Disable an entry before deleting it, and remove only items that clearly belong to the utility you already uninstalled. This sequence cleans up residue without deleting game saves, shared Windows components or hardware drivers by mistake.
What “complete uninstall” actually includes
Removing the visible program folder is only one part of cleanup. A gaming utility may also install an updater, tray process, auto-start service, scheduled task, driver, registry run entry or user-data folder. Windows can therefore show a clean Apps list while a launcher or helper still starts at sign-in.

A safe cleanup has five goals:
- Remove the main application through its supported uninstaller.
- Stop processes and services that could keep files locked.
- Check startup and persistence locations beyond the Startup folder.
- Remove a device or driver only when you deliberately identify it.
- Preserve saves, screenshots, mods, configuration and reusable game libraries unless you specifically want them erased.
The normal Windows uninstall control is the least risky starting point. Manual deletion is reserved for clearly identified leftovers after the supported uninstall has finished.

Close every related process
Exit the game, launcher window, system-tray client, updater and overlay. If the utility remains open, right-click its tray icon and choose its exit command. When it refuses to close, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the clearly named process, and choose End task. End only processes belonging to the utility; do not stop an unfamiliar Windows, graphics, audio or security process merely because it is running.

Decide what data must stay
Uninstallers commonly leave personal data because it may contain saves, screenshots, mods, controller profiles or settings. If you may reinstall, copy those folders first. A game library such as Steam’s steamapps directory should be moved outside the client’s installation directory if you want to keep the downloaded games while removing the client.
Create a recovery point for advanced cleanup
Before deleting a service, driver or registry-backed startup entry, create a Windows restore point or another backup you trust. A restore point does not replace a backup of game saves, but it gives you a way to recover from an incorrect system change.
Use Windows’ normal uninstall path first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On older Windows builds, open Control Panel > Programs and Features or Add or remove programs.
- Find the gaming utility, select its menu button, and choose Uninstall. Follow the utility’s own wizard, including any option to remove an updater or helper component.
- When the wizard finishes, restart Windows. Rebooting releases locked files and shows whether a service or startup item comes back after sign-in.
- Try the utility’s launcher, tray icon and game integration once. If none appears and the program is gone from Installed apps, continue only if you are checking for residue or troubleshooting a startup conflict.
If the uninstall button fails, return to Task Manager, end the utility’s running processes, and retry. Security software, a pending update or a file in use can otherwise make an uninstaller appear to do nothing.
Follow the vendor’s cleanup rules
Steam
If you may reinstall Steam, move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling. This preserves installed game files while the client is removed. Then use Windows’ uninstall control for Steam. Its service component, named SteamService, should be removed by the supported uninstall process. After the restart, verify that Steam no longer appears in Installed apps, the notification area or startup entries.

Epic Games Launcher
Epic documents two supported routes for removing a game: select the game in the Epic Games Launcher and choose its uninstall command, or remove it through Windows Add or remove programs. Removing a game is separate from removing the launcher itself. Decide which one you intend to delete so that an otherwise useful launcher and its library are not removed accidentally.
Riot Vanguard
Riot Vanguard is a separate security component, not merely a launcher window. Riot instructs users to close Riot games and the Riot Client, exit Vanguard from the system tray, and then uninstall Vanguard either from the tray control or from Windows’ installed-app list.
Most games using the Riot Client require Vanguard. After Vanguard is uninstalled, those games will not launch until Vanguard is installed again. This is expected behavior, not evidence that the uninstall failed. Restart after removal and reinstall Vanguard only when you next need a game that requires it.
Find startup programs and services that remain
Use Task Manager for a quick check
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Sort by name or publisher and look for the uninstalled utility, its updater or a clearly matching helper.
- Right-click a matching entry and choose Disable. Disabling is reversible and is the safest first test.
- Restart Windows and confirm whether the unwanted process still starts.
A disabled startup entry is not proof that every component is gone; it only prevents that particular auto-start mechanism. If the entry returns or the process starts from another location, perform a broader inventory.

Use a clean boot to isolate a conflict
Microsoft describes a clean boot as starting Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, which helps identify background software conflicts affecting apps or games. Use it for diagnosis, not as a permanent cleanup method.
- Open the Windows system-configuration tool and select the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services first. This prevents you from disabling core Windows services.
- Choose Disable all for the remaining third-party services, or disable only the suspected utility’s service.
- Open Task Manager from the startup section and disable each currently enabled startup app you need to test.
- Restart and reproduce the problem. If it disappears, re-enable items in small groups until the offending utility is identified.
- Return to normal startup settings after testing so security tools, drivers and other needed software load normally.
Microsoft warns that the System Configuration utility should be used to change advanced boot options only with guidance from a Microsoft support engineer. Do not alter boot settings there casually; the service and startup isolation steps above are intended for troubleshooting.
Inventory every auto-start location with Autoruns
Task Manager does not show every persistence point. Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns can inventory Startup-folder items, Run and RunOnce registry keys, scheduled and boot-related locations, auto-start services, drivers and other launch points.

- Choose Options > Hide Signed Microsoft Entries to focus the initial review on third-party items. This filter is for investigation, not permission to delete everything that remains.
- Inspect the publisher, entry name and full file path. Use the path to decide whether the item belongs to the gaming utility you just removed.
- Uncheck a matching entry first and restart. Autoruns documents that unchecking disables an auto-start entry.
- If the system remains stable and the entry is unquestionably obsolete, select it and use the Delete command or toolbar button. Autoruns documents deletion this way.
Look across the tabs, not only the Logon tab. A launcher may persist as a service, scheduled task or driver. Never delete an entry solely because its name is unfamiliar, its publisher is blank, or it is highlighted after hiding Microsoft entries. Shared runtimes, graphics drivers, audio software, anti-malware tools and Windows components can be used by several games.

Remove a leftover driver or device carefully
Some gaming utilities install a virtual device, controller filter or other driver. If you can identify that hardware or driver as belonging to the utility, open Device Manager, locate the intended device, right-click it and choose Uninstall device. When Windows presents Delete the driver software for this device, select it only when you are certain the package belongs to the component being removed. Restarting may be required.
Do not use Device Manager as a general cleanup shortcut. Removing a graphics, audio, network, storage or security driver can disable unrelated hardware or games. If the vendor does not document a driver removal and you cannot identify the device confidently, leave it installed and seek the vendor’s support procedure.

Check documented installation locations
After restarting, inspect the vendor’s documented installation directory and the user-data locations it names. Delete only folders clearly labeled for the uninstalled utility and only after confirming that they do not contain data you want to keep. A folder containing saves, screenshots, mods, controller profiles or configuration should be backed up or retained.
Use the file path from Autoruns
If Autoruns identifies a stale entry, its file path tells you where the executable or service was installed. Confirm that the path belongs to the removed utility, disable the entry, restart, and then remove the orphaned file or folder if Windows no longer needs it. If Windows reports that a file is in use, do not force-delete it blindly; recheck for a remaining process or service and reboot before trying again.
Do not purge shared components
Generic folders and runtimes are often shared by multiple games. Names associated with Microsoft, graphics drivers, audio drivers, anti-malware software or common runtime libraries are not evidence of gaming-utility residue. Keep them unless the owner and purpose are established.
Which cleanup method should you use?

Troubleshoot common outcomes
The launcher still starts after uninstall
Restart first, then check Task Manager’s Startup apps. If the entry is absent, inspect Autoruns for a Run key, scheduled task or service whose publisher and path match the removed utility. Disable it, restart, and delete it only after confirming the system is unaffected.
The uninstaller says the program is running
Exit the tray icon, end the launcher and updater in Task Manager, and retry. If a service is keeping the file open, use the vendor’s documented removal path rather than deleting its executable while it is active.
A game stops launching after cleanup
Check whether you removed a required security component. In particular, games that require Riot Vanguard will not launch after Vanguard is uninstalled; reinstalling that component restores the prerequisite. Also verify that you did not remove a shared graphics, audio or runtime component.
The startup item has no obvious name
Use Autoruns to inspect its publisher and file path, then search that path in the utility’s installation documentation. Leave the item enabled if ownership is uncertain. An unfamiliar entry is not automatically leftover malware or gaming software.
Windows becomes unstable after a manual deletion
Re-enable a disabled Autoruns entry if that was the last change. Use the restore point you created before advanced cleanup if necessary. For a driver-related problem, reinstall the correct hardware driver from its manufacturer rather than deleting additional entries at random.
Final verification checklist
- The utility is absent from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Its game, launcher, tray process and updater do not return after a restart.
- No clearly matching entry remains enabled in Task Manager’s Startup apps.
- Autoruns shows no confirmed leftover Run key, task, service, driver or startup-folder entry.
- Any vendor-specific component, such as SteamService or Riot Vanguard, was handled according to its documented procedure.
- Only a confirmed utility-owned device or driver was removed in Device Manager.
- Saved games, screenshots, mods and configuration were preserved or backed up as intended.
- Windows services, graphics and audio drivers, anti-malware software and shared runtimes remain intact.
This staged approach gives you the broadest cleanup while keeping risky manual deletion as the final, evidence-based step.
