How to Create a 24/7 Indian Music YouTube Stream with Shaka Player and FFmpeg

Use FFmpeg to send your music and a visual to YouTube Live; Shaka Player is optional and only belongs in the setup if you also want a player on your own website. For a continuous stream, you need cleared music, a verified YouTube channel, a protected stream key, an always-on encoder and a plan to monitor interruptions. The walkthrough below shows the self-hosted route, then a cloud option that does not need your computer to stay on.

How the parts fit together

FFmpeg reads your media, encodes it and sends the live feed to YouTube. YouTube handles the broadcast that viewers watch on YouTube. Shaka Player is a separate playback layer: it can play live DASH or HLS on a website, but it does not send your media to YouTube and is not required for a YouTube-only stream. See the FFmpeg documentation and Shaka Player project documentation.

Setup What it does When Shaka is relevant
YouTube-only FFmpeg sends the live feed to YouTube; viewers watch there. It is not needed.
YouTube plus your website YouTube remains the broadcast destination, while a separately hosted DASH or HLS feed serves a website player. Use Shaka only for that website playback. You must also operate the media delivery and player infrastructure.

A browser player does not eliminate the need for a working encoder or a stable source feed. Shaka’s FAQ also notes that live playback can depend on clock synchronization; encoder drift may need to be corrected at the encoder.

Clear the music before planning the broadcast

Confirm that you have permission for both the musical compositions and the specific sound recordings, for the territories where you will broadcast and for the intended use. A track you bought, a credit in the description, or permission to upload a video does not by itself establish that you can continuously livestream it. The exact India-specific licensing route depends on the repertoire and rights holders; do not assume one blanket license or Content ID alone clears every right. Check with the relevant rights holders or qualified counsel.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, interrupt it or terminate it. Even licensed material can be interrupted unless the rights owner allowlists your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and arrange any required allowlisting before you go live.

Prepare the channel and stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before your planned launch. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help.
  2. Create a stream in YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then choose the encoder or streaming-software workflow and create or select the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the current Live Control Room flow. Interface labels can change.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key. Put the server URL and key into your encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository or include it in screenshots. If it leaks, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  4. Choose the ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, and its developer guidance specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint on port 443. Use the RTMPS server URL shown for your stream when available; do not substitute a guessed endpoint. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and the RTMPS ingestion guide.
  5. Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and reports acceptable stream health. Start the public broadcast using the controls for your selected YouTube workflow; starting FFmpeg and making the broadcast public are separate actions in some workflows.

Prepare a loop that can run continuously

Make a continuous audio program

For a first setup, assemble the tracks into one long, properly licensed mix or program file. Check that transitions are intentional, the start and end join cleanly, and there is no silence or accidental dead air where the file loops. FFmpeg can loop a file, but it cannot make an abrupt ending sound seamless. If you use a playlist instead, make sure the playback process actually advances between tracks and returns to the beginning; a list of filenames alone does not create a reliable continuous program.

Provide a video picture

A music-only broadcast still needs a video feed for this example workflow. Use a still image such as licensed cover artwork, a channel graphic or a visual you have permission to use. Prepare it at the resolution you intend to stream and make sure you also have rights to the image. A still visual avoids encoding unnecessary motion, but it does not change the music-rights requirements.

Plan for the operational side of “24/7”

“24/7” is the schedule you are aiming to maintain, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. A self-hosted encoder needs power, suitable compute, a reliable upload connection, process monitoring and a way to recover after a crash, disconnect or machine restart. Test those failure and restart paths before relying on the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one live session will run or archive forever. If a continuous channel must also have archives, plan separate sessions and check the current YouTube behavior for your workflow.

Encode and send the stream with FFmpeg

The template below loops one audio mix under a still image and sends it to the RTMPS URL plus stream key. It is a starting configuration, not a tested end-to-end command. Install an FFmpeg build that includes the libx264 encoder, substitute your actual file paths and values, and verify the resulting feed in Live Control Room before relying on it.

  1. Choose output settings first. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for your selected resolution and frame rate. Set a constant video bitrate (-b:v), and keep -maxrate aligned with it for a CBR-style output. Choose an audio bitrate from the same current guidance. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and enough upload capacity for the selected bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or command will work.
  2. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. In this template the output frame rate is 30 fps, so -g 60 requests a keyframe every 60 frames, or two seconds. If you select another frame rate, calculate the GOP length to preserve a two-second interval, and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second recommendation.
  3. Keep the stream key out of the command text. Set the environment variables in your shell or use a private configuration method. For example, on a Unix-like shell set YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL to the exact RTMPS server URL shown in Studio and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY to the private key. Avoid saving the key in a script that others can read.
  4. Run the encoder. Replace the bitrate placeholders with values from YouTube’s current table, including units such as k where appropriate. Ensure the image dimensions match the resolution you chose.
ffmpeg -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i "cover.jpg"
  -stream_loop -1 -re -i "music-mix.mp3"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
  -c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE
  -f flv "${YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"

The command’s VIDEO_BITRATE, VIDEO_BUFFER and AUDIO_BITRATE strings are placeholders, not literal FFmpeg values: replace each with an appropriate value before running it. The example’s -re reads the audio at playback speed, and -stream_loop -1 repeats the mix indefinitely. The still image loops as the video source. For another frame rate, update both -framerate and -r, and adjust -g to a two-second GOP. FFmpeg’s documentation describes input and output options; option order matters because many options apply to the next input or output.

Start the command, inspect the preview and health indicators, listen for audio, and confirm the image and selected resolution/frame rate. YouTube’s encoder recommendations also call for testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health; see its settings and testing guidance.

Choose between a software and hardware encoder

Approach Potential fit What you must operate
Software encoder such as FFmpeg Useful when you want scriptable control over inputs, looping and output. The computer or server, FFmpeg process, network connection, monitoring and restart behavior.
Hardware encoder May suit a setup with compatible encoder hardware already available. The device’s configuration and recovery, plus the stream key, connectivity and monitoring.

The right choice depends on hardware you have and how you intend to automate and monitor it; the sources here do not establish a best hardware product. A VPS or other cloud computer is one possible way to host a self-managed encoder, not a requirement, and you would still be responsible for configuring and recovering the stream process.

Add Shaka Player only for a separate website player

If YouTube is the only destination for viewers, skip this section: viewers can watch through YouTube and FFmpeg already handles your encoder-to-YouTube path. If you also want playback on your own site, you need a separate hosted live DASH or HLS stream that Shaka can consume. The Shaka project lists support for live DASH and HLS, but it is a player, not an encoder or a streaming origin. You must provide and operate the media packaging and delivery that produce the manifest and media segments.

  1. Decide on the delivery path. Set up a separately hosted DASH or HLS source and determine how your encoder or media service will produce it. Do not assume the YouTube ingest URL is a website playback manifest.
  2. Configure the player on your site. Follow the current Shaka Player documentation for adding the player and pointing it at the live manifest. Confirm that your chosen browser, manifest, codecs and delivery path work together.
  3. Check timing and drift. Keep the server and playback clocks synchronized and monitor live edge behavior. As Shaka’s FAQ explains, clock synchronization can matter and encoder drift may require correction at the encoder.
  4. Operate both services. A website player creates another playback path to maintain: troubleshoot its origin, manifests and delivery separately from YouTube Live.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Studio receives no preview Wrong server URL or key, inactive encoder, blocked connection or incorrect output URL. Compare the URL and key with the active Studio stream, confirm FFmpeg is still running, check outbound connectivity and use the RTMPS endpoint supplied by YouTube.
Preview arrives but stream health is poor Insufficient upload capacity, variable output rate or a mismatch between the encoder settings and the selected stream. Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the selected resolution, configure CBR, test the connection under load and monitor health while streaming.
Video stutters or keyframes are flagged GOP/keyframe interval does not meet the platform recommendation, or the machine cannot encode consistently. Set a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), check the chosen frame rate and reduce encoding load or resolution if the computer cannot sustain the output.
Audio is silent, clipped or out of sync Incorrect input mapping, an unsuitable source file, encoding overload or a problem at the loop boundary. Check that the audio input is mapped to the output, preview the mix locally, listen to the live preview and correct the source or encoding configuration.
Stream stops when the machine restarts or loses internet The self-hosted FFmpeg process and its network path are not persistent through that failure. Set up process supervision and restart behavior, test recovery deliberately and monitor the channel; a restart may require checking Studio and starting the broadcast again.
YouTube replaces or ends the music stream A third-party content match or rights-holder enforcement. Resolve the rights issue with the appropriate rights holders and confirm any required Content ID allowlisting. Do not repeatedly restart uncleared material.
Website playback fails while YouTube works The separate DASH/HLS origin, manifest, delivery, player compatibility or clock/timing path is failing. Test the website manifest and media delivery independently, check Shaka’s playback diagnostics and verify clock synchronization.
