You reach it from the selected microphone’s properties page under Settings > System > Sound. Windows does not offer a numeric gain target, so you set the slider by recording a short test, playing it back, and adjusting until your voice sounds clear and is not clipped or faint.
What Windows 11 calls “gain”
Most people searching for microphone gain are looking for a preamp or boost control. Microsoft’s Windows 11 documentation does not use that word. The setting that adjusts how strongly your microphone signal is captured is called Input volume, and it appears only after you open a specific input device. Some microphones and drivers add their own level or boost controls in a separate manufacturer utility, so if you see an extra control elsewhere, that is a device-specific option rather than part of the standard Windows path.

Set the input level in Sound settings
These steps follow Microsoft’s official microphone setup instructions for Windows 11. Connect the microphone before you begin, because Windows only lists devices it can currently see.

- Under Input, select the microphone you want to use. This opens its properties.
- Under Input settings, select Start test and speak at your normal speaking volume and distance from the microphone.
- Select Stop test, then select Play to hear the recorded sample.
- If the recording is too quiet or too loud, adjust the Input volume slider, then repeat the test and playback.
Microsoft does not prescribe a single slider position. The right value depends on the microphone, how far you sit from it, and your room. Aim for a recording where your voice is easy to hear and does not distort on louder syllables. If you speak loudly, a lower setting usually avoids distortion; if you whisper or sit far back, a higher setting may be needed.

When the level is low or the microphone is missing
If adjusting Input volume does not help, work through the checks below in order. The first two resolve most cases.
Confirm the connection and the selected device
- Check that the microphone or headset is plugged in fully and positioned close to your mouth or the front of the device.
- Go to Settings > System > Sound > Input and select the device you actually intend to speak into. A laptop with several inputs may default to the built-in array even when your headset is connected.
- Run the test and listen to the playback again after each change.
Check the mute control
Some microphones and headsets have a physical mute switch or button. If yours has one, make sure it is off. A muted device can look correctly selected while producing no sound.

Review microphone privacy settings
Windows can block apps from using the microphone even when the device works. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and confirm that microphone access and app access are turned on. Desktop apps do not appear in the individual app list on that page. Instead, use the separate Let desktop apps access your microphone control. If a traditional program such as a video call application records silence while the Sound test works, this is the first place to look.

Reinstall or update the audio driver
If Windows still does not detect the microphone after the checks above, the audio driver is the next step. Microsoft’s guidance is to open Device Manager, uninstall the audio device driver, and then restart and update the driver. Follow your PC or microphone manufacturer’s instructions where they differ, because some laptops rely on a vendor-specific audio driver package.

Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
For general audio problems, Microsoft points users to the Get Help audio troubleshooter. It checks device selection, hardware connections, mute controls, and device settings, so it is worth running before you change drivers if the problem is not clearly tied to one device.
When a headset or external microphone is worth considering
You do not need to buy hardware to adjust Input volume. An external USB microphone or a headset becomes relevant when the built-in microphone is unsuitable for your use, for example when voice typing consistently picks up fan noise or distant room echo. Microsoft’s voice-typing troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a headset or external microphone in that situation. When comparing hardware, the main questions are whether the device connects to your PC and whether it fits how you will use it. Microsoft’s pages do not rank particular brands or models.

Limits of this procedure
These steps describe the standard Windows 11 Sound workflow as Microsoft documents it in its support pages, checked in early October 2026. Windows updates, driver versions, and hardware can change the labels or add device-specific controls, so the on-screen names may differ slightly. Some microphones expose additional gain or boost options only through their manufacturer’s software, and those options are outside the Windows path described here.

- The procedure applies to Windows 11. Windows 10 uses similar Sound pages, but its menu labels may differ.
- Input volume controls the level Windows captures from the selected device. It does not replace room acoustics, microphone placement, or the level setting inside a specific application.
Keep the test simple: record, play back, adjust, and repeat until your voice sounds clear at your normal speaking distance.
