How to Configure OBS Replay Buffer Without Interrupting a YouTube Loop Stream

Use OBS Replay Buffer to save recent footage locally without intentionally stopping your YouTube stream. Configure its output settings and separate hotkeys, then test the setup before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can save a recent clip with OBS Replay Buffer while keeping your YouTube stream running: enable the buffer in Settings → Output, assign its own Save Replay control, and do not use Stop Streaming. The buffer saves footage locally; it is separate from both the live broadcast and YouTube’s viewer-facing DVR. This setup avoids intentionally stopping the stream, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted output on every computer—test it before a public broadcast.

First, separate the three meanings of “loop” and replay

A “YouTube loop stream” can mean a broadcast that continues while a video repeats, or simply a live broadcast during which you capture recent footage. These are distinct functions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • OBS Replay Buffer temporarily retains recent output so you can save a local clip.
  • OBS Media Source → Loop restarts a media file after playback ends. It affects that source, not whether the YouTube broadcast stays live indefinitely.
  • YouTube DVR lets viewers pause or rewind a live stream. It is not a local recording or OBS Replay Buffer. See YouTube’s DVR help.

For the workflow below, leave the stream running and use Replay Buffer’s separate controls to save a clip.

Configure Replay Buffer in OBS

  1. Choose the buffer settings. Open Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer. Set the Maximum Replay Time to the amount of recent footage you want available. If your OBS version exposes Maximum Memory, set a limit appropriate for your system. A longer buffer retains more footage and can require more resources; there is no universal safe duration. OBS’s streaming and recording guide describes output configuration, including Replay Buffer options.
  2. Choose where clips go. Set a recording path and a filename convention you can recognize later. Confirm you have enough storage for the clips you intend to keep; Replay Buffer does not make them available in YouTube Studio.
  3. Set separate hotkeys. In Settings → Hotkeys, assign distinct keys for Start Replay Buffer, Stop Replay Buffer, and Save Replay. Keep them different from Start Streaming and Stop Streaming so a clip-saving action cannot be confused with ending the broadcast. OBS’s keyboard-shortcuts guide covers the available hotkey controls.
  4. Start the buffer. Start Replay Buffer before the moment you want to capture. Some older OBS guidance describes starting it automatically when streaming; check whether that option exists and works as expected in your installed version rather than relying on it without testing.
  5. Go live and save a replay. Start your YouTube stream normally and confirm OBS shows it as live. When you want a clip, use the Save Replay hotkey or control. Do not select Stop Streaming. After saving, check the configured folder for the clip.

Choose settings that fit your machine and editing needs

There is no broadly supported “best” replay duration or hardware configuration. Choose based on how much recent footage you need, available memory and encoder capacity, the output mode, and how you plan to edit the saved file.

Native Linux system plug-and-play support is not available, while SDK development documents are provided for custom secondary development
  • Retention: Set the shortest maximum replay time that covers the moments you want to recover. Increase it only after testing resource use and performance.
  • Recording mode: OBS’s Advanced output mode can expose separate streaming and recording options. If recording settings differ from stream settings, the extra work can use additional resources; check the settings in your OBS version and test under the same conditions as your real broadcast.
  • File handling: Use a predictable folder and filename pattern, then verify that saved clips open in your intended editing workflow.
  • Looped media: If a Media Source should repeat, enable its Loop property separately. That setting repeats the file; it does not control Replay Buffer or guarantee broadcast continuity. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Test before relying on it live

Use a local test or an unlisted/private YouTube broadcast before using the setup publicly. OBS’s overview recommends testing that settings work, the stream runs smoothly, and scenes are configured before going live.

  1. Start the Replay Buffer and confirm it is active in OBS.
  2. Start a test stream and let it run long enough to exercise the buffer and your usual scene or looped source.
  3. Trigger Save Replay without touching Stop Streaming.
  4. Check that the clip appears in the configured folder and plays as expected.
  5. Watch OBS’s performance indicators during the test. If performance worsens, shorten the buffer or reduce other output work, then test again.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The YouTube stream stops when you try to save a clip. You may have triggered Stop Streaming rather than Save Replay, or assigned overlapping hotkeys. Review Settings → Hotkeys. Give replay and stream controls distinct keys, then test them privately.
No replay file appears. The buffer may not have been started, the save control may not have fired, or the configured folder may be different from the one you checked. Confirm the buffer is active, check the recording path and filename settings, trigger Save Replay, and inspect that folder.
The clip is shorter than expected. The buffer may have been running for less than the selected maximum replay time, or the configured duration may be shorter than the moment you need. Start the buffer earlier and verify the maximum replay time in Settings → Output.
OBS performance worsens while live. Replay retention or recording work may add resource load; available capacity depends on the computer and its other OBS tasks. Shorten the buffer, review recording options, and retest before streaming publicly. Do not assume Replay Buffer is performance-free.
The video file repeats, but the broadcast does not behave as expected. The Media Source’s Loop option controls playback of that source, not the live broadcast’s continuity. Check the source’s loop setting separately from stream status and Replay Buffer controls.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without leaving OBS or a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a camera feed.
