To capture a Hindi news page without garbled or missing Devanagari, wait until the intended article content is rendered, then wait for the fonts used by that content to finish loading and inspect the expected Devanagari font before taking the screenshot. In Playwright, document.fonts.ready is a useful part of that workflow, but it does not prove that every declared font loaded. Validate the target font and the resulting image, and keep the browser environment consistent when comparing captures.
Capture only after the page and its fonts are ready
A navigation event such as load does not necessarily mean a modern news page has finished rendering its article, overlays, or webfonts. First reach the page state you actually want to capture—for example, after the headline and body appear and after you have made the intended consent-banner choice. Then wait for fonts and layout before taking the image.
Playwright example
This Node.js example navigates to a page, waits for a chosen article element, waits for used fonts, reports font-loading state, and saves a full-page screenshot. Replace the URL and selector with the target site’s values. It does not assume that a particular news website or font has been tested.

The selector wait is deliberately separate from the font wait: it gives the application a chance to render the relevant content before the font set is evaluated. MDN describes document.fonts.ready as fulfilling when loading and layout operations of all used fonts are done; unused declared faces may remain unloaded. See MDN’s Document: fonts reference.
Check the intended face, not just the promise
Inspect the logged FontFace statuses for the face the Hindi text should use. A fulfilled promise and document.fonts.status alone do not establish that a particular declared face loaded successfully or supplied every needed glyph. If the site exposes no clear font-face name, inspect its computed CSS and network/font loading behavior, then judge the actual rendered text visually.

Validate the Devanagari in the captured image
Check the headline, article paragraphs, captions, navigation, and any text that mixes Latin characters with Devanagari. Look for missing glyphs, illegible marks or conjuncts, suspicious line breaks, clipping, and an unexpected fallback typeface. These are practical visual checks, not a universal automated test of Devanagari rendering.
- For exact wording, compare the page’s DOM text or an accessibility/text snapshot as well as the screenshot. An image alone is not a reliable way to establish every word.
- Choose a viewport screenshot when the task concerns a visible screen state; use
fullPage: truewhen the entire scrollable article is needed. Playwright documents both screenshot capture and itsfullPageoption in the Page API. - If a webfont appears late, capture again after the relevant content and font have settled rather than relying on an arbitrary short delay.
When you control the website, prioritize a Devanagari font
Put an appropriate Devanagari family before broad fallback families in the CSS stack for Hindi content. Noto recommends placing the family for the page’s most important script first because browsers use fallback when that face lacks required characters. For example, a Hindi-only sans-serif stack should prioritize a suitable Devanagari sans face, followed by appropriate broader and generic fallbacks. A serif design should use a matching Devanagari serif family before broader serif fallbacks. Do not copy a multi-script stack intended for a page using several scripts without adapting it to the page. See Noto’s guidance on using Noto fonts.

The site’s font-display setting also affects what readers see while a webfont loads. Chrome for Developers describes swap, optional, and fallback as options that avoid hiding text during loading; this is a site-author setting, not a switch an agent can impose on an arbitrary page. Keep the capture environment reproducible
Rendering can vary with browser engine and version, operating system, installed fonts, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Playwright cautions that these factors can produce screenshot differences. For a meaningful comparison, record the Playwright version, browser engine and version, OS or container image, headless setting, viewport, and installed fonts; hold them steady between captures. Consult Playwright’s visual comparison guidance and Playwright’s Docker guide. The Docker guide recommends aligning the image version with the package and pinning an image version where possible.

Chromium’s source change dated March 4, 2026 documents platform-specific Devanagari default mappings: Noto Sans Devanagari for Linux standard and sans-serif, Noto Serif Devanagari for Linux serif, Nirmala UI on Windows, and Devanagari MT / ITF Devanagari on macOS. That source change does not establish that every deployed browser build or container has those fonts installed. Treat the actual font files and rendered page in your environment as decisive. Why Hindi text can look broken
- Capture happened too early: the page may have rendered before its webfont loaded. Wait for the desired content, await
document.fonts.ready, then check the relevant face. - The requested font failed or lacks a glyph: a blocked or unavailable font file, or missing character coverage, can make the browser use another face in the CSS stack or a system fallback. Check the face status and the rendered result.
- Fallback differs by environment: system fonts and browser defaults vary. Record the OS/container and installed fonts instead of assuming the same fallback exists everywhere.
- The font-display behavior shows fallback first: a site’s font-loading policy can affect what is visible at capture time. Agents visiting other people’s sites cannot generally change that site-level rule.
Troubleshoot failed or inconsistent captures
Text is still in the wrong typeface after the wait
Confirm that the Hindi content was present before awaiting fonts, identify the font family in the page’s CSS, and inspect matching entries in the font report. A completed wait is not proof that the intended face supplied the text. Check whether the font request failed or whether the face lacks the characters in question; then inspect the CSS fallback and installed fonts.

The script waits indefinitely on fonts
Log the browser, Playwright, OS/container, and font-face statuses, and reproduce with the same page and image. A GitHub issue filed September 29, 2026 reports a timeout in a reporter’s Linux WebKit 1.63.0 reproduction while a 1.60.0 control completed. This is a version- and environment-specific report, not evidence that document.fonts.ready generally fails. See Playwright issue #42986. If you need a workaround, choose it only after reproducing the problem in your own target environment; do not silently treat a timeout as proof that fonts are ready.
The screenshot differs between runs or machines
Compare the browser engine/version, OS or container image, installed font files, headless mode, viewport, and page state. Pin and align the Playwright package and container image, and compare captures from the same environment before diagnosing a change in the page itself.

Visible text looks right, but accuracy matters
Check the DOM text or an accessibility/text snapshot alongside the image. The visual capture helps assess presentation; it does not reliably prove the exact text content.
