For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream using H.264, YouTube recommends an 8 Mbps video bitrate and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum. If you use AV1 or H.265/HEVC, its live-encoder guidance recommends 6 Mbps, with a 2 Mbps minimum. Those are encoder settings—not a promise that a 4G connection in India can sustain them. Test upload speed where and when you will stream, then choose a bitrate your connection can hold reliably.
Which bitrate should you choose?
Choose the encoder codec first, then use the matching YouTube Live figure. The figures below are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not measured 4G speeds or guarantees of stable service. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

If you use H.264, start at 8 Mbps only when a representative upload test shows that your connection can sustain it. If your 4G upload fluctuates, a lower setting within YouTube’s published range may be more reliable. The listed minimum is not a stability guarantee. YouTube does not publish a special bitrate for Indian 4G networks or a universal upload-speed figure for them.

Actual upload capacity can change with carrier, coverage, congestion, device, location and time. A speed result from another place—or a download-speed result—does not tell you what the encoder can send from your streaming location. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound and that other people sharing a connection can limit the bandwidth available to an individual stream (YouTube filming tips for Live).

- Measure upload speed, not just download speed.
- Test at the actual streaming location and, where possible, at a time when network conditions resemble the planned broadcast.
- Account for other devices or people using the same mobile connection; their traffic competes with the encoder.
- Do not assume a separate hotspot or router will improve service. It is an optional connectivity path, not a fix for poor coverage or a guarantee of upload throughput. Check carrier compatibility and test it locally before relying on it.
Set up and test the stream before going live
- Select the codec and bitrate. In your encoder, choose H.264, AV1 or H.265/HEVC if supported, then set the corresponding bitrate from the table. If the measured connection cannot sustain the recommended rate reliably, use a lower rate within the published range rather than treating the recommendation as mandatory.
- Use YouTube’s live-encoder settings. YouTube lists CBR (constant bitrate), RTMP or RTMPS delivery, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and 128 Kbps stereo audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. Confirm that the encoder’s selected resolution and frame rate are 720p and 30 fps.
- Run a representative test. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream. A static test screen may not reflect a broadcast with movement and sound.
- Watch stream health during the broadcast. Check YouTube’s live stream health and any encoder or YouTube warnings. If the connection cannot keep up, reduce the encoder bitrate and reassess stability rather than relying on the 4G label or a single speed-test result.
YouTube’s recommendation is to “run[] a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A speed test is a useful check, but an actual pre-stream test and live monitoring matter because mobile network conditions can vary.
Do not use the prerecorded-upload bitrate for a live stream
YouTube’s separate prerecorded SDR upload table lists 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates. That figure applies to uploading a video file, not to live encoder input. For a live broadcast, use the codec-specific figures in YouTube’s live encoder guidance; see the separate recommended upload encoding settings only when preparing a prerecorded file.

Troubleshoot an unstable 720p30 stream
- Stream health reports connection or bitrate problems: Reduce the encoder’s video bitrate, then test again under similar conditions. The 8 Mbps H.264 and 6 Mbps AV1/H.265 figures are recommendations, not targets that every mobile uplink can hold.
- A speed test looks good but the live stream struggles: Verify that you measured upload, not download; repeat the test at the streaming location and account for other users and devices on the connection. Check stream health while broadcasting.
- The stream works at one time but not another: Mobile performance varies. Test close to the intended broadcast time and avoid assuming an earlier result will hold under different network conditions.
- You are unsure which bitrate table applies: Use the live-encoder table for a live broadcast. The 5 Mbps 720p upload recommendation is for prerecorded SDR video files, not live ingestion.
- You are considering a phone hotspot or LTE router: Treat it as an alternative connection to test, not a guaranteed upgrade. Check local carrier compatibility and verify upload performance before the event.
