To complete the Fire Temple, enter as Adult Link with the Hookshot and Goron Tunic, rescue the imprisoned Gorons, collect the Dungeon Map and Compass, defeat the temple’s Flare Dancers, claim the Megaton Hammer, find the Boss Key, and defeat Volvagia. The dungeon ends when you take the Heart Container and receive the Fire Medallion.
What you need before entering
The Fire Temple is the fifth dungeon in Ocarina of Time and is located in Death Mountain Crater. It is an Adult Link dungeon, so it cannot be completed during the child portion of the game.

- Play as Adult Link.
- Have the Hookshot. It is needed for the dungeon’s vertical traversal and several routes between rooms.
- Speak with Darunia’s son in Goron City and receive the Goron Tunic.
- Enter through the Death Mountain Crater route.
The Goron Tunic is the practical preparation that makes a sustained visit possible. Put it on before committing to the dungeon so you do not have to leave to change equipment.
How the Fire Temple’s keys and maps work
Fire Temple progress is controlled by two different kinds of keys. Small keys open locked dungeon doors; each one is consumed when used and applies only to the dungeon where it was found. The Boss Key is different: it opens the door to the boss’s room.

The Dungeon Map fills in rooms as you explore them. The Compass adds the locations of treasure chests and marks the boss’s location with a skull. Nintendo’s manual describes the Compass as showing “the location of all treasure chests” and the dungeon boss. Use those tools as navigation aids rather than treating them as optional collectibles.
| Item or tool | What it does in this dungeon |
|---|---|
| Small key | Opens a locked Fire Temple door and is consumed when used. |
| Dungeon Map | Reveals the rooms you have visited and helps you understand the temple’s vertical layout. |
| Compass | Shows treasure-chest locations and marks the boss location with a skull. |
| Boss Key | Opens the door to Volvagia’s room. |
A locked door is therefore not a sign that you missed a permanent upgrade. It usually means that a small key is available in an accessible cell or puzzle room, while the final locked door requires the Boss Key.
Fire Temple walkthrough
1. Enter, find Darunia, and establish your first route
Follow the opening path into the temple and proceed toward Darunia. The early rooms introduce the dungeon’s central objective: captured Gorons are held in cells, and freeing them opens the route through the temple.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not rush past a cell after opening it. Talk to the Goron, check the room for its small key, and look for the doorway or switch that becomes usable after the rescue. The first keys establish the pattern used throughout the dungeon: exploration creates access, and access leads to the next locked section.
When the route branches, use the map to mark where you have already been mentally. The Fire Temple climbs and loops back on itself, so a room that appears to be a dead end may become useful after you obtain the Hammer.
2. Rescue every accessible Goron before forcing a locked route
Work through the cells that you can reach with your current equipment. Each rescued Goron is both a story objective and a progression check. Cells provide small keys that open the locked doors needed for later sections, so leaving an accessible prisoner behind often creates the impression that the dungeon has run out of keys.
- Enter an accessible prison room.
- Open the cell and speak with the Goron.
- Search the room for the small key and any newly usable exit.
- Record which locked door the key can reach before spending it.
- Return to the main route and continue toward the next prison or puzzle room.
The game does not give you a spare key merely because a door is nearby. If you use a key on one locked door, it is gone, so avoid wandering away from a newly opened cell without checking the surrounding route.

3. Collect the Dungeon Map and Compass early in your exploration
Collect the map and Compass as soon as the route makes them available. The map is especially valuable here because the temple is not a flat sequence of rooms: you climb, cross bridges and platforms, and later return toward the entrance area by a different route.
Use the Compass to distinguish a room that contains a chest from one that is merely a corridor. Its skull marker also tells you which direction ultimately leads to the boss room, even before you have the Boss Key. Neither item replaces a key, but both reduce backtracking and help you recognize whether you have skipped a reachable branch.
4. Solve the block, torch, switch, and flame-wall rooms
The middle portion combines environmental puzzles rather than relying on one item. Expect to move blocks, light or activate torches, trigger switches, and pass rooms protected by flame walls. The intended solution is usually visible in the room’s geometry: a block aligns with a marked space, a torch corresponds to a nearby flame, or a switch changes the route through a barrier.
- Block rooms: inspect the floor and walls before pushing. A block that is moved too early can obscure the route you need to use afterward, so look for the destination first.
- Torch rooms: identify every torch and the path that opens when the required flames are active. If a flame disappears, return to the source of the puzzle rather than repeatedly attacking the barrier.
- Switch rooms: activate a switch, then immediately check which door, platform, or bridge changed. Some switches are timed or alter a different part of the room.
- Flame-wall rooms: keep moving through the safe opening and avoid treating the wall as a target. The objective is to manipulate the room until a passage is available.
These rooms are also where the temple begins to test your ability to move vertically. If a route ends above or below you, look for Hookshot targets and climbable geometry before assuming the door is inaccessible.

Two Flare Dancers appear during the dungeon’s puzzle progression. Defeating them is part of opening the route, not a side activity. Enter each arena with enough room to move, avoid standing directly in the enemy’s path, and keep checking the room after the fight for the door or mechanism that has become usable.
The important practical lesson is to treat a Flare Dancer room as a gate. If the next door remains closed, the fight is not complete or the room’s post-battle mechanism has not been used. Do not leave assuming the enemy was optional.
6. Claim the Megaton Hammer
The Megaton Hammer is the major mid-dungeon item. Once you obtain it, revisit the temple’s heavy or rusted mechanisms. The Hammer is used on rusted switches and heavy obstacles that could not be handled during the opening exploration.

Recommended Free Tools
- Rusted switches that now respond to a Hammer strike.
- Heavy obstacles blocking a doorway or vertical route.
- Large mechanisms that connect the upper rooms to the entrance-side area.
- Previously visible paths that were clearly designed for a heavy weapon.
The Hammer is also the central weapon for the Volvagia encounter, so obtaining it is both a navigation milestone and the point at which the final battle becomes possible.
7. Continue upward, free the remaining reachable Gorons, and find the Boss Key
Use the Hammer to open the later routes and continue climbing through the upper-floor rooms. Keep freeing Gorons as their cells become reachable. The upper sections combine the earlier puzzle types with the new Hammer interactions, so a route that was impossible on your first visit may now be straightforward.
When you reach the Boss Key chest, collect it before attempting the final approach. The Boss Key is the item that opens the boss-room door; ordinary small keys cannot substitute for it.
At this stage, use the Compass’s skull marker to verify that your route is converging on the boss area. If the boss door does not open, you are either at the wrong locked door or have not yet collected the Boss Key.
8. Open the return route and approach the boss
Use the Megaton Hammer on the large pillar-and-switch route that connects the upper section back toward the entrance area and the boss approach. This is the temple’s final major navigation step. The newly opened path prevents you from having to retrace every earlier room and places you on the correct side of the boss door.
Before entering, confirm that you have the Boss Key and the Hammer equipped or readily accessible. Enter the boss room only after checking your inventory and health; the door is a commitment to the Volvagia fight, not another ordinary puzzle room.
How to defeat Volvagia
Understand the attack cycle
Volvagia emerges from holes around the arena. The reliable pattern is to evade first, wait for the opening, and strike second. Chasing the boss while it is moving exposes you to fire and sweeping attacks and makes the encounter harder than it needs to be.
- Watch the holes and identify where Volvagia is about to emerge.
- Move away from the fire and the boss’s sweeping attack path.
- Wait for Volvagia’s head to become exposed and vulnerable.
- Hit the head with the Megaton Hammer.
- Back away and repeat the emerge, evade, and Hammer cycle.
The head strike after an emergence is the core tactic. The Hammer is not merely a key item that happens to be useful in the arena; it is the intended primary weapon for damaging Volvagia.

Handle the flying phase without losing your position
When Volvagia flies around the room, prioritize survival and arena awareness. Keep moving so fire does not trap you, but do not run blindly across the platform. The walkthrough tradition for this fight notes that arrows can weaken Volvagia during its flying phase. Treat them as an optional way to reduce the boss’s strength, not as a replacement for the Hammer strike when the head emerges.
After the flying pass, return your attention to the holes. The fight is won by repeating the same controlled response rather than by trying to hit the boss continuously.
Common Volvagia mistakes
- Attacking too early: swinging before the head is exposed wastes the opening and can leave you in the fire path.
- Standing over a hole: keep moving between attacks so an emergence does not catch you in place.
- Ignoring the arena: fire and sweeping attacks matter as much as the boss’s location. Move first, then line up the Hammer.
- Overusing arrows: arrows may help during flight, but the decisive attack remains the Hammer strike after an emergence.
What counts as a completed Fire Temple
The story objective is to free the captured Gorons and stop Volvagia. After the boss falls, collect the Heart Container in the arena and receive the Fire Medallion. Do not leave the room before taking the Heart Container; it is the dungeon’s immediate health reward.
| Completion check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Required Gorons released | Confirms that the rescue objective and cell-based progression are complete. |
| Megaton Hammer obtained | Opens rusted switches, heavy obstacles, the final return route, and the boss strategy. |
| Boss Key collected | Allows entry through the boss-room door. |
| Volvagia defeated | Completes the dungeon’s main combat objective. |
| Heart Container taken | Claims the post-boss health upgrade. |
| Fire Medallion received | Confirms the dungeon’s story completion. |
Fire Temple troubleshooting
“I have a locked door and no key.”
Return to the last group of rooms you explored and check every accessible Goron cell. A rescued Goron’s room is a frequent source of the next small key. Also inspect side branches near block, torch, and switch puzzles; the key may be behind a mechanism rather than in the main corridor.
Remember that small keys are consumed and belong to this dungeon. A key from another dungeon cannot open a Fire Temple door, and a previously used Fire Temple key does not return to your inventory.

“I cannot reach a higher or lower room.”
Check the Dungeon Map for an overlapping room or a route that bends around the central structure. Then look for Hookshot targets and revisit heavy obstacles after obtaining the Megaton Hammer. The temple’s vertical design intentionally makes some early routes incomplete until a later item is acquired.
“The boss door will not open.”
Verify that the item you collected was the Boss Key, not an ordinary small key. Use the Compass’s skull marker to confirm that you are at the actual boss location. If the marker points elsewhere, continue through the upper-floor route and search for the Boss Key chest.
“I am stuck after getting the Megaton Hammer.”
Use it on rusted switches and heavy obstacles that you passed earlier. Then locate the large pillar-and-switch route that opens the return path toward the entrance and boss approach. The Hammer is meant to change the dungeon’s geometry; simply carrying it forward without revisiting those mechanisms leaves major routes closed.

Stop trying to follow the boss around the arena. Move away from the fire and sweeping attack, watch the holes, and wait for the head to emerge. The safe rhythm is evade, wait, Hammer the exposed head, and retreat. Arrows can help during flight, but they do not replace that timing.
Which version of the walkthrough should you follow?
Use an original-layout walkthrough for the standard version of Ocarina of Time. Master Quest changes dungeon layouts and puzzle routing, so a normal Fire Temple route should not be substituted for a Master Quest guide or vice versa.
The Ocarina of Time 3D walkthrough follows the same useful milestone structure—small keys, map, Compass, Megaton Hammer, Boss Key, and Volvagia—but the 3D release is still a separate edition. Check the game version before following room-by-room directions, especially if a guide tells you to push a block or enter a door that is not arranged the same way in your copy.
Quick route checklist
- Enter the Fire Temple as Adult Link through Death Mountain Crater.
- Confirm that you have the Hookshot and Goron Tunic.
- Follow the opening route to Darunia and the first imprisoned Gorons.
- Rescue every Goron accessible with your current equipment and collect the small keys from those cells.
- Collect the Dungeon Map and Compass.
- Solve the block, torch, switch, and flame-wall rooms.
- Defeat both Flare Dancers and continue through the newly opened routes.
- Obtain the Megaton Hammer.
- Use the Hammer on rusted switches and heavy obstacles, then continue through the upper-floor rooms.
- Free the remaining reachable Gorons and collect the Boss Key.
- Activate the large pillar-and-switch route that opens the return path.
- Enter Volvagia’s room with the Boss Key.
- Evade Volvagia’s fire and sweeping attacks, then Hammer its head after each emergence.
- Take the Heart Container and receive the Fire Medallion.
If every item and objective on this checklist is complete, the Fire Temple is finished. The dungeon’s apparent complexity comes from its vertical loops and delayed Hammer routes; tracking Goron cells, keys, and map markers turns it into a sequence of reachable checkpoints rather than a search for a hidden key count.
