If a recorded lesson is black in OBS, first check whether the OBS preview is black or whether YouTube is disconnecting. A black preview usually calls for checking the lesson source, its playback settings, or rendering; dropped frames and disconnections point instead to the stream connection. There is no single confirmed cause without the file, source settings, OBS version, and log.
First identify where the picture disappears
Look at the active OBS scene and preview while the lesson should be playing. Check whether the lesson source is present and visible, whether its audio continues, and whether the YouTube output is black or instead dropping frames or disconnecting.

- OBS preview is black: start with the source and local playback checks below.
- Preview works but YouTube is black: compare the local preview with the actual output and inspect the active scene and stream output. The title alone does not establish whether the issue is in OBS output or YouTube.
- Video is choppy, frames drop, or the connection disconnects: distinguish rendering overload from network trouble. OBS associates dropped frames with network stability or bitrate to the ingest server; its connection guide covers that path: OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Check the recorded lesson’s Media Source
OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for media files. Its documented supported extensions include common video and audio formats; check the actual file type against OBS’s list rather than assuming every lesson file will play. See OBS Media Sources.

- Confirm Local File is enabled and points to the intended lesson file. If needed, browse to the correct file and apply the change.
- Check playback behavior: enable Loop if the lesson should repeat; enable Restart playback when source becomes active if it should restart when shown; and use Show nothing when playback ends if you do not want the final frame to remain visible.
- Use Close file when inactive only if its reload behavior when the source becomes active again is suitable for your scene.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and test playback. These controls govern file selection and playback lifecycle; OBS does not document any one as a universal black-screen fix.
Test hardware decoding as a controlled check
Media Source offers Use hardware decoding when available. OBS describes this as asking the GPU to decode certain file types when the GPU has an appropriate decoder. If the option is available, change only this setting and compare playback; then restore the original state if it makes no difference or worsens behavior. The documentation does not promise it will cure a black screen.

When VLC Video is a reasonable alternative
Try OBS’s VLC Video source when you need VLC’s extended media support and the lesson file is not working through Media Source. It is an alternate playback path, not a guaranteed fix. OBS says VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Configure the source with the lesson or playlist, then check visibility and playback in the scene. If playback is choppy or OBS is overloaded
A black frame is not, by itself, proof of a performance problem. But if the lesson stutters, rendering lags, or output is overloaded, reduce scene workload and test again. OBS notes that compositing and rendering consume GPU resources: OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

- Use media resolution appropriate to the output rather than unnecessarily oversized files.
- Simplify complex scenes and remove sources that are not needed in the 24/7 scene.
- Reduce resource-heavy filters and excessive browser sources.
- Use Media Source or VLC Video for video and audio files rather than an unsuitable source type.
OBS’s platform requirements are only a baseline, not a guarantee that a machine can handle a particular stream workload. The OBS System Requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 (“Big Sur”) or later with an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X window system or Wayland. It cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS.” See OBS System Requirements.

- Check what happens when the source becomes visible, including whether it starts from the beginning when expected.
- Observe the end of the lesson: confirm it loops or shows nothing according to your settings.
- Switch away from the lesson and back to confirm the scene transition behaves as intended.
- Check the actual stream output as well as the OBS preview.
These checks verify the sequence you configured; OBS’s guidance does not establish a specific soak-test duration for 24/7 use.
