Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To make website screenshots load faster without blurring their text, first resize each image for its displayed width and the visitor’s screen density, then compare lossless PNG, WebP, and AVIF files. Serve a small set of responsive image sizes, reserve their layout space, and check the actual result in a browser. There is no single compression percentage that works for every screenshot.
1. Start with the size the page actually displays
Compression cannot fix a screenshot that is far larger in dimensions than its layout requires. A 2,000-pixel-wide capture displayed in a 600-pixel column carries unnecessary pixels for many visitors. First measure the image’s CSS display width at the page’s common layout sizes. Then account for device pixel ratio: a high-density screen may need a larger source to look sharp at the same CSS width. The right source dimensions depend on both factors, not on the original capture size alone. web.dev’s image performance guide and MDN’s responsive images guide explain how the browser uses responsive image candidates.

Make variants for real layout needs
For a fluid screenshot, generate a small set of widths that covers the actual rendered sizes and common display densities. Avoid making a file for every minor width: each variant adds storage, cache entries, and maintenance. If the mobile layout needs a different crop rather than just a smaller version, use a separate art-directed source with a media condition.
2. Choose a format that preserves interface detail
Screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art usually benefit from lossless encoding. Unlike photographs, screenshots contain sharp edges, small text, and flat color fields; lossy artifacts around those features can be immediately visible. PNG is a dependable lossless option. WebP and AVIF also support lossless encoding, so compare them with PNG if your image pipeline and target browsers support them. See MDN’s image format guide.

| Format | Useful for screenshots | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless text and edge fidelity; transparency | Compare file size with lossless newer formats |
| WebP | Lossless or lossy encoding; transparency | Use a fallback if your audience includes browsers that cannot decode it |
| AVIF | Lossless or lossy encoding | Support is less broad than WebP; provide a fallback when needed |
| JPEG | Often suitable for photographic fallback images | Lossy compression makes it a poor default when screenshot text and edges must stay crisp |
web.dev reports that AVIF tests have shown more than 50% savings compared with JPEG in some cases. That is a general result, not a promise for screenshots or for every image. Judge the delivered bytes alongside text and edge quality. In particular, high-contrast colored text on a flat background can show visible artifacts from lossy compression. web.dev discusses this risk.
When lossy compression is worth testing
If lossless files remain too large, test lossy settings on representative screenshots rather than adopting a universal quality value. Inspect small labels, thin borders, icons, and colored text at the actual display size. Compare files at a visually acceptable result; an encoder’s quality number is not a cross-format measure of perceived fidelity.
3. Mark up responsive screenshots so browsers can choose
For multiple resolutions of the same image, use srcset with width descriptors and sizes to describe the expected CSS width. Keep a real img fallback. For alternative formats, use picture sources followed by the fallback image. If you use a different mobile crop, add a media condition to the corresponding source.

Replace the example paths, intrinsic dimensions, and sizes values with the files and layout your page actually uses. Width descriptors tell the browser each candidate’s intrinsic width; sizes communicates its intended rendered width. Use an appropriate fallback format for your audience and verify that the fallback itself exists. For a crop change on small screens, add a source such as <source media="(max-width: 700px)" ...> with its own crop and candidates.
Explicit width and height let the browser reserve the image’s aspect ratio before it downloads, reducing layout shifts. Responsive CSS can still constrain the image to its container, for example img { max-width: 100%; height: auto; }. MDN covers the element’s dimensions and behavior in its img reference.
4. Load images according to when readers need them
For screenshots below or near the initial viewport, native lazy loading can defer work until the image is approaching view: use loading="lazy". Do not lazy-load an image needed immediately in the first viewport; prompt loading is more appropriate for content visitors need to see right away. Keep dimensions present either way so deferred loading does not leave an unpredictable gap. See MDN’s multimedia performance guide and the img reference.

5. A practical compression and verification workflow
- Measure the image area. Check the rendered CSS width at representative viewport sizes and identify whether the screenshot is above or below the fold.
- Generate useful widths. Create only candidates that cover those widths and likely display-density needs. Create a different crop only when the layout calls for one.
- Encode losslessly first. Produce PNG and, where supported by your pipeline, lossless WebP or AVIF variants.
- Compare actual files. Record each delivered file’s bytes and inspect text, borders, icons, and flat-color areas at the real rendered size. If testing lossy settings, select per image based on the visible result.
- Add responsive markup and dimensions. Use
srcsetandsizesfor resolution choices, picturefor format alternatives or crops, and explicit image dimensions to reserve space. - Set loading behavior. Lazy-load below-the-fold images; keep immediately needed content eligible to load promptly.
- Verify in a browser. At representative viewport sizes, inspect the Network panel to confirm which candidate and format were fetched, that the fallback works, and that the layout remains stable.
6. Troubleshoot common problems
The screenshot looks blurry or has colored fringes
Check that the chosen source is large enough for its CSS width and device pixel ratio. If dimensions are adequate, compare against a lossless file: lossy compression can damage fine edges and colored text even when the overall image looks acceptable.

The browser downloads the largest candidate every time
Check the width descriptors and make sure the sizes attribute reflects the image’s real CSS width. Inspect the Network panel at more than one viewport width; the browser’s choice can also depend on its environment and display density, so verify behavior rather than expecting one fixed candidate.
A format alternative does not display
Confirm that the referenced file exists, that the source has the correct MIME type, and that a valid nested img fallback is present. Test with the browsers your visitors use; AVIF support is less broad than WebP.

The page shifts when the image appears
Set valid intrinsic width and height values that match the image aspect ratio. Keep responsive CSS from distorting that ratio.
Below-the-fold images slow the first view
Use native lazy loading for images outside or near the initial viewport, but do not defer an image that is needed immediately. Check actual loading behavior in the browser.
