On the iPad’s onscreen keyboard, double-tap the Shift key to turn on Caps Lock. That is the whole method for touch typing. If you use a physical keyboard connected to your iPad, the Caps Lock key on that keyboard works differently, and the sections below explain both cases.
Turn on Caps Lock with the onscreen keyboard
Apple’s iPad support guide for the onscreen keyboard gives the instruction directly: “Turn on Caps Lock: Double-tap the Shift key.” No accessory, setting, or app is required.

- Open any app with a text field, such as Notes, Safari’s address bar, or Messages, and tap the field so the onscreen keyboard appears.
- Locate the Shift key, the upward-arrow key at the lower left of the letter keys.
- Double-tap Shift quickly. The arrow changes to indicate that Caps Lock is active, and letters you type stay uppercase until you turn it off.
- To turn Caps Lock off, tap Shift once.
If a single tap on Shift only capitalizes the next letter, you have not yet triggered Caps Lock. Try the double-tap again with two quick taps rather than two separate, slow presses.

Using a physical keyboard?
When an external keyboard is paired with your iPad, the iPad uses that keyboard’s own Caps Lock key rather than the double-tap gesture. Apple’s guide on switching keyboards on iPad notes that Caps Lock can also be used to switch between Latin script and certain added Chinese, Korean, Japanese, or Hebrew keyboards. This is the most common reason Caps Lock seems to do something other than capitalize text.

If Caps Lock switches languages instead of capitalizing
To stop the key from changing keyboards:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Keyboard, then Hardware Keyboard.
- Turn off Switch Languages using Caps Lock.
After this change, the external keyboard’s Caps Lock key should behave as a standard capitals toggle.
Reassigning the Caps Lock key
If you want the key on an external keyboard to do something else entirely, Apple’s keyboard shortcuts guide for iPad describes the Modifier Keys menu:

- Go to Settings, then General, then Keyboard, then Hardware Keyboard.
- Tap Modifier Keys.
- Tap the key you want to change, then choose the action you want it to perform.
Reassigning a key changes its behavior on the external keyboard only. The onscreen keyboard still uses the double-tap Shift gesture.

- Onscreen keyboard: Double-tap Shift. Works on any iPad without extra hardware.
- External keyboard: Press the keyboard’s Caps Lock key. Useful for frequent all-caps typing, but it may switch languages if that option is enabled in Settings.
An iPad-compatible Bluetooth keyboard is an optional accessory if you want a dedicated physical Caps Lock key. You do not need one to use Caps Lock.
