To free up space on a Windows gaming PC without compressing game files, first find what is using the drive, then remove games and apps you no longer want, clean reviewed temporary files, or move personal files to another drive. To avoid repeating the cleanup, set another drive as the save location for new content. Windows estimates the space each selected cleanup item could free on your PC; there is no reliable fixed amount.
Find what is using space before you delete anything
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Review the storage categories and select Cleanup recommendations.
- Check the suggested categories—such as Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps—and review the individual items before selecting anything to remove. Windows shows an estimated saving for the selections.
- If you have more than one drive, use the storage view for other drives to see how space is being used there too.
The estimate is specific to your PC and selected items, not a promised amount. Avoid selecting everything without checking what it contains, especially personal files or cloud-synced items.

Uninstall games and apps you no longer use
Games you have finished or apps you no longer need can be a direct source of recoverable space. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the exact label can vary by Windows version), choose an app you recognize and no longer want, then select Uninstall. You can also use the game’s launcher if that is where you manage it.

If you want to keep a game but move it to another drive, check the current instructions for its launcher. The steps differ by launcher; Windows’ option for choosing where new content is saved is not a universal way to relocate every game already installed.

Remove temporary files with Windows cleanup tools
Review temporary files in Storage
From Settings > System > Storage, open the temporary-file controls or Cleanup recommendations, inspect the categories, and select only items you intend to remove. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance describes automatic cleanup of temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. By default, it does not remove items from Downloads or OneDrive and other cloud-provider folders; those behaviors depend on settings you choose.
Use Disk Cleanup when you want to inspect system-file categories
Windows also documents Disk Cleanup, which describes the file categories it can remove and includes a Clean up system files option. Review the descriptions and selections before confirming. Do not manually delete unfamiliar folders in Windows or a game’s installation directory as a shortcut to cleanup.

Storage Sense works on the system drive. For details about storage use on another drive, return to Storage settings and select that drive’s storage view rather than assuming system-drive cleanup will cover it.

Move large personal files you want to keep
Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads are common places to check. Sort a folder by size and review large files. On a gaming PC, examples might include gameplay recordings, screenshots, downloaded installers, and personal media; whether any of these takes substantial space depends on what you have saved.

- Keep the file: move it to another internal drive or an external drive, then check that it opens from its new location.
- Do not need it: delete it, then empty the Recycle Bin if you want the deleted files’ space released.
- Use an external drive: files on it do not occupy space on the PC while it is disconnected, but you cannot access them until you reconnect it.
Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guidance covers moving files to another drive or external storage. Keep a second copy of anything important if losing it would be a problem.
Set another drive as the destination for new content
If the PC has a second internal drive, Windows can direct certain new content there. Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved, choose the relevant content type, select the other drive, and apply the change. This helps prevent future content from filling the original drive; it does not necessarily move existing files or installed games.

Use OneDrive Files On-Demand only for OneDrive files
For files stored in OneDrive, Files On-Demand can leave a smaller placeholder on the PC while the full file remains in OneDrive. This can reduce local storage use for supported cloud files, but access to the full file depends on being able to reach the cloud account and service. It does not compress or shrink installed game files, and it is relevant only if you use OneDrive for those files.

Delete Windows.old only if you no longer need to roll back
If Windows lists a previous installation under removable system files, deleting it removes the Windows.old files needed to return to the earlier Windows version. Microsoft warns that this rollback option cannot be restored after deletion. Use this cleanup only after deciding that you do not need to go back to the previous version.

The Windows paths above are for Windows PCs, chiefly Windows 10 and 11; labels may differ by version. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Cleanup can recover storage, but the cited Windows guidance does not promise a particular amount of space or a game-performance improvement.
