On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, connect the controller to the console and open Xbox Accessories. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, configuration requires a compatible USB-C cable. The app’s assignment list is the authority for the commands available on your controller, firmware and platform.
What the Xbox Accessories app can change
The XBOX Nano Controller supports button mapping through Xbox Accessories on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11. You can create or edit a controller profile, choose a primary assignment for a button and, where the app exposes it, choose a shift-mode assignment. The Nano’s programmable Action Button can also be assigned through the same workflow.

Remapping is profile based rather than a permanent change to the game itself. A saved profile occupies one of three controller slots. After saving, you must activate the intended slot with the controller’s Profile button before starting or resuming a game. If a game appears unchanged, the first checks are whether the correct slot is active and whether the game supports the input you selected.

The exact commands shown can vary with the Xbox Accessories app, the Nano’s firmware and the platform on which the app is running. A command that is not listed for the connected controller cannot be selected from the app; update the app and controller firmware, then check the target platform before treating the omission as a hardware problem.

Compatibility and requirements
| Where you are configuring | Supported system | Connection requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox console | Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One | Connect and power on the Nano, then select it in Xbox Accessories. | The assignments available are determined by the app, firmware and console platform. |
| Windows PC | Windows 10 or Windows 11 | A compatible USB-C cable is required for Xbox Accessories configuration. | Wireless use and Windows configuration are separate concerns; keep the USB-C connection in place while editing. |
Before opening the app, have the following ready:
- The XBOX Nano Controller powered on.
- For Windows, a compatible USB-C cable that can carry data, not only provide power.
- The Xbox Accessories app installed and updated on the system you are using.
- The game or games in which you intend to use the profile, so you can test the finished mapping in the real environment.
Xbox Wire’s October 14, 2026 launch announcement describes the Nano as “a little over 5 inches in length and just 3.5 ounces.” It lists a $49.99 launch price. Those figures identify the launch product, not a guarantee of the current price or regional availability, and neither figure changes the configuration steps.
Configure the Nano step by step
1. Connect and power on the controller
- For an Xbox console, connect the controller to the Xbox and turn it on.
- For Windows 10 or Windows 11, connect the Nano with a compatible USB-C cable, then power it on. If Windows charges the controller but Xbox Accessories does not detect it, try another known-good data-capable cable and another USB port.
Wait until the controller appears as a connected device before attempting to edit a profile. Editing a disconnected device can leave you looking at a different controller or an unavailable configuration screen.
2. Open Xbox Accessories and select the Nano
Launch Xbox Accessories and select the connected XBOX Nano Controller from the device list. Confirm that the selected device is the Nano before changing any assignment, particularly if more than one controller is connected.

Choose Configure. This is the profile-editing area where Xbox Accessories presents the buttons and assignments exposed by the connected Nano. If Configure is unavailable, return to the connection checks and firmware/app checks in the troubleshooting section below rather than trying to edit a different device.
4. Create a profile or edit an existing one
Choose to create a new profile when you want a separate layout, or select an existing profile when you want to revise one already stored on the controller. Give each profile a purpose you can recognize later, such as a game name or a control style, if the app offers a naming field.

A new profile is useful when you want to preserve the factory arrangement while experimenting. Editing an existing profile is faster when you already know which button needs to change, but it also changes that saved layout for every game that uses the slot.
5. Select a button and choose its assignment
In the on-screen controller layout, select the button you want to change. Choose its primary usage from the assignments offered by Xbox Accessories. If the app exposes a shift-mode assignment for that control, choose the shift usage separately. The app’s list, not a generic Xbox button chart, determines which options are valid for the Nano on your current platform and firmware.
Use the same process for the programmable Action Button. Xbox Wire confirms that the Action Button is programmable, but the commands displayed for it depend on the app, firmware and platform. Select the Action Button in the layout, choose one of the listed assignments and leave it unchanged if the command you need is not present; do not assume that an assignment available on another Xbox controller is available on the Nano.
6. Save the configuration to a slot
Save the profile in Xbox Accessories, then assign it to Slot 1, Slot 2 or Slot 3. Saving the edits and assigning the profile to a slot are separate decisions: a profile that is saved but not placed in the slot you activate will not be the layout used in your game.
Keep one slot unchanged as a baseline if you are testing several layouts. Use the remaining slots for game-specific or accessibility-focused arrangements so you can switch without rebuilding the profile.

7. Activate the slot on the controller
Press the Nano’s Profile button to select the slot you just saved. The profile must be active before you launch or resume the game. If you switch games, press Profile again whenever you need a different slot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Test in Xbox Accessories and in the game
In Xbox Accessories, select the lower-right Beaker icon to open the controller test view. Press each remapped control and confirm that the app reports the assigned input. Test the Action Button separately if you changed it, and check both its normal and shift-mode behavior when a shift assignment is available.
After the app test passes, test the same controls in the target game. A controller can emit the assignment correctly while a particular game ignores it, interprets it differently or does not accept that category of input.
How profiles, primary assignments and shift mode work
Primary assignment
The primary assignment is the ordinary action emitted when you press the mapped button. It is the setting most players mean when they ask to swap or remap a button. Select the physical control in the app, choose the desired primary usage and save it to the active profile slot.
Shift-mode assignment
Some controls expose an additional shift-mode usage. When available, the same physical button can provide a different command while the controller’s shift behavior is engaged. Because shift-mode availability is not identical across every controller, firmware and platform, use only the shift choices shown for the connected Nano. If no shift field appears, that profile has no shift assignment to configure.

The programmable Action Button
The Action Button is a dedicated Nano control that can be assigned in Xbox Accessories. Its programmability does not mean that every possible keyboard, system or game command is available. The app displays the authoritative list for the current setup; select a listed command, save the profile, activate its slot and test it with the Beaker tool before relying on it in a game.
Profile slots are controller state
Think of Slots 1–3 as three stored layouts on the controller. Editing a profile changes the layout saved to its slot; pressing Profile chooses which stored layout is currently active. The game does not automatically choose a slot based on its title, so make slot selection part of your pre-game routine.

|---|---|---|
| Open Xbox Accessories | Select the connected Nano on the Xbox. | Select the Nano after connecting it by compatible USB-C cable. |
| Configure button mappings | Use Configure, choose the button and assignments shown, then save. | Use the same Configure workflow; keep the USB-C cable connected during editing. |
| Save and activate | Save to Slot 1, 2 or 3, then press Profile on the controller. | Save to Slot 1, 2 or 3, then press Profile on the controller before playing. |
| Verify output | Use the Beaker test, then test in the console game. | Use the Beaker test, then test in the Windows game. |
| Input compatibility | Game support still determines whether an assignment has an effect. | Game support still determines whether an assignment has an effect; keyboard-input mappings are especially game dependent. |
The main procedural difference is the Windows cable requirement. The profile concepts, slot numbers, Profile button and Beaker verification step remain the same.
Keyboard input and game support
Xbox Wire notes that keyboard-input mapping is game dependent. A game may support keyboard input fully, partially or not at all. Therefore, a keyboard command appearing in Xbox Accessories does not guarantee that every game will respond to it.
- Full support: the game recognizes the assigned keyboard input as intended.
- Partial support: some menus, modes or gameplay actions respond while others do not.
- No support: the game ignores the input even though the controller and app test show that it is being emitted.
When a keyboard assignment fails only in one game, keep the profile and test a standard controller assignment. If the standard assignment works but the keyboard input does not, the likely constraint is the game’s input handling rather than the Nano’s physical button or saved profile.

What standard Xbox remapping tells you—and what it does not
Xbox Wire’s 2015 explanation of standard-controller remapping describes button swaps: when one standard button is remapped, the corresponding original mapping is swapped. It also says that a mapping does not automatically transfer to another console. Use that information as general Xbox remapping context, not as a promise that every Nano assignment behaves identically.
For the Nano, the current Xbox Accessories screen is the final authority. Verify the result with the Beaker test and in the target game after every significant change. If the app presents a different swap behavior, profile arrangement or assignment list, follow the current Nano-specific interface rather than relying on an older standard-controller description.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Nano does not appear in Xbox Accessories
- Confirm that the controller is powered on.
- On Windows, reconnect it with a compatible USB-C data cable. A cable that only supplies power will not provide the required configuration connection.
- Disconnect other controllers temporarily so you can identify the Nano unambiguously.
- Update Xbox Accessories and the controller firmware using the update controls the app presents.
- Confirm that you are using Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 or Windows 11, the platforms listed for Nano button mapping.
Configure is missing or the profile screen is incomplete
Make sure the Nano—not another connected device—is selected. Then reconnect it, restart Xbox Accessories and check for app or firmware updates. If a particular control or field is absent after updating, it may simply not be exposed for the Nano on that platform. The app’s visible controls are more reliable than instructions written for a different controller.
The Action Button has no command you need
The Action Button is programmable, but its available assignments are limited to the choices shown by the app for the current firmware and platform. Update the app and controller, reconnect and check again. If the desired command still does not appear, it is not available through Xbox Accessories in that configuration; choose another listed assignment or use an in-game control option if the game provides one.
The mapping saved, but the game still uses the old controls
- Return to Xbox Accessories and confirm the profile contains the intended assignment.
- Confirm that the profile was saved to the slot you think you used.
- Press the controller’s Profile button and select that slot again.
- Use the Beaker icon to verify the emitted input.
- Close and relaunch or resume the game only after the correct slot is active.
If the Beaker test shows the new input but the game does not respond, check the game’s support for that input type, especially if the assignment is a keyboard command.
The Beaker test does not show the assigned input
The profile may not have been saved, the wrong slot may be active or the edit may have been made on a different connected controller. Reopen Configure, inspect the assignment, save it again to a known slot and press Profile to activate that slot. If the assignment is still absent, update the app and firmware and repeat the test.
The profile works on one console but not another
Xbox Wire’s general remapping guidance says mappings do not automatically transfer to another console. Treat a profile as local controller or console state: verify the mapping and active slot on the system where you intend to play. Recheck the Nano in Xbox Accessories instead of assuming that a slot selected elsewhere has carried over.

A reliable profile routine for everyday use
- Keep one slot as an untouched baseline.
- Use a second slot for a game-specific layout and a third for an alternate control style or accessibility arrangement.
- After every edit, save the profile before leaving Configure.
- Write down which purpose belongs to Slot 1, Slot 2 and Slot 3, since the controller uses slot numbers rather than automatically selecting by game.
- Press Profile before launching or resuming a game.
- Run the Beaker test after firmware updates or major profile edits.
- Perform one final test inside the actual game, because game support can differ from the app’s test screen.
This routine separates three failure points that are often confused: the assignment may be wrong, the profile may be saved to a different slot, or the game may not support the emitted input. Checking them in that order makes diagnosis faster without discarding a working profile.
