Quest requirements and route at a glance
You can begin “An Unheard Farewell” only after reaching Chapter 2 and entering the Valley of Ashes. The objective is easy to miss because the quest giver is not standing in an obvious camp: he is inside a damaged carriage near the Guidepost and Demolished Path route.
- Chapter: Chapter 2, Valley of Ashes.
- Quest giver: Adjutant Sous-Officier, speaking through the window of a wrecked carriage.
- Required traversal: the elevator shaft in The Climb, followed by a jump to a ledge halfway up the shaft.
- Required ability: fire transmutation, used on the web-like or gold-vine barrier at the ledge.
- Evidence: the scouts’ letter or orders inside the hidden cave.
- Core reward: Sleight of Hand Amber, described as improving firearm reload time and weapon switching.

The lift route has two distinct destinations. The upper route continues the normal level path; the mid-shaft ledge leads to the scouts. If you ride directly to the top, you can pass the cave without ever seeing its entrance.

Where to start “An Unheard Farewell”
Find the carriage in the Valley of Ashes
Travel through the Valley of Ashes in Chapter 2 until you have encountered the first Grenadier. Continue toward the large broken bridge, but do not descend it immediately. Near the Guidepost and the route marked Demolished Path, look for a wrecked carriage. The Adjutant Sous-Officier is inside; interact with the carriage window rather than searching for a standing NPC outside.
Accept the missing-scouts objective
Speak with the Adjutant and agree to locate his missing scouts. The conversation establishes the objective and activates the route into The Climb. If the dialogue does not appear, check that you have passed the first Grenadier and are in the Chapter 2 Valley of Ashes section rather than an earlier area. The carriage is positioned before the descent over the large broken bridge, which is the most useful landmark when retracing the route.
How to reach The Climb and unlock the elevator
Cross the broken-bridge platforms
From the carriage, follow the Valley of Ashes path down across the broken bridge and its separated platforms. Keep moving toward the next lantern and the elevator area. The route is an exterior traversal section rather than a single uninterrupted corridor, so use the platforms and lanterns as confirmation that you are still on the intended path.

At the lift, glowing Nephtoglobin growths or orbs obstruct the mechanism. Shoot or otherwise destroy every visible glowing growth around the elevator route. The terminology varies between walkthroughs—some call them growths and others call them glowing orbs—but they refer to the same lift-blocking targets.

Do not assume that breaking one target has opened the entire shaft. Continue through the nearby cave route and complete the exterior traversal section until the elevator can travel through its full shaft. The lift is not ready for the hidden-cave jump until this route has been opened.
Confirm that the lift is fully operational
Once the Nephtoglobin targets are gone and the surrounding traversal is complete, call or board the elevator and watch its movement. A lift that only reaches part of the shaft indicates that a growth remains or that the exterior route has not been completed. Search the edges of the lift approach and adjacent cave path for another glowing obstruction before trying the jump.
How to find the hidden scouts’ cave
Ride to the middle of the shaft
When the elevator is unlocked, board it and pay attention to the walls as it moves. The cave is not at the top landing. It is on a narrow ledge partway up the shaft, opposite the route you used earlier. The ledge can be passed in seconds if you keep looking only toward the final landing.

Jump from the moving lift
As the lift passes the mid-shaft ledge, move to the side facing that ledge and jump off. Aim for the narrow platform rather than the upper or lower landing. The jump is intentional: there is no conventional doorway from the main path that leads into the scouts’ cave.

If you miss, use the lift’s next cycle instead of trying to force a recovery from the shaft wall. Reposition on the platform, wait for the lift to return, and make the jump when the ledge is level with the lift. The key visual cue is the barrier on the ledge, not a quest marker at the top of the shaft.
Recognize the cave entrance
The ledge is blocked by a barrier that appears as web-like material or intertwined gold vines. This is the entrance to the hidden route. If you have reached the upper landing and found only the normal continuation, you have gone too far; return to the lift and watch for the mid-shaft ledge on the opposite side.
Use fire transmutation to open the barrier
Equip or activate fire transmutation while standing near the web or gold-vine obstruction. Burn the barrier away to reveal the passage. Ordinary attacks do not substitute for this interaction, so a sealed entrance after repeated weapon strikes usually means the fire transmutation is not active.

Defeat the scout commander and search the cave
Prepare for the elite encounter
An elite soldier, also described in walkthroughs as the scout commander, waits inside. The enemy is the main combat gate for the evidence. A practical approach is to use parries to damage posture, then attack during the opening created by a stagger or failed enemy strike. The exact timing and weapon choice remain player-dependent, so do not treat one build as mandatory.
- Keep enough room to react to the commander’s attack animations instead of fighting against the cave wall.
- Prioritize posture damage when a parry opportunity is clear; repeated unsafe attacks can leave you trapped in the narrow space.
- After the enemy falls, sweep the arena and nearby edges before leaving so the quest item is not overlooked.
Collect the scouts’ letter
Loot the scouts’ letter or orders after the fight. This document is the evidence the Adjutant requested and advances the objective to the report stage. If the quest does not update, check the defeated enemy’s drop area and the floor around the arena; the letter is a pickup, not merely an automatic reward for entering the cave.
Check the optional chest
PowerPyx and related walkthrough coverage also identify a chest in this cave area that can contain Pure Blade Material. The chest is separate from the scouts’ letter, so collect both before leaving if you want the material. The letter is required for the quest; the chest is an additional exploration reward.
Return to the Adjutant and choose a response
Retrace the lift route and return to the wrecked carriage near the Guidepost and Demolished Path route. Speak to the Adjutant Sous-Officier again and report what you found. The conversation presents a truth-or-lie decision about the scouts’ fate or evidence.
Both dialogue branches complete “An Unheard Farewell” and preserve the Sleight of Hand Amber. The choice changes the additional follow-up rather than the core quest completion.

There is no evidence that either response removes the amber or prevents the quest from completing. Choose according to the dialogue outcome you want, or make a manual save before the conversation if you want to experience both branches. Because the additional rewards are described differently by available walkthroughs, use the item names and objective text displayed in your own game as the final authority after a patch.
What Sleight of Hand Amber does
Sleight of Hand Amber is the consistently reported main reward for this quest. Walkthrough descriptions associate it with faster firearm reloads and quicker weapon switching. The quest material does not establish a precise percentage, level requirement, or stacking rule, so the in-game item description should be used for the exact effect shown in your edition.
The cave’s possible Pure Blade Material chest is separate from the amber. Likewise, Aggressive Reconnaissance is listed as the quest achievement, not as a replacement for the amber reward.
Troubleshooting the route
The Adjutant is not offering the quest
- Verify that you are in Chapter 2’s Valley of Ashes.
- Pass the first Grenadier before searching for the carriage.
- Look before the descent over the large broken bridge, near the Guidepost and Demolished Path route.
- Interact with the carriage window; the Adjutant is inside the wreck rather than standing in the open.
The elevator will not move through the shaft
- Recheck the lift area for every glowing Nephtoglobin growth or orb.
- Destroy the targets rather than merely passing them.
- Continue through the nearby cave and exterior traversal section until the shaft route is fully opened.
- Return to the lift after completing that traversal; a partial route means the unlocking sequence is unfinished.
The cave entrance is missing
- Do not ride straight to the top and assume the cave is elsewhere.
- Watch the opposite wall while the lift is moving.
- Jump onto the narrow ledge halfway up the shaft, not the upper landing.
- Look for web-like material or gold vines and use fire transmutation on it.
The quest does not advance after the fight
- Confirm that the elite soldier or scout commander is defeated.
- Search the arena for the scouts’ letter or orders.
- Inspect the defeated enemy’s drop area and nearby floor before leaving.
- Return to the carriage only after the letter has been collected.
The choice rewards do not match a guide
Terminology and bonus descriptions differ among October 2026 walkthroughs. One source reports catalysts for the truth branch and a Remnant’s Return outcome for the lie branch, while the exact bonus contents are not consistent across all coverage. If a later patch changes the wording, follow the objective and item names shown in your game rather than an older label such as “scout commander,” “elite soldier,” “growth,” or “orb.”
Complete route checklist
- Reach Chapter 2’s Valley of Ashes and pass the first Grenadier.
- Before descending the large broken bridge, find the wrecked carriage near the Guidepost/Demolished Path route.
- Speak through the carriage window to the Adjutant Sous-Officier and accept the missing-scouts task.

- Collect the scouts’ letter or orders and, if desired, open the cave chest for the reported Pure Blade Material.
- Return to the Adjutant’s carriage and select truth or lie.
- Collect Sleight of Hand Amber and review the additional dialogue outcome.
Terminology and patch differences
Walkthroughs published in October 2026 use several names for the same landmarks and enemies. “Nephtoglobin growths” and “glowing orbs” describe the targets that unlock the lift. “Scout commander” and “elite soldier” describe the cave enemy. “Web barrier” and “gold vines” describe the material burned by fire transmutation. These wording differences do not indicate separate objectives.
If a future update changes an objective label, prioritize the live in-game objective, item description, and interaction prompt. The route remains identifiable by its fixed sequence: carriage, broken bridge, lift targets, mid-shaft ledge, fire barrier, commander, letter, and report.
