An ink drop is a temporary, one-use resource created by a card effect in Disney Lorcana. Each drop pays for 1 ink, can be spent on the turn it is created, and is removed from the game once used. It does not stay in your inkwell.
How do you get ink drops?
Ink drops are created by card effects; they are not added to your inkwell through the normal process of inking a card. Disney Lorcana by Ravensburger introduced the mechanic with the Hyperia City set and says effects across every ink-color combination can create drops—not only Sapphire. The examples below are from the official Ink Drop Deep Dive, published September 29, 2026.

- Tadashi Hamada – Making Waves: When this character is banished, its effect creates two ink drops.
- Higitus Figitus: This song creates three ink drops.
When can you spend an ink drop?
You can use a drop during the same turn the effect creates it. Each drop contributes 1 ink toward the cost of a card or other play that can be paid for with ink. Once spent, the drop is removed from the game; it is not available for a later turn.
The official article illustrates the timing with Higitus Figitus: singing it with a Singer 6 can help you play an eight-cost character as early as turn five. That is an example of a possible play line, not a guarantee for every game; it depends on having the relevant cards and being able to play the song and character.

Do ink drops change what a card does?
Some card text grants a specific benefit when a card is played using an ink drop. That benefit is not automatic for every card, so read the individual card’s text.
- Madam Mim – Resourceful Trickster: Its on-play ability activates when it is played using ink drops. Its Bauble Game ability can also give future value to ink drops.
- Jousting Match: The song deals two damage normally, or five damage when played using an ink drop.
Spend drops now or save them for a bigger play?
The practical choice is whether to use available drops to play multiple smaller characters or hold them for a larger play. The better option depends on the cards in your hand and the effects they enable. Ravensburger’s explanation gives examples of how the mechanic works, but does not report comparative tournament results or establish that one approach is generally stronger.
