There is no single “best” video-game publisher. Revenue measures scale, bookings show customer purchases, margins reveal cost discipline, and a game pipeline indicates what might sustain results after the next launch. A useful comparison keeps fiscal periods and accounting policies consistent, separates recurring spending from full-game sales, and discounts pipelines that depend on one uncertain blockbuster.
The FY2025 figures for Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive illustrate the method. EA was larger on reported revenue and bookings, while Take-Two provides unusually clear evidence of digital, mobile and recurrent-spending exposure. Take-Two’s reported operating result was also distorted by a major goodwill impairment, demonstrating why a headline profit comparison can mislead.

Start with a consistent comparison basis
Before ranking publishers, define the period, currency and consolidation scope. Electronic Arts and Take-Two both report fiscal years ending March 31, but a calendar-year publisher would not be directly comparable without a date bridge. Record whether each figure comes from an annual filing, an earnings release or management guidance, and label estimates separately from reported results.

What each measure answers
- Net revenue: How much accounting revenue the company recognized during the fiscal period.
- Net bookings: The value of products and services purchased during the period, subject to the publisher’s definition and timing of revenue recognition.
- Gross margin: How much remains after direct costs of revenue, before operating expenses such as development, marketing and corporate overhead.
- Operating margin: The operating result as a percentage of revenue after operating expenses and any recorded impairments.
- Adjusted or normalized operating margin: A view that removes specified unusual items. It is useful only when the company clearly defines the adjustments and they are applied consistently.
- Cash generation: Whether accounting earnings convert into cash after working-capital movements and capitalized development spending.
These measures answer different questions. A publisher can lead on revenue while producing lower margins, or show strong gross margin while recording an operating loss after a large impairment.
FY2025 snapshot: Electronic Arts and Take-Two
The following table keeps the disclosed fiscal periods together and marks metrics that were not stated in the cited materials instead of filling gaps with estimates.
| Publisher | Fiscal year end | Net revenue | Net bookings | Gross margin | Reported operating result | Recurring-spending evidence | Platform and channel mix | Pipeline evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electronic Arts | March 31, 2025 | $7.463 billion (FY2025 results) | $7.355 billion (FY2025 results) | not stated in the cited FY2025 materials | operating-margin percentage not stated in the cited FY2025 materials | share not stated | mix not stated | EA reported 11 titles and more than 600 content updates in FY2024; Battlefield and skate were identified in the pipeline, with release timing not stated here. |
| Take-Two Interactive | March 31, 2025 | $5,633.6 million (FY2025 Form 10-K) | $5,648.0 million (FY2025 Form 10-K) | 54.3%, based on $3,062.2 million of gross profit | operating loss; percentage not stated, with a $3,545.2 million goodwill impairment recorded | 79.4% of FY2025 revenue came from recurrent consumer spending | Mobile represented 52.2% of revenue; digital online channels represented 96.4% | FY2025 releases included NBA 2K25, TopSpin 2K25, Civilization VII, PGA TOUR 2K25, WWE 2K25 and Game of Thrones: Legends; Grand Theft Auto VI was planned for May 26, 2026. |
EA’s chief financial officer, Stuart Canfield, described the FY2025 finish as having “broad-based momentum across the portfolio positioning the business for accelerated growth.” That statement is management’s characterization, not a substitute for checking the underlying releases, bookings and cash flows.
Revenue and bookings: measure scale without confusing timing
Net revenue is recognized under the company’s accounting rules. A full game, downloadable content or virtual currency may be recognized over a different period from the customer purchase. Bookings are intended to capture customer purchases during the period and therefore can move ahead of, or behind, recognized revenue.
Read the publisher’s bookings definition
Take-Two defines net bookings to include digital and physical products, licensing fees, merchandise, in-game advertising, strategy guides and publisher incentives. That breadth means the metric is not simply “units sold.” When comparing another publisher, verify whether its bookings definition includes similar categories, whether mobile advertising is included and how refunds or incentives are treated.

Use both numbers together
A revenue leader may have a larger installed business, while a bookings leader may have stronger current-period purchasing momentum. Neither measure alone establishes profitability or durability. A bookings figure that rises because of one launch can reverse in the following period; recurring spending and content updates provide a different kind of support.
Keep fiscal dates attached
EA’s fiscal year ends March 31. If a comparison adds a publisher reporting on December 31, show the different end dates beside every figure or create a clearly labeled trailing-twelve-month bridge. Mixing periods can make a launch appear to belong to one company’s year when it falls in another’s.

Margins: separate the core economics from accounting shocks
Gross margin is the first useful profitability checkpoint. Take-Two’s FY2025 gross profit of $3,062.2 million divided by $5,633.6 million of net revenue produces a 54.3% gross margin. That result says how much remained after direct costs; it does not account for the full cost of producing a multi-year pipeline, marketing launches or running corporate functions.
Why operating margin can collapse
Take-Two recorded a $3,545.2 million goodwill impairment in FY2025. Goodwill is an accounting asset created primarily through acquisitions; an impairment reduces reported earnings when the carrying value is no longer supported. It does not represent a new cash payment in the period, but it materially changes the reported operating result.
When an impairment is material, show two views:
- Reported view: Use the operating result exactly as filed, including the impairment.
- Analytical view: Add back only clearly identified unusual items, disclose every adjustment and label the result as adjusted or normalized rather than GAAP operating profit.
Do not call an adjusted margin “underlying” unless the adjustment policy is stable and recurring costs have not simply been reclassified. Acquisition amortization, restructuring, stock compensation and capitalized development can all affect comparability, so read the notes before constructing a normalized figure.

What to check in the notes
- Goodwill and acquired-intangible impairments.
- Amortization of acquisition-related intangibles.
- Restructuring charges and studio closures.
- Stock-based compensation.
- Capitalized software development and the timing of write-offs.
- One-time legal, tax or transaction costs.
A publisher with a lower gross margin may still produce better operating economics if it controls development and marketing costs. Conversely, a high gross margin can coexist with a weak operating result when projects are delayed, canceled or impaired.

Revenue quality: identify retention and platform exposure
Classify revenue by how it is earned, not merely by the label on the income statement. Full-game launches are often concentrated around release windows. Recurrent consumer spending includes virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and advertising that can continue between launches.
Take-Two’s disclosed mix
Take-Two reported that recurrent consumer spending represented 79.4% of FY2025 revenue. Mobile accounted for 52.2%, and digital online channels accounted for 96.4%. Together, these figures describe a business heavily shaped by retention, live operations and digital distribution rather than boxed-product shipments alone.
These percentages should not be treated as a quality score by themselves. Mobile can broaden reach but may carry different acquisition and platform-fee economics. Digital distribution can improve reach and reduce physical logistics while increasing dependence on platform policies. Recurrent spending can stabilize results, but it requires ongoing content, service reliability and player engagement.
Build a like-for-like mix table
For each publisher, collect the share of revenue or bookings from mobile, console, PC, digital channels and recurring spending. Use the same denominator wherever possible. If one company reports a bookings mix and another reports a revenue mix, keep the columns separate rather than implying direct comparability.

How to evaluate a game pipeline
A pipeline is more than a list of announced titles. It is an assessment of release cadence, production evidence, expected commercial weight, content-update capacity and the number of independent ways a company can succeed.
Catalog the announced releases
For every title, record the announced window, supported platforms, internal or external development status, franchise, genre and the date of the latest public update. Use a table such as:
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Title and franchise | Shows whether the pipeline adds new intellectual property or extends an existing audience. |
| Expected release window | Indicates when revenue may arrive; windows can change and should be rechecked. |
| Platforms | Reveals addressable audience and dependence on one hardware ecosystem. |
| Development status | Separates an announced concept from a product with visible production progress. |
| Content-update plan | Signals the capacity to support engagement after launch. |
| Commercial importance | Weights a small release differently from a flagship franchise entry. |
Use the disclosed EA and Take-Two examples
EA reported 11 titles and more than 600 content updates in FY2024, and described a pipeline that included Battlefield and skate. The release count and update volume indicate breadth and service capacity, but they do not reveal the sales outcome of each title or guarantee a date.
Take-Two’s FY2025 release list included NBA 2K25, TopSpin 2K25, Civilization VII, PGA TOUR 2K25, WWE 2K25 and Game of Thrones: Legends. The company stated that Grand Theft Auto VI was planned for May 26, 2026. Because a single flagship launch can dominate investor expectations, attach the date to the title and revisit it whenever the publisher updates its outlook.
Weight quality, not just quantity
Count releases, then apply a qualitative weight based on expected commercial importance and evidence of production progress. A pipeline with many small releases may provide cadence but less earnings power than one major launch. A pipeline dominated by one flagship may offer greater upside and greater downside if the title slips.
Best Value
Concentration risk and dependence on hit games
Concentration risk asks what happens if the largest franchise is delayed, poorly received or unable to sustain live-service spending. Estimate the share of revenue or bookings from the largest franchises when the publisher discloses it. If no percentage is provided, identify the dependency without inventing a number.
Take-Two’s risk disclosures specifically cite dependence on NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto, timely release, market acceptance and the need to manage development and marketing costs. Those disclosures are a reminder to test the business against a delayed flagship, not just to count announced projects.
For annual sports cycles, examine roster updates, licensing commitments and the cost of renewing the audience each year. For live-service games, examine the cadence and scale of content updates. For new intellectual property, give greater weight to production evidence and audience-building risk because there is less established demand.

A practical step-by-step publisher scorecard
- Freeze the period. Choose the latest comparable fiscal year and write each company’s fiscal-year end at the top of the worksheet.
- Capture scale. Enter net revenue and net bookings in the reported currency, then convert only if every company uses the same exchange-rate convention.
- Calculate gross margin. Divide gross profit by net revenue and retain the source figures so the calculation can be audited.
- Record reported operating margin. If the operating result is a loss or the percentage is not disclosed, say so rather than substituting an adjusted figure.
- Map adjustments. List impairments, restructuring, amortization, stock compensation and capitalized-development effects separately.
- Build the revenue-quality view. Add recurrent spending, mobile, console, PC and digital-channel shares with their denominators.
- Inventory the pipeline. Enter every announced title, timing, platform, franchise and latest production signal.
- Assign concentration flags. Mark dependence on a single franchise, annual cycle or live-service title.
- Stress-test timing. Model the effect of a six-month delay to the most important announced release without presenting the scenario as a forecast.
- Write the conclusion by dimension. Name the scale leader, margin leader, strongest recurring mix and deepest diversified pipeline separately. Avoid crowning one overall winner when the evidence answers different questions.
Common comparison mistakes
- Ranking by revenue alone: Scale does not reveal margin, cash generation or pipeline risk.
- Treating bookings as revenue: Purchases and accounting recognition can occur in different periods.
- Ignoring impairments: A goodwill write-down can overwhelm reported operating results without being a current-period cash cost.
- Mixing fiscal years: A December year-end and a March year-end can place the same launch in different reporting periods.
- Counting announcements as finished products: A title without a firm window or production evidence carries more execution risk.
- Using percentages without denominators: Revenue mix, bookings mix and segment mix are not interchangeable.
- Assuming more updates guarantee success: Content volume demonstrates operating capacity, not player reception or profitability.
- Hiding uncertainty in a league table: Mark undisclosed values as not stated and explain what additional filing or release would resolve the gap.
How often to refresh the comparison
Refresh financial metrics after each annual filing and update bookings, guidance and pipeline dates after quarterly results. Recheck release windows whenever a publisher changes its outlook, announces a delay or reports a major cancellation. Pipeline status is inherently more volatile than historical revenue, so date every entry and preserve the prior announcement for context.
For a current league table covering more publishers, obtain each company’s latest annual filing before publication. The EA and Take-Two examples demonstrate the framework, but they are not a complete ranking of every major publisher.
