Install LuckPerms in the directory that matches your server software, restart until the console confirms it is enabled, then build permission groups instead of assigning nodes one player at a time. Link groups with inheritance, use parent add when you want to preserve existing memberships, and use parent set only when replacing them. Add permissions to groups, keep wildcards tightly controlled, and test each change in the intended world or server context.

Command details can change between LuckPerms releases. The workflow below follows the syntax documented for current LuckPerms 5.x guidance; verify command help against the version installed on your server before applying changes.

What LuckPerms controls
LuckPerms is a permissions manager. It decides which command or plugin permission nodes a player receives, which groups inherit from one another, and (optionally) which world or server context a permission applies to. It does not create the permission nodes for other plugins. A node such as essentials.fly comes from the plugin that implements flight; LuckPerms stores and evaluates the grant.
A maintainable setup has three layers:
- Groups: named bundles such as
default,member,mod, andadmin. - Inheritance: higher groups receive lower groups’ permissions without copying every node.
- Assignments: players become members of groups through parent relationships.
Keeping those layers separate means one permission change can update every appropriate player, while a temporary exception remains possible when it is genuinely needed.

Before you install
Identify the server platform
Use the installation directory that matches the software running your server:

Do not place a plugin build in a mod loader’s directory or a mod build in a plugin directory. Download the LuckPerms build intended for the platform you actually run, and keep a copy of the server files before changing access rules.

- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the appropriate LuckPerms jar into
/pluginsor/mods. - Start the server and watch the console.
- Continue only after the console reports that LuckPerms is enabled. If it does not load, stop and resolve the platform, Java, or file-placement error first.
Compatibility with a particular Minecraft version, Paper build, Fabric loader, Forge build, or NeoForge build is not established by the command syntax alone. Check the release information for your server stack and use the version’s in-game or console help when a command differs.
Give yourself initial LuckPerms access
A fresh installation does not automatically make a player a LuckPerms administrator. Until you grant an account LuckPerms permissions, commands such as group creation or permission assignment may be denied.
From the server console, or from an account that already has administrative access, grant your player the LuckPerms wildcard:
/lp user <your-player-name> permission set luckperms.* true
Replace <your-player-name> with the exact Minecraft name. The console normally accepts the command without a leading slash; in chat, retain the slash. Treat this as bootstrap access, not a reason to give every administrator every plugin’s permission. Once you have built a controlled administrator group, move routine administration to that group and remove unnecessary direct grants.
Design groups before adding nodes
Start with roles that represent real bundles
Create groups for responsibilities that actually exist on your server. A practical starting structure is:

Do not create a group for every rank you might someday sell or announce. Each group should correspond to a permission bundle you can explain. Fewer, meaningful groups make audits, promotions, and removals safer.

Create the groups
Run one command per group:
/lp creategroup default/lp creategroup member/lp creategroup mod/lp creategroup admin
Use lowercase, uncomplicated names unless your existing naming convention requires otherwise. If a group already exists, do not recreate it; inspect and edit the existing group instead.
Build inheritance from least privilege upward
Make a higher role inherit the lower role’s permissions. For example, to make admin inherit mod:

Repeat the relationship for each level that should inherit another. A chain such as admin → mod → member → default lets you add a baseline permission once rather than duplicating it in every group.
Inheritance is not a ranking by itself. If two groups apply to the same player, LuckPerms uses group priority and weights when it must choose a primary or otherwise resolve precedence. Set weights deliberately when your server uses them; do not assume the order in which groups were created is a priority system.
parent add and parent set are different operations
This distinction prevents accidental demotions and permission loss.

For example, /lp group admin parent add mod gives the admin group the moderator permissions while leaving any other parent relationships intact. Use the additive form when preserving existing relationships matters. The LuckPerms documentation cautions that when primary-group-calculation is not stored, you should use parent add or parent set rather than a primary-group switching command.
Grant permissions to groups, not individual players
Set a node
Assign a plugin’s permission node to the group that needs it:
/lp group <group> permission set <node> true
For example, the documented syntax for allowing the ban command to the administrator group is:

/lp group admin permission set minecraft.command.ban true
Replace the node with the exact node published by the plugin you are configuring. LuckPerms cannot infer whether a spelling is valid; a typo simply fails to grant the intended capability.

To remove the example ban permission from admin, use:
/lp group admin permission unset minecraft.command.ban
Prefer group grants for normal policy. A direct player grant can be useful for a narrowly scoped exception, but it becomes difficult to audit when many players accumulate individual nodes.
Grant in dependency order
- Put universal, low-risk nodes on
default. - Add optional player features to
memberorvip. - Add moderation nodes to
mod, then letadmininherit them if appropriate. - Add only administrative nodes that the administrator role truly needs.
- Test with a player account in each role before promoting real users.
Wildcards: convenient, but broad
A wildcard grant such as * can enable every permission known to the server. The LuckPerms wildcard luckperms.* similarly covers LuckPerms administration. These shortcuts are fast for a controlled owner account, but they also cover nodes added by future plugins. A new plugin can therefore become available to a wildcard administrator without a deliberate policy review.

Never use a wildcard as a substitute for understanding what a moderation role can do.

/lp user <player> parent add <group>
This is the safer promotion command when the player may already have another valid membership. For example:
/lp user Alex parent add mod
The player’s existing groups remain, and the new moderator relationship is added.

Replace a role deliberately
When groups are mutually exclusive and you want to replace the current assignment:
/lp user <player> parent set <group>
For example:
/lp user Alex parent set member
Because parent set replaces the assignment, confirm that the player should lose every previous parent before running it. If the account needs two roles at once, use parent add instead.
Use the web editor for visual, multi-change work
The command line is direct, scriptable, and easy to repeat. The web editor is useful when you are building several groups, reviewing inheritance, or want a visual representation before applying changes.
Open an editor session
/lp editoropens an editor session covering groups and related data./lp group <group> editoropens an editor focused on one group.
Run the command with LuckPerms administrative access, follow the generated browser session, make the changes, and apply them through the editor’s controls. Treat the generated session as an administrative credential: do not paste it into a public chat or share it with someone who should not edit permissions.
Choose the right interface

Whichever interface you use, make one logical change at a time and test it before combining unrelated policy changes.

Global permissions are evaluated everywhere the group applies. Contexts let you narrow a grant to a particular world or server. For example, flight might be allowed in a lobby or creative world but not in a PvP world; WorldEdit might be available on a dedicated build server but not on survival.
Use the editor or the context-aware permission form supported by your installed LuckPerms version to attach the world or server condition to the node. The exact command arguments can vary, so check the version’s help output rather than copying an argument order from an older release.
Design context rules explicitly:
- Decide whether the permission should be global, world-specific, server-specific, or both.
- Grant the narrow rule only to the group that needs it.
- Test in every relevant world or server, including a location where the permission should fail.
- Watch for an inherited global grant that defeats the restriction; remove or narrow the broader node if necessary.
Add prefixes only after permissions work
Prefixes are display metadata, not permission grants. LuckPerms can store a group prefix with the group’s meta settings, but a chat or tab-list plugin must actually render it. Many setups also use Vault as the bridge between the permissions manager and the chat plugin.

The group-level operation begins with:
/lp group <group> meta setprefix
Because prefix priority and formatting arguments differ by version and by the consuming chat plugin, use the command help for your installed release to complete the value and priority. Then configure the chat plugin to display the prefix and verify the result with a player in that group. If the prefix is stored but invisible, inspect the chat plugin’s format and whether its Vault integration is enabled; changing the permission node will not fix a formatting problem.
A complete starter setup
The following sequence creates a small, understandable hierarchy. Replace the example node with nodes documented by the plugins on your server.
- Create the groups:
/lp creategroup default,/lp creategroup member,/lp creategroup mod, and/lp creategroup admin. - Link the hierarchy with parent additions, for example
/lp group member parent add default,/lp group mod parent add member, and/lp group admin parent add mod. - Grant baseline nodes to
defaultwith/lp group default permission set <node> true. - Grant optional player nodes to
member, moderation nodes tomod, and administrative nodes toadmin. - Add a player without removing existing roles:
/lp user <player> parent add member. - Promote a player while preserving the existing role:
/lp user <player> parent add mod. - Replace a mutually exclusive tier only after checking the consequence:
/lp user <player> parent set member. - Test each role with a real account or a controlled test account in every world where contexts matter.
This structure is intentionally small. Add a new group only when it represents a distinct bundle or responsibility, and connect it to the existing hierarchy instead of copying all of its nodes.
Troubleshoot a permission that does not work
The LuckPerms commands are unknown
- Confirm the jar is in
/pluginsfor Paper, Spigot, or Bukkit, or in/modsfor Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. - Restart and check for the LuckPerms enabled message in the console.
- Verify that you installed a build for the server platform, not a different loader.
A player still lacks a permission
- Check that the player is in the intended group with
parent addorparent set. - Check the exact node spelling and whether the granting plugin uses a different node.
- Look for an explicit
falseassignment or a more specific context that denies the action. - Check inheritance: the player’s group must actually inherit the group where the node was granted.
- Test in the correct world or server if the node is context-limited.
A player has too much access
- Review every parent group, not just the primary group.
- Search for direct player grants and wildcard grants.
- Look for an inherited wildcard higher in the hierarchy.
- Use
unsetto remove an unintended stored value, then retest.
A promotion removed unrelated permissions
You probably used parent set where an additive relationship was intended. Re-add the required group with parent add, then review the player’s complete parent structure before making another change.
The prefix does not appear
Confirm that the prefix was stored on the correct group, that the player belongs to that group, and that the chat or tab-list plugin is configured to render LuckPerms metadata. Check Vault integration if your setup depends on it. A visible prefix is a display integration issue, not proof that the permission node itself is working.
