To auto-start an FFmpeg stream when a Raspberry Pi boots, first confirm that your FFmpeg command works interactively, then run it through a systemd service that starts at boot, logs output to the journal, and restarts after unexpected exits. Keep the YouTube stream key private, and treat network-online ordering as a boot aid—not proof that the internet or YouTube is reachable.
What you need before configuring systemd
- A Raspberry Pi with an operating system installed on boot media. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide covers the basic setup and headless options.
- FFmpeg installed, plus a working input: for example, a video file, network source, or capture device. FFmpeg accepts these input types and writes output to a URL; see its command-line documentation.
- A YouTube Live stream configured in your channel’s Live Control Room, including the current ingest server and stream key. Use the server and encoder guidance shown for your stream; requirements can vary by setup and may change.
- A Linux user account that can access the chosen input and run FFmpeg.
Do not choose a Raspberry Pi model based on this guide alone: suitable hardware depends on the input, resolution, frame rate, and whether the Pi must encode video. No model-specific performance recommendation is established here.

Make the FFmpeg command work before automating it
Run the command from a terminal while logged in as the account that will own the systemd service. Verify the input, audio/video mapping, FFmpeg binary path, and YouTube output in the Live Control Room before putting the command into a unit. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP and shows the general pattern of sending FLV output to an RTMP URL; it also lists RTMPS as a supported variant. Use the ingest URL and protocol currently provided for your stream rather than assuming one endpoint works for every channel.

Check the current YouTube Live Control Room or official YouTube encoder documentation for the requirements that apply to your stream and selected ingest server.

Avoid putting a real stream key directly into a command that may be saved in shell history, shared, or exposed in process listings. The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s historical camera-streaming example warns that the key must remain secret; its old startup procedure uses SysV init, not the systemd steps below.
Store the stream key with restricted access
One simple approach is to keep a configuration file readable only by the service account. Create a dedicated directory and file, then restrict permissions. Replace streamuser with the Linux account you intend to use:

sudo install -d -o streamuser -g streamuser -m 700 /etc/ffmpeg-stream
sudo -u streamuser nano /etc/ffmpeg-stream/stream.env
sudo chmod 600 /etc/ffmpeg-stream/stream.env
Put the key in the file as an environment variable, for example YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=replace_with_your_key. Do not include the actual key in a public repository, screenshots, support posts, or logs. Limit access to the file and its parent directory; if you have already exposed a key, replace it in YouTube’s Live settings before continuing.

Create a systemd service
Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service with an editor such as sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. This template assumes you have replaced the example command with the tested command for your input, output URL, and key handling. It deliberately does not prescribe a camera device or YouTube encoder settings.

This is a unit-file outline, not a universal FFmpeg command. Confirm the executable location with command -v ffmpeg, substitute the input and output for your setup, and adjust codecs and mapping only after the interactive command is known to work. The example’s -re and stream-copy options are not appropriate for every source: live capture devices, files, and inputs with incompatible codecs may need different options. Do not place an expanded secret URL in the unit file.

network-online.target only helps when the operating system’s network manager implements and reaches that target. Raspberry Pi configuration documentation describes an option to wait for a network connection during boot; see Raspberry Pi configuration. Even with ordering, DNS, the internet route, or YouTube may still be unavailable when FFmpeg starts. Restart and inspect the service rather than treating the target as a guarantee of connectivity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Enable it, start it, and verify the stream
- Ask systemd to reload unit files and enable the service at boot:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service - Start it now to test the service under systemd:
sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service - Check its state and recent logs:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager - Confirm the stream is arriving in YouTube Live Control Room. A running process by itself does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid stream.
- After changing the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadagain, then restart withsudo systemctl restart ffmpeg-youtube.service. To stop it, usesudo systemctl stop ffmpeg-youtube.service; to prevent boot start, usesudo systemctl disable ffmpeg-youtube.service.
A restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg after a process exit. It cannot fix a rejected stream key, inaccessible camera, unsupported encoder, malformed command, or continuing network failure. Use journal messages to identify the underlying failure before changing restart behavior.

Troubleshoot common boot and stream failures
- Service fails immediately: inspect
systemctl statusand the journal for an invalid unit option, incorrect FFmpeg path, wrong working directory, or command-line error. After editing a unit, reload systemd before restarting it. - FFmpeg works in a terminal but not as a service: the service runs as its configured
Userwith a different environment and permissions. Check that this user can read the input, access the capture device, read the key file, and write any required files. - Stream does not start after boot: confirm the service is enabled, then examine boot-specific logs with
sudo journalctl -b -u ffmpeg-youtube.service. If the network was not ready, confirm that the system’s network manager supportsnetwork-online.target; ordering cannot ensure YouTube is reachable. - YouTube rejects or never receives the feed: check the currently displayed ingest URL, protocol, stream key, and encoder requirements in Live Control Room. Do not assume old example settings still apply. Protect the key, and replace it if it may have been exposed.
- Repeated restarts: use
sudo journalctl -fu ffmpeg-youtube.serviceto watch the error that precedes each exit. A restart loop can make a persistent input, credential, or network problem harder to spot; correct that cause rather than merely shortening the restart delay.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Automation does not grant rights to stream the material. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the current YouTube policies and restrictions relevant to your channel and content. A Pi service can keep sending a feed, but it cannot establish that the content complies with copyright rules or YouTube’s monetization and reused-content policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than learning to maintain a Pi service, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not live camera capture. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
