To add a folder to PATH in Windows 11, open Advanced system settings, choose Environment Variables…, and edit Path. Pick User variables if the change is only for your account, or System variables if every user on the computer needs it; system changes require administrator privileges. Add the folder as its own entry, keep the existing entries, and then open a new terminal to test the result.
Choose the right scope before you edit
Windows keeps two sets of environment variables. The one you edit determines who can find the program you are adding.

| Scope | Applies to | Permission needed to edit | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| User variables | The signed-in account only | Your normal user account | A tool you installed for yourself, or a personal scripts folder |
| System variables | Every user of the computer | Administrator privileges | Software installed for all accounts, or a machine-wide tools folder |
If you are unsure, start with User variables. It avoids administrator prompts and only affects your account. Use System variables when the command must work for other accounts, services, or a shared machine.

Steps to add or edit a PATH entry
-
Open Advanced system settings. Microsoft’s documented route is Control Panel → System → Advanced system settings. In Windows 11, you can also press Start, type View advanced system settings, and open the result. The search phrase is a navigation shortcut; menu labels can vary slightly with Windows build and language.

Confirm every dialog. Select OK in the edit window, then OK in Environment Variables, then OK in System Properties.
-
Start a new session. Open a new Command Prompt, PowerShell window, or application that needs the change. Windows writes the value to the Registry, so it persists across sessions and restarts.
Use the folder, not the executable file itself. A PATH entry such as C:Toolsmytool.exe will not be found by name; the entry should be C:Tools.

Why an open terminal may not see the change
A process receives its environment from the process that started it. Microsoft’s Win32 documentation states: “By default, a child process inherits the environment variables of its parent process.” A command window that was already open before you edited PATH keeps the values it inherited at launch. Its environment does not update in place, so the change appears only in windows and applications started after the edit.

The stored value and the running session are separate. The Registry holds the persistent setting; each live process holds a copy it received earlier.

For a functional test, open a new window in a different folder, type the program name, and press Enter. If it runs, the entry works. If Windows reports that the command is not recognized, check these causes:
- The entry points to the executable’s file instead of its containing folder.
- The path has a typo, a missing backslash, or stray quotation marks.
- You edited User variables but the program needs System variables, or the reverse.
- The terminal or application was opened before the change and has not been restarted.
These checks follow from how PATH is used to locate programs; they are not a Microsoft-prescribed diagnostic sequence.
Avoid setx for long PATH values
Commands can change variables, but they do not all behave the same way. set changes a variable only in the current command shell and its child processes; it does not rewrite the stored user or system value. setx writes to the Registry, but Microsoft’s setx documentation (last updated 2023) notes that changes apply to future command windows, not the current one.

The more important risk is length. The same documentation states that setx assignments longer than 1,024 characters are cropped, and the cropped value is applied. Because a long PATH can exceed that limit, setx PATH ... can silently lose entries. Microsoft’s Environment Variables documentation (updated 2025) gives a separate figure of 32,767 characters as the maximum size of a user-defined variable; that figure describes the general variable limit, not the setx command’s limit, and practical limits depend on the access method.
If you must use a command, check the full current value first with echo %PATH% or $env:Path, and avoid overwriting it. The System Properties dialog is the safer route for ordinary edits because it preserves the existing list while you add the new entry.
Optional: PowerToys Environment Variables
Microsoft PowerToys includes an Environment Variables utility that can edit variables and manage profiles. According to Microsoft, profile values take precedence over User and System values, and enabling Open as administrator allows management of System variables. You do not need PowerToys to complete the built-in method described above.
