To make OBS retry a dropped YouTube Live connection, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatic Reconnect. This can retry the encoder connection; it cannot fix an invalid stream key, restore a broken internet connection, or guarantee viewers will not see an interruption. Test the setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health before and during an important broadcast.
Turn on Automatic Reconnect in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Select Advanced.
- Find the streaming connection section and enable Automatic Reconnect. OBS’s overview guide identifies the setting under Advanced as “Configure Automatic Reconnect.” See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Apply or save the change, then test the stream before relying on it for an event.
OBS versions can differ. The OBS overview confirms the setting’s location, but does not establish current labels, default values, or a recommended value for optional retry-delay or maximum-retry fields. If your installed version shows those fields, use the descriptions in that version rather than assuming a particular value is universal.

What automatic reconnect can—and cannot—recover from
Automatic Reconnect is for retrying the connection from OBS to the streaming platform after it drops. OBS notes that dropped frames and intermittent disconnections can result from network issues between your computer and the remote ingest server, which are typically outside OBS’s control. - It may help when: the encoder-to-platform connection drops temporarily and a usable connection becomes available again.
- It will not repair: an unavailable or unstable network path, an incorrect stream URL or key, or a frozen camera or media source. The setting concerns the streaming connection; the cited OBS overview does not establish that it reconnects individual inputs.
- It is not failover: automatic retries do not create a second encoder or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. Viewers may experience a pause or loss of the stream while the connection is down.
Check the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check that OBS is configured for the correct stream.
- Verify that the stream URL and stream key in OBS match the values for that stream. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. See Manage live stream settings.
- If you reset the key, copy the new key from YouTube and update it in OBS. A key reset makes the previous encoder credential unsuitable for the stream.
Do not share the stream key. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.

Test the connection and leave upload headroom
Before going live
Start a test broadcast and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends testing before an event so you can catch encoder and connection issues in advance. Its encoder settings guidance covers setup, while Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder explains the encoder workflow.
While streaming
Watch the Live Control Room’s preview, stream health, and messages. A reconnect attempt does not tell you whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, so use those indicators to distinguish a restored connection from an ongoing problem. YouTube’s Streaming tips say a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

Check capacity, not just the reconnect setting
YouTube advises that the total streaming bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For example, if your stream’s total bitrate is 10 Mbps, the recommendation implies having at least 12.5 Mbps available upload capacity for the stream, before accounting for other devices or traffic. The calculation is 10 Mbps divided by 0.8; actual connection conditions can still fluctuate. Avoid saturating the connection with other uploads while live.

Troubleshoot repeated disconnections
