For reliable results, capture and review snapshots in a consistent operating-system and browser environment; otherwise, environment changes can look like visual regressions.
Configure projects for the browsers you need
A Playwright project is a logical group of tests sharing a configuration. Projects let the same test suite run against multiple browser engines or other configurations, such as viewport sizes. By default, all configured projects run with the test suite, subject to available worker capacity. Include the engines relevant to your users and browser-support commitments rather than treating every possible configuration as mandatory. See Playwright’s project configuration guide.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For example, a configuration can define one project per engine:
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{
name: 'chromium',
use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'] },
},
{
name: 'firefox',
use: { ...devices['Desktop Firefox'] },
},
{
name: 'webkit',
use: { ...devices['Desktop Safari'] },
},
],
});
This example uses Playwright’s device presets to set browser-related defaults. You can also configure branded Chrome or Edge channels and emulated mobile devices. Keep the viewport and other settings comparable when the question is whether the browser engine changes the rendering; vary them deliberately when you are testing responsive behavior. Check the project documentation for current configuration options.

Write a visual comparison test and create its baseline
Navigate to the page, wait for the state you intend to test, and assert on its screenshot:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual comparison', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png');
});
Replace the example URL with your page. On its first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare the new capture with that reference. The assertion captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match before saving or comparing, which helps avoid recording an image while it is still changing. See Visual comparisons.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
Run the test suite with your configured projects. Since each project uses a different browser configuration, expect browser-specific snapshots rather than one universal image. Playwright’s snapshot naming can incorporate project or platform details; keep the resulting references together with the configuration and review changes before committing them.
Keep browser and host conditions consistent
A screenshot comparison can change even when your application code does not. Playwright identifies the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that may affect rendering. Fonts are another visible source of differences across browsers and platforms. Playwright’s best-practices guidance says: “For visual regression tests make sure the operating system and browser versions are the same.” See Playwright Best Practices.

- Generate baselines and compare against them in the same controlled environment.
- Keep Playwright and browser versions consistent for a baseline set; when upgrading, review the resulting snapshot changes as a deliberate update.
- Use a separate baseline for each browser/project configuration instead of assuming Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit will render identical pixels.
- Record or inspect the browser and viewport metadata when investigating a failure, so you can distinguish configuration drift from a page change.
Choose capture scope and noise controls deliberately
Decide whether the assertion should cover the full page or a particular element, and make that choice part of the test’s intent. A page-wide capture can catch broad layout changes; an element-level assertion can focus a test on a component. Snapshot options include a pixel-difference allowance such as maxDiffPixels, a perceived-color threshold, and a stylePath stylesheet for suppressing volatile elements. These options and details can vary by Playwright version; consult the PageAssertions API and visual comparison documentation.
Use masking or tolerances only for known sources of instability. A broader threshold can hide a real regression, so first establish why a region changes and whether that variation is irrelevant to the behavior you want to protect. If the unstable element is not part of the test’s purpose, a targeted style can suppress it without weakening comparisons elsewhere.

Review a failure before updating snapshots
When an assertion fails, inspect the expected, actual, and diff images rather than accepting the new output automatically. The Playwright Trace Viewer can show those images, a slider comparison, and browser and viewport metadata; this context helps identify whether the difference is a product bug, environment drift, or an intentional design change. See Trace Viewer.
- Check which project failed and confirm that its browser, viewport, operating system, and Playwright version match the baseline environment.
- Inspect the expected image, actual image, and diff to locate the changed pixels and determine whether the page is still in the intended state at capture time.
- Fix unintended application or test changes. If the visual change is intentional, review it and then regenerate expectations with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots. - Review and commit the changed snapshots alongside the test or design change that explains them.
Snapshot updates should be an explicit review action, not a routine way to make a failing test pass. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance covers snapshot generation and update behavior: Visual comparisons.

Troubleshoot common cross-browser comparison failures
- Many pixels differ after a machine or dependency change: the baseline and current run may use different operating systems, browsers, or settings. Re-run in the controlled baseline environment, or deliberately update and review the browser-specific baselines after a planned upgrade.
- Only one engine fails: inspect that project’s actual screenshot and metadata. A browser-specific rendering difference may be real, so do not replace it with another engine’s snapshot.
- The diff changes from run to run: the page may contain a volatile element or capture before the intended state is stable. Wait for the relevant state, then consider a narrowly targeted style to suppress only content outside the test’s purpose.
- A tolerance makes the test pass but obscures visible changes: reduce the allowance and identify the unstable region instead of widening the threshold indiscriminately.
- A snapshot update hides an unexplained failure: restore the prior expectation and investigate the diff and environment before accepting any new baseline.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off screenshot rather than a browser-by-browser regression suite, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from a single GET request. This does not replace Playwright’s engine-specific baselines for cross-browser visual regression testing. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
