universal remote-access port beyond the value in your configuration, although 27017 is common. Replica-set discovery means clients may connect to additional members after the initial handshake, so every advertised member hostname and port must be reachable through the same private route and firewall policy. Never infer that changing the port alone provides meaningful security; source restrictions, TLS and authentication do the security work.

Pick the right identity model

Method Best fit Strengths Watch-outs
Password (SCRAM) Small teams and services without an identity provider Widely supported by drivers and simple to automate Requires secret storage, rotation and protection against reuse
Cloud IAM Applications already using the cloud provider’s workload identity Reduces long-lived database passwords Policy mapping and driver support must be tested
LDAP or OIDC/OAuth 2.0 Organizations with centralized workforce or service identity Central lifecycle, group policy and revocation Identity-provider availability becomes part of the connection path
X.509 Strong machine identity and mutual TLS requirements Certificate-based authentication and no shared password Certificate issuance, renewal and revocation need disciplined automation

Whichever method you choose, separate authentication from authorization. A successful TLS handshake proves an encrypted channel, not that the user should read or modify a particular database.

Verify the connection without weakening security

Symptoms and likely causes

  • Timeout: Check the source IP or private subnet, route tables, security groups, host firewall and whether the listener is bound to that interface. A timeout usually indicates network reachability rather than a bad password.
  • Connection refused: Confirm the MongoDB service is running, the configured port matches the client, and the process is listening on the expected private address.
  • TLS or certificate error: Verify the system clock, hostname in the connection string, certificate SAN, CA bundle and minimum TLS version. Do not solve this by disabling certificate validation.
  • Authentication failed: Check the username’s authentication database, mechanism, secret encoding and whether the account is locked or expired. Ensure the client is using the intended user rather than a cached credential.
  • Authorization failed: The network and authentication layers worked; review the user’s roles and the exact database or collection operation. Grant the smallest missing privilege, then retest.
  • Replica-set discovery error: Compare the members’ advertised hostnames and ports with private DNS and firewall rules. Every discovered address must be reachable from the client.

A safe validation checklist

  • Resolve every hostname from the application runtime environment.
  • Confirm only approved source addresses can complete a TCP handshake.
  • Inspect the negotiated TLS version and certificate chain in the driver or diagnostic output.
  • Log in with the dedicated application user and run one read and one expected write, if applicable.
  • Attempt an operation outside the role and record the expected denial.
  • Remove temporary access-list entries, test users and emergency firewall exceptions.

Operate the setup after launch

Review Atlas project access lists, private endpoints, database users and control-plane administrators on a schedule. For self-managed systems, review bind addresses, firewall rules, cloud security groups, listening sockets, certificates, database roles and operating-system patches. Alert on new public exposure, unexpected source addresses, repeated authentication failures and privilege changes.

Plan certificate and credential rotation before expiration. Atlas manages its 90-day TLS certificate lifecycle and begins rotation 42 days before expiry, but your clients still need valid trust stores and correct hostname verification. Self-managed certificates and passwords have no such managed safety net: assign owners, test renewal in a staging environment and document rollback. Keep encrypted backups and periodically prove that a restored cluster retains the same authentication and network restrictions.

What a secure final design looks like

An application reaches MongoDB over a private endpoint, peering link or VPN whenever feasible. Network rules admit only the application’s known addresses, and firewalls deny everything else. TLS protects every connection with current protocols and strong ciphers. Each workload authenticates with its own identity and receives only the roles it needs. Administrators use MFA for Atlas and controlled, auditable access for self-managed hosts. Logs, certificate status, user changes and firewall changes are reviewed continuously rather than only when a connection fails.
