Arma Reforger exposes two server-level AI controls in the JSON configuration’s operating block: set disableAI to true to remove server AI entirely, or use aiLimit to cap the number of AI entities. If you also supply the -aiLimit startup parameter, that parameter takes precedence over the JSON value. The keys are case-sensitive, and the correct behavior for zero and negative limits differs between the wiki’s JSON and startup-parameter descriptions, so test those values on the exact server build you run.

| No AI anywhere on the server | "disableAI": true |
The server skips initializing and updating the AI world and its components. | The Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki describes this as a Boolean whose default is false. |
| Keep AI but impose a ceiling | "aiLimit": number |
No system can spawn additional AI after the ceiling is reached. | The JSON default is -1, described as no limit. A startup -aiLimit value overrides JSON. |
| Override a file value for one launch or a hosting panel | -aiLimit number |
Uses the startup value instead of the JSON value. | Use the exact parameter spelling documented for your server version. |
Disabling AI is a global switch. Limiting AI is a budget: AI remains available until the configured ceiling is reached, so missions that depend on AI can still function but may play differently once the cap is exhausted.
What the two JSON keys actually do
disableAI: remove AI processing
Inside the operating object, disableAI accepts a Boolean. With true, the server does not initialize or update the AI world and its components. A hosting guide independently describes the same outcome: no AI characters spawn in any scenario, including Conflict. Leave it at false when you want normal AI behavior.

The key is case-sensitive. disableai, DisableAI, and similar spellings are different names and should not be substituted for disableAI. The wiki excerpt does not attach a specific introduction version to this option, so confirm that the key exists in the documentation for your executable branch before deploying it to a production server.
aiLimit: cap AI rather than remove it
aiLimit is also under operating. It sets the top limit of AI entities; once the ceiling is reached, no system can spawn more AI. The Server Config reference lists -1 as the default and explains that this means no limit. The wiki marks the option as added in version 0.9.8.64, so an older executable may not understand it.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A cap is not a promise that the server will maintain that exact number. A scenario can create fewer AI, and mission logic may remove entities. The value is a maximum, not a target or a guaranteed population. Because limiting AI can save server performance but can also break the intended experience, treat the number as a gameplay and capacity decision rather than a universal optimization.
Before editing the server
Confirm the executable branch
Guides in circulation target both the 1.6.x stable line and 1.7 builds. Record the branch and full build number shown by your host or executable, then use the matching Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki Server Config and Startup Parameters references. The documented addition point for aiLimit is 0.9.8.64; the absence of a version note for disableAI is not proof that every historical build supports it.
Find the file the server actually loads
The executable reads the JSON file supplied through the -config startup parameter. A panel may already add this parameter for you. If you edit a different JSON file from the one named by -config, nothing changes even when the syntax is perfect. Check the launch command or panel’s startup-parameter field before making changes.

Make a reversible copy
Stop the server, copy the active JSON file, and keep the original until you have started a test session successfully. Preserve any unrelated settings. JSON is strict: use double quotes around keys and string values, lowercase JSON literals such as true and false, and no trailing comma after the final member of an object.
Disable all AI with disableAI
- Stop the Arma Reforger dedicated server so it cannot overwrite or rewrite the file while you edit.
- Open the file referenced by the server’s
-configparameter. - Locate the top-level
operatingobject. If it already exists, add or change the Boolean member without deleting the other operating settings. - Set the member exactly as shown:
"operating": {
"disableAI": true
}
The snippet is an object fragment. In a complete file, it must be inside the outer JSON object and separated from neighboring members with commas where required. Do not put disableAI in a scenario section or under a differently named object.
- Save the file as valid UTF-8 JSON and restart the server using the same
-configpath. - Join a controlled scenario and check the result against the mission’s normal AI behavior. If AI still appears, first verify that the running process loaded the file you edited and that the key’s capitalization matches exactly.
When disableAI is true, changing aiLimit does not restore AI: the disable switch removes AI initialization and updates altogether. Set disableAI back to false before evaluating an AI cap.
Limit AI while keeping it enabled
- Stop the server and open the active file identified by
-config. - Under
operating, setdisableAItofalseor remove that override if your build uses the documented default. - Add an integer ceiling, for example:
"operating": {
"disableAI": false,
"aiLimit": 32
}
- Save the JSON, restart the server, and test the mission that matters to your community. Observe whether AI can spawn initially and whether additional spawns stop once the configured ceiling is reached.
- If your launch command includes
-aiLimit, decide whether that override is intentional. It wins over the JSON number, so editing the file alone will not change the effective cap.
The value 32 is an example of the documented syntax, not a recommended universal setting. A cap that works for one scenario, player count, or server machine can make another scenario feel empty or prevent its objectives from working.

| Where the value is supplied | Documented behavior | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
JSON aiLimit |
The Server Config description says a negative value is ignored; the same reference lists -1 as the default meaning no limit. |
Do not assume every negative value disables AI. Treat negative JSON values as version-sensitive and verify the effective behavior. |
Startup -aiLimit |
The Startup Parameters description says a value less than or equal to zero disables any possible AI. | Use only after testing the exact executable and panel. Startup semantics may not match JSON semantics. |
Because the references do not reconcile the difference, do not deploy 0 or a negative number as a production “disable” switch without a test. The unambiguous control for a complete shutdown is disableAI: true. For a limited-AI configuration, use a positive integer and confirm the observed ceiling. If you need unlimited AI, the JSON reference’s documented default is -1, but verify that the loaded build treats it that way rather than relying on a value copied from another launch method.
Startup parameters and precedence
Point the server at the intended file
Add the -config startup parameter followed by the path to your JSON file in the executable’s launch command or hosting panel. The exact path syntax depends on the operating system and host; the important distinction is that the server must be told which file to load. A correctly edited file that is not named by -config has no effect.
Override the JSON cap deliberately
The -aiLimit startup parameter takes precedence over the JSON aiLimit value. For example, a file containing "aiLimit": 32 will not produce an effective limit of 32 if the launch configuration supplies -aiLimit 50. Treat the startup command as the final authority when troubleshooting a mismatch.
Keep one source of truth where possible. If a panel generates startup parameters, document the panel value next to the JSON value or remove the duplicate so administrators do not edit one setting while the other silently wins.

- Write down the server branch and build, the path supplied to
-config, the JSON values, and any-aiLimitargument. - Validate the JSON structure before launching. A missing brace, unquoted key, trailing comma, or misspelled Boolean can prevent the intended setting from loading.
- Start a test instance or a maintenance window rather than changing a populated public session first.
- For a disable test, use a scenario that normally creates AI and confirm that AI does not initialize or spawn. Test more than one scenario if your community rotates missions.
- For a cap test, begin below the expected ceiling, trigger the mission’s normal spawn events, and record whether further AI creation stops at the configured positive integer.
- Change only one variable at a time. Test
disableAI, a positiveaiLimit, and startup overrides separately so an old command-line value does not mask a file change. - Restore the backup if the server fails to start or the mission becomes unplayable, then reintroduce the change with corrected syntax.
There is no published official table that maps an AI count to a fixed frame rate or hardware requirement. Verification in your actual mission and player load is therefore more reliable than copying a number from another server.

Choosing a cap for player count
Community hosting guidance commonly suggests these starting ranges:
| Player capacity | Suggested AI range | Status of the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 16 players | 30–50 AI | Community recommendation, not an official Bohemia Interactive limit or benchmark. |
| 32 players | 50–80 AI | Community recommendation, not an official Bohemia Interactive limit or benchmark. |
| 64 players | 80–100 AI | Community recommendation, not an official Bohemia Interactive limit or benchmark. |
Use these ranges only as test points. Scenario scripts, AI behavior, terrain, mod content, connection quality, and server hardware can make the same count feel different. Start at the lower end, measure the mission’s behavior, and raise the ceiling only when the added AI improves the experience without causing unacceptable simulation or networking problems.

Why a limit can help
The Startup Parameters guidance warns that limiting AI may save performance. Fewer active AI entities can reduce the amount of simulation work the server must perform, which is why hosting guides present aiLimit primarily as a tuning control. The size of any improvement depends on what the mission is doing and how many AI are active; no official universal percentage or frame-time reduction is published.

A cap can break the intended experience. A mission may rely on reinforcements, ambient units, garrison replacements, or scripted waves. Once the ceiling is reached, no system can spawn more AI, so an objective may become quiet, a wave may be incomplete, or a scenario may fail to replenish defenders. Test the actual missions your players use instead of judging the setting from an empty server.
Disable versus cap
- Choose
disableAI: truefor a deliberately player-only environment, troubleshooting sessions, or a scenario designed without AI. - Choose a positive
aiLimitwhen AI is part of the design but uncontrolled growth threatens server capacity. - Leave the documented unlimited JSON default only when your hardware and mission testing show that unrestricted spawning is acceptable.
AI difficulty is a separate question
No server-config key for AI difficulty was confirmed in the available Bohemia Interactive references. One hosting guide recommends creating or editing /profile/settings/ai.json, but that instruction lacks an official reference and should be treated as unverified rather than copied into a production setup.
Best Value
A Steam discussion says difficulty is changed through a custom mission or scenario made in the editor. That is community guidance, not a confirmed dedicated-server JSON option. If your goal is smarter or weaker AI rather than fewer AI, look for a scenario-level solution supported by the editor and your mission framework; do not assume that changing aiLimit changes accuracy, aggression, or skill.
Case sensitivity and neighboring keys
Every JSON key is case-sensitive. Use the exact spellings disableAI and aiLimit, including the capital “AI” and the capital “L” in aiLimit. Copying a similarly named field from an old guide can produce a setting the server ignores.
Documentation also differs on unrelated operating fields: one source uses lobbyPlayerSynchronise, while another lists lobbyPlayerSync. The wiki’s example operating block includes lobbyPlayerSynchronise, joinQueue, and disableNavmeshStreaming, but its example does not show disableAI or aiLimit. An example’s omission is not evidence that the AI keys are invalid. Preserve the names already used by the reference for your branch and avoid replacing an entire operating block just to add one AI setting.
Troubleshooting common failures
AI still spawns after setting disableAI
- Check that the value is the JSON Boolean
true, not the quoted string"true". - Confirm the key is inside
operatingand spelleddisableAI. - Verify that the running process uses the file named by
-config. - Confirm you restarted the server after saving.
- Check the executable branch; the excerpted documentation does not provide a universal version guarantee for this key.
The configured cap appears to be ignored
- Search the launch command and hosting panel for
-aiLimit. Its value overrides JSON. - Check for a typo or wrong capitalization in
aiLimit. - Make sure another administrator did not edit a second config file.
- Use a positive integer for a straightforward cap while testing; zero and negative semantics are the documented conflict.
- Remember that a cap is a maximum, so a mission producing fewer AI is not evidence that the setting failed.
The server or mission becomes unstable
- Restore the backed-up JSON and restart to establish a known-good baseline.
- Reapply one change at a time, beginning with a conservative positive cap.
- Test the mission’s reinforcement and respawn objectives, not just its opening scene.
- If the problem appears only with a startup override, remove the override and compare it with the JSON-only launch.
Practical configuration recipes
Player-only server
"operating": {
"disableAI": true
}
This is the clearest documented configuration for eliminating AI. Keep any existing operating members and ensure the server loads this file through -config.
AI-enabled server with a 32-entity ceiling
"operating": {
"disableAI": false,
"aiLimit": 32
}
This leaves AI enabled and prevents further spawning after the ceiling is reached, subject to any -aiLimit startup override.
Testing an override without rewriting the file
Keep the JSON cap unchanged and add -aiLimit with the test value to the launch configuration. Because the startup parameter wins, this lets an administrator compare caps temporarily. Remove the argument after testing if the JSON file is meant to remain authoritative.
