Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCompare each new render against a separate reference screenshot for the same theme: light against light, dark against dark. Explicitly emulate each color scheme, keep the browser and capture conditions consistent, and review visual diffs rather than treating every changed pixel as a defect. A diff can catch rendering changes, but it does not replace checking contrast and accessibility in both themes.
Set up a fair light-versus-dark comparison
Theme testing has two different jobs: verify that each theme renders as intended, and identify unintended changes between builds. For the first, compare light with its own reference and dark with its own reference. Comparing a dark screenshot directly with a light screenshot will highlight the intended color changes, making it a poor regression test.

Choose representative pages and states
Cover the parts of the app most likely to behave differently when the theme changes. Include navigation, forms, dialogs, charts, and theme-sensitive imagery. For interactive pages, capture relevant states such as focused fields, disabled controls, open menus, and validation messages. Choose the viewport and browser environments you intend to support, and use those choices for both references and later runs.

Make the capture conditions repeatable
Use the same browser build and operating environment when capturing references and new screenshots. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep those conditions aligned as far as practical; otherwise, environment changes can create diffs unrelated to your code. Let the page settle before capture and control genuinely dynamic content, but do not mask the interface you are trying to test.

Capture and compare with Playwright
Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot() for comparing new screenshots with stored references, and browser emulation can set the color scheme to light or dark. Keep separate snapshots for the two schemes. The example below assumes a Playwright Test project with the test runner installed and a locally running app at http://localhost:3000.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page renders in light and dark themes', async ({ page }) => {
await page.emulateMedia({ colorScheme: 'light' });
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-light.png');
await page.emulateMedia({ colorScheme: 'dark' });
await page.reload();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-dark.png');
});
Run the test once to create the reference snapshots, then inspect and commit them with the test. On later runs, Playwright compares each screenshot with its matching reference. Review the diff before accepting a changed snapshot; update a baseline only after confirming that the visual change is intentional.

Keep references and review changes deliberately
- Use a stable, descriptive name for each page, state, and theme, such as
settings-dark.pngandsettings-light.png. - Store and review both theme references as part of the test change, so an intentional design update is visible rather than silently accepted.
- When a comparison fails, inspect the highlighted differences and classify them as an intended design change, rendering noise, or a defect before changing the baseline.
Set screenshot tolerances without hiding defects
Screenshot assertions wait for consecutive captures to stabilize, and Playwright’s screenshot assertion options allow controlled tolerance for differing pixels or perceived color. Tolerances can help with small rendering variations, but a permissive threshold may hide real regressions. Start narrowly, inspect diffs, and adjust only when you understand the variation being allowed.

Inspect theme-specific details beyond the page background
A dark theme is not just a dark page background. Check text, borders, icons, illustrations, photos, charts, focus indicators, and disabled states. Imagery may need a theme-specific treatment too; the web.dev guide to prefers-color-scheme discusses adapting images to a user’s color scheme.
Assess text and background contrast separately in each theme. A screenshot diff measures visual changes; it does not determine whether text is readable or an interface is accessible. Use the W3C’s guidance on minimum contrast and consult WCAG 2.1 as part of an accessibility review.

Troubleshoot unexpected screenshot diffs
Most of the screenshot changed
Check that the new capture uses the same theme as its reference, and verify the browser build, operating environment, viewport, and headless settings. A changed environment can affect rendering even when the application code is unchanged.
Only a dynamic region changed
Determine whether the content is expected to vary. If it is irrelevant to the check, control it or mask that specific region. Keep the mask small enough that it cannot hide nearby theme behavior under test.

The test is unstable around page load
Wait for the app’s relevant content to appear and settle before the screenshot. Playwright’s screenshot assertion handles stabilization by waiting for consecutive captures to match, but that does not make changing application content deterministic; control or isolate content that continues to change.
A small tolerance makes the failure disappear
Review the diff before increasing tolerance. A threshold can suppress minor pixel or color variation, but too much tolerance may also allow a genuine defect through. Prefer stabilizing the environment or controlling the specific dynamic source when possible.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its clean-shot handling can accept cookie or consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. You can turn those steps off. Responses identify page verdict and billing status; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
For repeatable theme testing, set the site’s theme through a supported URL or page state that your app recognizes, then capture each theme separately. The call below demonstrates one capture; it does not itself configure your app’s theme.
