To go live on YouTube, verify your channel, confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and choose mobile, webcam, an encoder, or a supported console based on what you want to show. Enable live streaming ahead of time—first-time activation can take up to 24 hours—then test your audio, video, connection, and visibility before the event.
What do you need to go live on YouTube?
Start with an eligible channel and a way to capture or send the content. YouTube’s current help guidance says a channel needs to be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general live-streaming overview sets the minimum age at 16. Mobile streaming has extra eligibility requirements, including at least 50 subscribers. Requirements can change or vary with account circumstances, so check YouTube Studio and the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning an event.

- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming available.
- A phone, computer with webcam, encoder setup, or supported console, depending on the content.
- A stable upload connection with capacity above your stream’s bitrate.
- Time to enable live streaming and test your setup before the event.
You do not have to buy a camera, microphone, or production system to begin. YouTube’s streaming tips say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” An external microphone or webcam can help when your built-in equipment is inadequate, but neither is a universal requirement.

| Method | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Vlogging and quick updates | Requires mobile eligibility, including at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, and no recent live restrictions. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s mobile live-streaming instructions. |
| Webcam | A simple talking stream from a computer | Requires a computer with a webcam; YouTube describes this as a quick way to stream from a computer. See Get started with live streaming. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio/video gear | Encoder software or hardware sends the stream. Plan and test the setup before the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide. |
| Console | Gameplay from a supported modern console | YouTube says modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles can stream directly. Follow the console maker’s instructions. |
Pick the simplest method that covers what you need to show. A talking update may need only a phone or webcam; gameplay with overlays or screen sharing is a better fit for an encoder.

How do you prepare your channel and stream?
- Verify the channel and check eligibility. Confirm verification and review YouTube Studio for live-streaming availability or restrictions. YouTube says a channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- Enable live streaming early. If this is your first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Do not leave enabling the feature until the start time.
- Choose visibility deliberately. Select public, unlisted, or private for the event. For a personal stream where privacy matters, YouTube recommends private or unlisted settings.
- Set up the chosen method. For webcam or mobile, check that the intended camera and microphone are selected. For an encoder, connect the camera, microphone, or headset and confirm the correct devices in the encoder and YouTube’s live setup.
- Review the title and event details. Make sure the audience can recognize the stream and that its visibility matches your intention.
- Run a representative test. Include the movement and audio expected in the real event. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify the event can be reached from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
How much upload speed do you need?
Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving about 20% headroom. Other people and devices sharing the network can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream, and upload speed can be lower than download speed. A speed test is only useful if it reflects the connection and network conditions you expect during the broadcast.
For encoder streams, YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current official encoder settings and bitrate table for your chosen mode rather than treating one setting as universal. For example, YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps is 14 Mbps; the listed AV1/H.265 recommendation for that mode is 10 Mbps. Those are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will sustain them.

How do you keep a live stream safe and accessible?
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting and monitor stream health while live.
- Verify access from the channel or watch page and a mobile device, especially if you selected unlisted or private visibility.
- Avoid showing or saying personal information unintentionally, including information visible in notifications, browser tabs, or live chat.
- Give channel administration access only to people you trust. Use YouTube’s reporting and blocking tools if chat users make viewers uncomfortable.
- Community rules apply to live content and live chat. Do not assume live broadcasts are exempt from copyright or other YouTube policies; use content you have the rights to use and review YouTube’s current rules before streaming.
If YouTube shows an active restriction, consult the current Studio status and official guidance for that account. Do not try to evade a restriction by switching to another channel.
