To connect a Minecraft plugin to MySQL, create a database and dedicated user, change the plugin’s storage mode to MySQL, enter the database host, port, name and credentials in the correct configuration file, restart the server, and confirm the connection in the console. The exact setting names and file locations differ between plugins, so treat the examples below as a pattern and follow the target plugin’s current documentation for its keys.

What using MySQL changes
Many Paper and Spigot plugins can store data in a local flat file, SQLite database or MySQL-compatible server. MySQL moves that data into a separate database service instead of keeping it only in the plugin folder. This is especially useful when several Minecraft servers need to read and write the same player data through a BungeeCord or Velocity network. A single server may be perfectly adequate with the plugin’s default flat-file option, so switching databases is an operational choice rather than a requirement for every installation.

MySQL is not a universal setting that can be pasted into every plugin. One plugin may call the option storage-method; another may use storage, a driver selector, or a completely separate configuration file. A correct database and incorrect key name still produce a failed connection or leave the plugin using its old storage method.
Prepare the server and database first
Check the server software and plugin version
These instructions apply to plugins loaded by Paper or Spigot. Confirm that the plugin version supports MySQL or MariaDB before changing anything. Keep a copy of the plugin’s current data directory and configuration file so you can restore the previous state if the migration fails.

- Stop the server before making structural configuration changes, unless the plugin’s documentation explicitly supports a live reload.
- Back up the entire plugin folder, including its existing YAML files and data files.
- Record whether the plugin currently uses flat files, SQLite or another storage type; this helps you identify the correct migration or import procedure.
- Have database host, port, database name, username and password ready before editing the YAML file.
Create a database and a dedicated user
Most game-server control panels can create a database and user together. Use that panel workflow when it is available, then copy the generated host, port, database name, username and password exactly. Do not use the database administrator account for a plugin.
On a VPS where you administer MySQL yourself, the following is an illustrative setup. Replace the example names and password with values you create; the exact account-host syntax depends on whether the Minecraft server and database run on the same machine.

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;A plugin account normally needs access only to its own schema. If the plugin’s documentation lists narrower permissions, use those instead. When the database is on another host, the account’s allowed host and the database firewall must permit the Minecraft server’s address; do not expose MySQL broadly just to make a connection work.

Know which connection values you are entering
- Host: the database server address. For a database on the same machine, this is often
127.0.0.1; a hosting panel may provide a different hostname. - Port: the port on which the database listens. MySQL installations commonly use 3306, but use the value supplied by your host.
- Database: the schema created for this plugin or group of plugins.
- Username: the dedicated account granted access to that schema.
- Password: the exact password for that account, including punctuation and letter case.
Some plugins ask for host and port separately. Others expect them together in one address field. Do not assume that a field named address accepts only a hostname: the plugin’s configuration reference determines the required format.
Find the plugin’s actual configuration file
The usual location
After the plugin has started once, look in plugins/<PluginName>/. The main file is often config.yml. Open it with a text editor that preserves spaces and UTF-8 text. YAML is indentation-sensitive: use spaces, not tabs, and keep child keys aligned with the existing file.
Separate database files are common
Do not edit a guessed filename if the plugin documents another one. MySqlPlayerBridge, for example, keeps its database settings in plugins/MySqlPlayerBridge/mysql.yml rather than the usual config.yml. PlayerPoints publishes a plugin-specific configuration reference on dev.bukkit.org; use that page to identify its current keys. The Spigot wiki also has a general “Connecting to databases – MySQL” page, but the plugin’s own documentation takes priority when the formats differ.

Examples of plugin-specific differences

Switch the storage mode to MySQL
Find the setting that currently selects flat-file, YAML or SQLite storage. Change only that value and leave unrelated options untouched. A generic configuration may look like this:

password: "your_db_password"This block is illustrative, not a universal schema. If your plugin uses storage: MySQL, separate host and port keys, or a driver field, preserve those names and capitalization exactly. Some plugins distinguish between mysql, MySQL and MariaDB; enter the value shown in that plugin’s documentation.
Quote values that contain punctuation
Quote the complete host-and-port value, as in "127.0.0.1:3306", when the plugin expects a combined address. Quote the password as well. Characters such as #, :, braces and leading punctuation can be interpreted by YAML instead of being treated as password text. Quoting does not change the password sent to MySQL; it prevents the YAML parser from changing or truncating it.

Keep indentation consistent and do not add tabs. A syntactically valid YAML file can still be semantically wrong if the database block is nested under the wrong parent key. Compare your edited section with the plugin’s freshly generated default file if you are unsure where it belongs.

- Save the edited file and ensure the filename and extension have not changed.
- Start or restart the Minecraft server. A full restart is safer than relying on a plugin reload command because database pools and drivers are often initialized only during startup.
- Watch the console during the plugin’s startup phase. A successful connection message should appear before the plugin enables its commands or listeners.
- Run a harmless plugin command or perform a small data change, such as creating a test record, then restart once more to confirm the data persists.
- Stop and investigate if the console reports a connection, authentication, driver or schema error. Do not repeatedly restart while the same credentials are wrong.
A successful startup message proves that the plugin reached the database, but it does not prove that an old flat-file dataset was imported. Migration is plugin-specific; check whether the documentation provides an import command or requires a one-time conversion.

“Access denied” or authentication failure
- Re-enter the username and password from the database panel or SQL account.
- Check that the account is permitted from the Minecraft server’s host. An account created for
localhostmay not authenticate when the plugin connects from another machine. - Confirm that the plugin is connecting to the intended database host and not an old value left in another configuration file.
- Check for YAML parsing of special password characters; quote the password and restart.
“Connection refused” or timeout
- Verify the hostname and port, including whether the plugin expects
host:portin one field or two separate fields. - Confirm that MySQL or MariaDB is running and listening on that port.
- For a remote database, check the server firewall, database bind address and hosting-panel allowlist.
- Do not substitute
localhostfor a panel-provided database hostname without checking the provider’s instructions.
“Unknown database”
The schema name in the plugin file does not exactly match the one created in MySQL. Database names can differ by spelling, punctuation and letter case depending on the operating system. Copy the name from the database server or panel rather than typing it from memory.
YAML parser errors or the plugin disables itself
- Restore the backup and reapply the change one line at a time.
- Replace tabs with spaces and check that every quote is closed.
- Look for an unquoted colon, hash character or password containing a line break.
- Compare indentation with the generated default file; a database block at the wrong level may be ignored even when YAML parses.
Driver, table or schema errors
A plugin may require a particular JDBC driver label, such as LiteBans’ MariaDB setting, even when the server is described generally as MySQL. Use the exact driver option documented by that plugin. If the connection succeeds but tables are missing, check whether the plugin is supposed to create its schema automatically, whether the database user has permission to create tables, and whether an import or migration step is required.
The plugin connects but data does not appear on another server
Every server in a BungeeCord or Velocity network must point to the same intended database and compatible plugin schema. Check each server’s plugin file separately; copying a configuration can accidentally copy the wrong database name or credentials. Also verify that the plugin is designed to share data across servers rather than maintaining server-local state.

Shared storage is most valuable when multiple Minecraft servers need common bans, points, permissions or player records. Configure the same database details on each participating server only when the plugin supports that topology. Keep server-specific settings, such as world names or local message options, separate from the shared database block.
Plan changes in a controlled order: back up the database, stop or drain the affected servers, apply the plugin’s documented schema or migration, then bring servers back online while watching each console. Running different plugin versions against one schema can produce incompatible migrations, so keep versions aligned unless the plugin explicitly supports mixed versions.
Security and maintenance practices
- Use one database user per plugin or tightly related plugin group instead of sharing an administrator login.
- Give the account access only to the schema it needs, and rotate the password if it has been exposed in a ticket, screenshot or log.
- Restrict remote database access to the Minecraft server addresses through the host firewall or panel controls.
- Keep configuration backups separate from public repositories and do not paste passwords into support requests.
- Schedule database backups before plugin upgrades, migrations and bulk data changes; test that a backup can actually be restored.
- Record the database host, port, schema name and plugin version in your server documentation so another administrator can recover the setup.
Should you use MySQL or keep flat-file storage?

The correct choice depends on the plugin’s capabilities and your server layout. MySQL does not automatically improve a plugin that was designed for local files, and changing storage without a migration plan can leave existing data behind.
