For a typical stereo devotional livestream, configure FFmpeg to encode AAC audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Use -b:a 128k to set the bitrate. The devotional content and 24/7 duration do not call for a different audio bitrate; choose settings for the actual channel layout and keep the complete stream within your available bandwidth.
Set the FFmpeg audio bitrate for stereo
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends AAC audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. The following example applies those audio settings while copying the video stream:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v copy
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
- Replace
input.mp4with your source file or input. - Replace the destination with the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.
- Run a test and check Live Control Room’s stream health and audio before relying on the setup continuously.
Use the ingest address YouTube provides for your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. The example’s -f flv output is for this RTMP/RTMPS-style destination.

What -b:a 128k does
The FFmpeg option -b:a sets the audio encoder bitrate; 128k means 128 kilobits per second. In this command, -c:a aac selects FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder. For that encoder, specifying -b:a activates constant-bitrate (CBR) audio encoding. YouTube also recommends CBR for stream encoding; its guidance concerns stream bitrate, while the CBR behavior described here is specific to the native AAC encoder’s bitrate option.

The native AAC encoder’s documented default is 128 kbps, but writing -b:a 128k explicitly makes the intended setting visible. FFmpeg’s generic documentation describes b as setting bit rate in bits per second. Encoder options can differ: if you choose another AAC encoder, check that encoder’s documentation and confirm it is available in your FFmpeg build.
Choose settings for the channel layout
| Audio layout | YouTube Live recommendation | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo | AAC, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | Ordinary two-channel program audio. |
| 5.1 surround | AAC, 384 kbps, 48 kHz | Only when the source mix and encoded channel layout are genuinely 5.1. YouTube’s guidance says 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. |
| Mono or another layout | No separate mono recommendation is stated in the cited live settings guidance. | Set the intended channel layout deliberately and inspect the encoded output rather than assuming the stereo recommendation applies unchanged. |
Do not use the 5.1 bitrate for a normal stereo stream. The devotional genre does not change the technical recommendation: base the setting on the mix and YouTube’s live ingest guidance, not the type of program.

Check the video and output options before using stream copy
-c:v copy avoids re-encoding video, but it is suitable only if the input video codec and container path are compatible with the chosen output. If they are not, configure video encoding for your source and destination; the audio settings above do not determine the right video settings. Output options belong after the input they configure and before the output URL, as in the example.

An audio bitrate setting cannot prevent a source interruption, host failure, or network outage. YouTube advises leaving bandwidth headroom for the total stream bitrate and monitoring stream quality. Its streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth room; that is a recommendation, not a reliability guarantee. Test the full video-and-audio stream on the actual connection, watch Live Control Room’s stream health, and verify that audio remains present and correctly routed when sources change.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
YouTube’s encoding recommendations do not prescribe a universal FFmpeg process supervisor, restart strategy, or backup-input design. Those choices depend on your host, source, and continuity requirements. A long-running FFmpeg command still depends on the computer, source, and network running.
Troubleshooting common audio problems
- Audio bitrate is not what you intended: confirm
-b:a 128kappears after the input and before the output URL, and that-c:a aacselects the native AAC encoder used in this example. Inspect the encoded output. - No audio reaches YouTube: check that the input contains an audio stream, that the command selects it as expected, and that Live Control Room reports audio. Verify routing again after source changes.
- The video will not stream with
-c:v copy: the video may not be compatible with the RTMP/RTMPS output path. Copying is conditional; configure video encoding for the input and destination rather than changing the audio bitrate to solve a video incompatibility. - The stream health is poor or the feed interrupts: check the connection against the total audio and video bitrate, leave bandwidth headroom, and investigate source, host, and network continuity. Changing audio bitrate alone does not address every stream interruption.
- A different AAC encoder rejects an option: encoder behavior is implementation-specific. Check the installed FFmpeg encoders and consult the documentation for the encoder you selected; this example assumes the native
aacencoder, not an optional external encoder.
