Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOn Windows 10 or 11, you can use the built-in compact command to apply NTFS compression to a game folder without turning it into an archive that must be extracted before play. First confirm the game drive uses NTFS, compress one game folder as a test, and keep the matching command to undo the change. Savings vary by game, and no general percentage or universal compatibility guarantee is established.
What game compression does—and what it does not do
Windows NTFS compression stores eligible files in compressed form while letting Windows expose them through the normal file system. It is not ZIP or RAR archiving: the game does not need to be extracted before launch. Microsoft describes compact as “the command-line version of the NTFS file system compression feature.” The command is documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and supports compression and decompression of files and directories.

This is distinct from CompactOS, a separate Windows feature. For an individual game folder, the commands below use compact to select file-system compression.

Before compressing a game
- Check the game drive’s file system. NTFS is required; the documented command cannot compress files on FAT or FAT32 partitions.
- Target the game’s actual folder. Avoid applying the operation to an entire drive or a parent directory containing unrelated files.
- Back up saves according to the game or platform’s guidance. Saves may be outside the installation directory, and compression compatibility is not certified for every game or anti-cheat setup.
- Choose a test game. Check that it launches and behaves normally after compression before applying the process to other games.
Compress a game folder with Windows
- Find the install folder. In Steam, open the game’s properties and look for its installed files or browse to the library folder. Use the folder belonging to the game you intend to test.
- Open Command Prompt. Use a Windows account with permission to modify the game files. If access is denied, close the game and launcher first; use an elevated Command Prompt only if necessary.
- Run the compression command. Replace the example path with the game’s actual folder. This example uses LZX, one of the algorithms documented for executable-style compression:
compact /c /s /exe:lzx "D:GamesExample"/ccompresses and/sapplies the operation through the directory tree. Read the command output to confirm what was processed. - Test the game. Launch it through its normal launcher, check that it loads and plays as expected, and inspect any relevant anti-cheat or launcher errors. If a problem appears, reverse the operation with the command below.
- Measure the result. Compare the game folder’s size on disk before and after compression. Do not assume the listed file sizes alone represent disk space freed.
Microsoft also documents XPRESS4K, XPRESS8K, and XPRESS16K under /EXE; LZX is described as the most compact option. That description does not establish which option is fastest or best for a particular game, so treat the algorithm choice as a test rather than a performance promise.

- Customize your drive’s RGB lighting with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only) to show off your style and make every play personal.
- Kick loading into overdrive with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface and speeds up to 2,000MB/s. (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
- Compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. {Compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro or PS4 with system software version 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 (Play and store PS4 games; archive PS5 games), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S (Play and store Xbox One games; archive Xbox Series X|S games).}
- Keep more of the latest and largest titles installed and ready to launch with capacities of up to 2TB. (1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.)
- Built with WD_BLACK toughness thanks to a shock-resistant structure, this durable drive can survive a drop of up to two-meters.
Undo compression if a game has problems
Use the same compression family when reversing an executable-style operation. For the LZX example above, run:
compact /u /s /exe:lzx "D:GamesExample"
/u uncompresses files through the directory tree. The behavior of /u depends on whether /EXE is specified, so match the option used for compression. Check the command output, then test the game again.

How much space can compression save?
There is no dependable universal percentage for PC games. Results depend on the files in the installation and whether the developer already compressed them. A third-party utility’s listing likewise warns that its estimates are approximate and game-dependent; an estimate is not a guarantee for your installation.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Keep an eye on updates
Files added or modified by a game update can reduce the compression savings. Microsoft’s Win32 documentation also says that files and subdirectories inherit a parent directory’s compression attribute when created. After a major update, check the game folder’s size and compression state; recompressing may be useful if savings have fallen. A third-party utility vendor recommends rechecking updated games, but that is vendor guidance rather than independent testing.

Move an installation to another drive
Steam documents how to move a Steam installation and games to another drive. A second internal drive or other compatible destination can be preferable if compression does not suit a game or your PC. Check the destination’s capacity, performance, and compatibility with your system; no particular drive model is established as suitable for every PC.

Stream eligible games instead of installing them
Xbox cloud gaming supports Windows PCs for supported titles and regions. Most supported games require an eligible Game Pass subscription, and the service has a minimum connection-speed requirement. Some games a user owns can be streamed without installation through the Xbox PC app. This only applies to eligible games and regions; check the current catalog, plan requirements, and connection conditions before counting on it to free local space.

Optional graphical tool
Game Compressor is a third-party Windows utility whose Steam listing describes an interface for Windows LZX compression, estimated savings, and reversible decompression. The listing says an NTFS drive that supports LZX is required and that results vary; updates may require reoptimization. It is an optional interface, not a requirement for using Windows compression. Check its current terms and compatibility before installing it.
