To estimate what a YouTube 24/7 stream adds to your electricity bill, measure the streaming equipment’s energy use at the outlet in kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by the usage rate on your electricity tariff. Compare setups over the same representative runtime and include the same equipment in each measurement. A watt reading alone is not enough to calculate the cost.
What to measure—and why watts are not enough
Watts describe power at a moment; kWh measure energy used over time. As the U.S. Energy Information Administration explains, “Watts measure power at a specific moment, but we use Watthours (Wh) to measure how much electricity is used over a period of time.” One kilowatt used for one hour equals 1 kWh. For a streaming-cost comparison, define the equipment boundary first. It might include the computer or encoder and any attached equipment whose electricity you want to attribute to the stream. There is no single required bundle: the important thing is to include the same devices in every setup being compared.

Measure the setup with a plug-in power meter
- Check compatibility. Choose a plug-in electricity monitor compatible with your outlet and electrical system. Check the specific model’s maximum rating, accuracy, and documented features before use; these vary by product. Efficiency Maine’s instruction sheet describes plugging a monitor into an outlet to measure electricity use. Efficiency Maine: Kill A Watt instructions
- Connect the equipment consistently. Plug the monitor into the wall outlet, then connect the equipment you have chosen to measure. Keep the same devices and connections for each comparison.
- Measure a representative period. If the meter accumulates kWh, record its reading at the start and end, or reset its energy counter if it supports that. Subtract the start reading from the end reading to get the energy used during the test. Record the test duration and operating configuration.
- If the meter only shows watts, collect readings over time. Record the measurement duration and take readings across representative operation. A single instantaneous watt reading cannot establish energy used over a changing period.
- Record stream and equipment conditions. Note the stream configuration, which devices were included, runtime, and measured kWh. If comparing settings, measure the actual equipment under similar conditions rather than inferring electricity use from video bitrate or resolution.
Calculate the electricity cost
For an accumulated-energy reading, use:
Measured kWh × applicable unit rate per kWh = energy charge for the measured interval

All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
For a steady watt reading, the conversion is:
Watts ÷ 1,000 = kW; kW × hours = kWh; kWh × unit rate = energy charge.
To estimate a daily or annual amount, first decide whether the test period reflects normal operation, then scale the measured energy to the longer runtime. Treat that result as an estimate: a short test may not represent a full day if equipment load changes. Efficiency Maine’s instruction sheet gives an annualization formula based on measured kWh, test hours, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, and a per-kWh price; its example rate is not a current universal rate. Use the rate that applies to your bill
Use the marginal usage rate for your location and the period measured, as shown on your current bill or tariff. If you have time-of-use pricing, apply the relevant rates to the hours in each pricing period rather than using one blended rate. Keep fixed daily standing or service charges separate from the incremental energy charge for the streaming equipment.
Electricity prices vary by location and customer category, so a national average is context, not a personalized rate. For context only, the EIA reported a preliminary 2025 U.S. annual average retail electricity price of 13.63¢ per kWh and a residential average of 17.30¢ per kWh, based on February 2026 Electric Power Monthly data. Its reported 2025 annual average ranged from 8.20¢ per kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢ per kWh in Hawaii. These are U.S. averages, not a substitute for your own tariff. EIA: Electric Power Monthly

Make the comparison fair
For each setup, report the same set of details so the result can be interpreted and repeated:
- Measurement duration and runtime represented
- Measured kWh
- Equipment included in the measurement
- Stream configuration and operating conditions
- Applicable unit rate or time-of-use periods
- Resulting usage-based energy charge
If you are choosing a meter, check whether the specific model accumulates kWh or only displays instantaneous watts, whether it calculates cost after a rate is entered, whether it retains readings, and whether it fits your outlet and electrical system. Do not assume a particular model has a feature or rating unless its current specification confirms it.

Keep encoder settings separate from power measurement
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings help with stream delivery and video quality; they do not predict how much electricity a particular computer and its attached equipment will use. Measure the equipment in each configuration you want to compare. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health, but its guidance does not map bitrate or resolution to computer wattage. Or let it run in the cloud
A plug-in meter measures the electricity used by local equipment; it does not measure or estimate a cloud service’s power consumption. If you would rather not leave a home computer running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
