To configure multiple monitors in Windows 11, connect them, open Settings > System > Display, identify and arrange the screens, then choose a display mode and adjust each screen’s settings individually. Start with the recommended scale and resolution; change HDR or refresh rate only if your display supports it or you’re troubleshooting a problem.
1. Connect the monitors and open Display settings
Connect each screen to your PC or dock and check that the connections are secure. Once Windows detects more than one display, open Settings > System > Display. Windows’ display arrangement controls appear when multiple screens are detected. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor setup guide also recommends checking Windows Update if needed.

If a display is missing
In Display settings, expand Multiple displays and select Detect. For a wireless display that is connected but not listed, use Connect in that section. Microsoft also describes connecting a wireless display adapter through Windows’ Cast controls; the exact path depends on your equipment.

2. Identify and arrange the screens
In Display settings, select Identify. Windows shows a number on each screen; match each number to the physical monitor it appears on. Then drag the numbered rectangles so their relative positions match your desk—for example, put the rectangle for a monitor on your left to the left of the other one.

4. Set scale, resolution and orientation for each display
In Settings > System > Display, select the screen you want to change before adjusting its options. Under Scale & layout, use the setting marked Recommended as a starting point for scale and resolution. The available choices depend on the display and its hardware, so two monitors do not have to use identical settings. See Microsoft’s guidance on screen resolution and layout.

When an image looks soft or oddly sized
A resolution below the display’s native resolution can make text less sharp. Depending on the monitor, the image may also look small, centered, bordered by black, or stretched. If the resolution changes unexpectedly, Microsoft suggests checking for graphics-driver updates through Windows Update.
When to change orientation
Change orientation only if your setup calls for it, such as a screen mounted vertically. Windows recommends an orientation; a screen set to portrait must also be physically rotated to match.

5. Adjust HDR or refresh rate only when relevant
HDR
Select the HDR-capable monitor in Display settings to inspect its HDR capabilities and controls. HDR availability is display-specific. Microsoft notes that an external HDR display connected to a laptop may initially be duplicated, a configuration that does not support HDR on that external screen; choose Extend these displays instead. SDR content brightness may need adjustment, and its appearance varies by display make and model. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.
Refresh rate
Changing refresh rate is not a required setup step. If video playback stalls or repeatedly starts and stops across multiple monitors, differing refresh rates are one possible cause. Microsoft recommends matching the monitors’ refresh rates in that situation; see its video playback guidance.

6. Set window behavior for docking, if you use a dock
Windows includes preferences to remember window locations based on monitor connection and to minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. It can restore window locations when the computer is re-docked. These options are useful for a changing desk setup, but they are not needed to arrange the screens.
