Short answer: YouTube’s and OBS’s published guidance does not document a supported way to feed a YouTube playlist URL into an encoder as the source of a live stream. For a do-it-yourself setup, use local audio and video files you have permission to broadcast, loop them in OBS with its VLC Video source, and send that encoder feed to YouTube Live. A public playlist being watchable does not mean you can rebroadcast it.
Can a YouTube playlist URL be the source?
Do not treat a playlist URL as a supported encoder input. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe sending a live feed from an encoder using a server URL and stream key; OBS documents looping media files through a VLC playlist source. Neither reviewed guide documents taking a public YouTube playlist URL and rebroadcasting its videos as your live source.

That distinction matters for both operation and rights. A playlist of local files gives you control over the media being played, but it does not grant permission to broadcast the recordings, performances, or artwork. If you want to use recordings found on YouTube, confirm permission with the relevant rights holders and do not assume the playlist’s public availability permits a live rebroadcast.

Check channel eligibility and rights before setup
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The page also states that streamers must be at least 16 years old. Review YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance before planning the broadcast; restrictions and eligibility are channel-specific.

Clear every recording and visual
You are responsible for having the rights needed for the live content, including music licensing rights. Check the recording, composition, performance, and any artwork or other visuals you include. Rights to listen to or upload a track do not necessarily include the rights to broadcast it live or leave the resulting archive available. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the live-content provider, and its guidance on live-stream restrictions explains that copyright restrictions can affect active streams.
For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist. It is a checklist, not a substitute for permission from rights holders or legal advice.

Set up a local bhajan playlist in OBS
This workflow uses authorized media files on a computer, rather than a YouTube playlist URL. You need OBS, VLC installed separately, the media files you have permission to broadcast, a stable internet connection, and access to your YouTube channel’s Live Control Room. Keep the computer and network available while you stream.

Put the authorized recordings and any visuals you intend to show in an accessible folder. Make a playback list from those local files in the order you want. Check the full sequence before going live so that transitions, audio levels, and visuals are suitable for continuous playback.
- Install VLC and OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed separately. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide for supported media-source behavior.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, add the local media files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to return to the start after the last item. The VLC Video source is distinct from OBS’s standard Media Source. Confirm the playlist plays through as expected.
- Configure the live output. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: use the key for the intended broadcast and do not share it publicly.
- Check the preview, then start. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the picture and listen to the audio in the preview; then start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide for its current workflow and stream settings.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep OBS, the computer, and the internet connection running. Watch and listen for playback stopping, audio problems, dropped connections, or other interruptions. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality; OBS warns that meeting minimum system requirements does not guarantee that a particular system can encode reliably.
Plan for quality, runtime, and archiving
The encoder’s resolution and frame rate should be within what your computer and connection can sustain. OBS’s stated minimum system requirements are not a promise that a given machine can encode a particular scene or stream reliably; encoding load varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance is the place to check current platform options: Manage live stream settings.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an operational limit, not a promise that a longer broadcast will be archived. If an archive matters, plan the broadcast duration accordingly and check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before scheduling: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

The preview appears, but the live broadcast has not started
Receiving the encoder feed is not the same as starting the public broadcast. Check the preview and then start the stream in Live Control Room.
Playback or the connection interrupts
Confirm the local files still play, OBS remains open, the computer has not slept or shut down, and the network connection is available. Monitor the YouTube preview and broadcast rather than assuming that minimum hardware requirements ensure uninterrupted encoding.
YouTube restricts or interrupts the stream
Check Live Control Room for notices and review YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance. A restriction can be related to content or channel eligibility; changing encoder settings does not resolve a rights issue. Confirm that you have broadcast rights for every recording and visual.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded bhajan recording or playlist to keep playing without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud, not your laptop or OBS computer.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; the free day is one per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. For India, UPI and cards are available; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo pricing for the available billing periods. To try the cloud workflow, start your free first day with StreamNeo.
