For creators, VOD is a way to make prerecorded content available on a viewer’s schedule; it is not a specific platform, delivery technology, or payment model.
What VOD means—and what it does not mean
The defining feature of VOD is viewer choice about when to watch. A video can be available on demand through an internet service, cable system, or another distribution network. It does not have to be delivered using one particular technology.

VOD is often delivered through streaming, but the terms are not interchangeable. Streaming describes how video is delivered or played; VOD describes that viewers can select content for viewing at a time they choose. A platform may also offer live streams alongside its on-demand library.
VOD, OTT, and CTV are different terms
- VOD describes access to video on a viewer’s schedule.
- OTT describes audiovisual content delivered over the internet rather than through a traditional cable or satellite distribution system. OTT is one way to deliver VOD, but VOD can also be distributed through other networks.
- CTV means a connected-TV screen or a device connected to a television for internet video. It describes the viewing device, not how the service is funded.
One service can therefore be all three in different senses: an OTT service can offer VOD that a viewer watches on a CTV.

VOD versus live streaming and scheduled channels
VOD and live streaming describe different viewing modes. VOD is generally prerecorded and edited before a viewer selects it. Live streaming delivers video in real time, such as an event or broadcast. A creator can offer a live event and later make its recording available as VOD.
A FAST channel is different again. FAST means free ad-supported streaming television: it presents scheduled, linear programming that viewers watch as a channel, rather than choosing each item from an on-demand library. FAST and AVOD can both be ad-supported, but only AVOD in the table below describes selecting individual on-demand content.

How creators can fund VOD
VOD describes access timing, not the business model. Services may use one model or combine several. The exact meaning of labels such as PVOD can vary by provider, so explain the actual price and access terms when describing a particular offer.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

|---|---|---|
| AVOD | Advertising | Selects on-demand content; ads may appear. Some services combine a subscription with advertising. |
| SVOD | Recurring subscription | Gets access under subscription terms; ads may or may not be included. |
| TVOD | Individual transaction | Pays to rent or purchase a particular title. |
| PVOD | Premium price or special-access charge | Pays for a premium-priced title or special access; providers do not use the term identically. |
| FAST | Advertising | Watches a scheduled linear channel instead of selecting each item on demand. |
To compare services for your audience, check the payment mechanism, whether viewing is on demand or scheduled, whether ads appear, and the provider’s access rules. There is no universally best model established by these definitions: the right fit depends on your content, audience, and how you want access to work.

How a VOD video reaches a viewer
At platform scale, a VOD service may ingest a high-quality source file, store it, transcode it into formats suited to different devices and connections, distribute it through a content delivery network (CDN), and play it in an app. These are backend delivery functions; creators who publish through a hosted platform generally do not need to operate that infrastructure themselves.
For a creator, the practical distinction is that publishing a recording into an on-demand library lets viewers select it later. Running that same recording as a real-time or continuously scheduled broadcast is a different format, even if the source video is prerecorded.

How YouTube monetization relates to VOD
YouTube is one example of a platform-specific arrangement, not a universal rule for VOD. According to YouTube Help, eligible YouTube Partner Program creators can earn from ads shown before, during, after, or around Watch Page videos, and from YouTube Premium subscribers watching on the Watch Page. Earning on long-form or live Watch Page videos requires accepting the Watch Page Monetization Module; ad suitability and platform review also apply.
YouTube describes fan-funding features—including memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks—separately under its Commerce Product Module. Eligibility, terms, and available features depend on YouTube’s rules. Other platforms may have different monetization systems, and a VOD label by itself does not guarantee that a creator can earn from a video.

When an always-on YouTube broadcast is a separate use case
If your goal is an on-demand library, publish videos in a format viewers can select when they choose. If instead you want an uploaded recording or playlist to run continuously as a YouTube live stream, that is a separate broadcast format—not VOD—even though the source video is prerecorded. StreamNeo is a cloud service for that specific YouTube use: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live while it loops from the cloud. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. To try it, start at StreamNeo’s free first-day trial.
