How to Compare Urlbox Screenshots for Website Changes

A practical workflow for comparing Urlbox screenshots while controlling for viewport, scrolling, overlays, dynamic content, and rendering-engine changes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To spot visual changes with Urlbox, capture a baseline and a later version of the same page using the same URL and capture settings, then compare the images. Check any difference against the page’s text and metadata where available: a changed pixel region might be a real layout or content update, or it might come from lazy loading, an overlay, dynamic content, or a rendering-engine change.

Build a repeatable Urlbox comparison

  1. Choose the page and scope. Capture the full page if changes anywhere on it matter. Capture a specific element if you are monitoring one component; Urlbox documents both full-page and element captures in its screenshots documentation.
  2. Save a baseline. Record the URL and relevant render settings along with the image. Keep viewport dimensions, device pixel ratio, full-page mode, and scroll settings consistent in future runs. Urlbox exposes full-page, retina, scroll-increment, and scroll-delay controls in its render options documentation.
  3. Capture the page again later. Reuse the baseline’s capture conditions. If you change settings, treat the result as a new baseline rather than assuming every difference came from the website.
  4. Compare the images and investigate changed regions. Urlbox describes capturing image, text, and metadata together to help compare consecutive renders for layout shifts, copy updates, missing elements, and underlying HTML changes (Urlbox). Use those signals to classify the difference instead of treating every pixel variation as a site regression.

The sources reviewed do not establish a numerical accuracy or false-positive rate for Urlbox comparisons, so use the captures as evidence to review rather than as a quantified guarantee.

Choose full-page or element capture

Full-page capture

Use full-page mode when changes outside the initial viewport are in scope. Urlbox’s default full-page stitch mode scrolls through sections and stitches them into a capture. Its documentation says scrolling can help trigger lazy-loaded content and determine page height; stitch mode can also trigger animations while capturing sections. Urlbox describes this mode as optimized for accuracy over speed and says it uses heuristics to handle fixed or sticky elements, capturing most such elements once. See the screenshots documentation.

Native full-page capture

Urlbox’s native mode uses browser-native screenshot functionality. It is described as faster, but may not work well on every website; Urlbox positions it as optimized for speed over accuracy. If the page’s height, sticky elements, or lazy content make the result incomplete, compare against stitch mode and keep the selected mode fixed for both baseline and later captures (Urlbox screenshots documentation).

Element capture

Capture a selected element when the question is limited to a particular part of a page, such as a navigation area or product panel. This reduces unrelated parts of the page in the visual review, but the selected region must remain the same between captures. Urlbox documents element capture in its screenshots documentation.

Keep page behavior from masquerading as a website change

Lazy-loaded content and animation

Some content appears only after scrolling, and animations may look different depending on capture timing. Urlbox scrolls during default full-page captures; its scroll increment and delay options can be adjusted when content does not load or animations have not settled. Smaller increments may be needed to trigger some lazy-loaded elements, while delays can give animations time to finish (render options). Once a capture is reliable, retain those settings for subsequent comparisons.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

Sticky headers, footers, and page height

Section-by-section capture can encounter fixed or sticky elements repeatedly. Urlbox says its stitch mode uses heuristics to detect most and capture them once, but review these areas if a repeated header or footer appears in the image (screenshots documentation). A changed page height can also alter what the full-page image contains, so verify that the capture reached the intended end of the page.

Cookie banners, popups, and ads

Urlbox documents options to hide cookie banners, click an accept button, block ads, or block selected domains (screenshots documentation). These controls affect what is captured: if a banner is suppressed in one run but visible in another, the comparison reflects different capture conditions. Keep overlay and blocking choices consistent, or deliberately make a new baseline when the monitoring goal changes.

Infinite scroll

Urlbox says it limits full-page capture to three sections by default when it detects infinite scrolling; the allow_infinite option changes that behavior (screenshots documentation). Decide whether the monitor should cover the default portion or more of the feed, then use the same setting each time. Infinite feeds can also contain changing items, so a difference may be page data rather than a layout change.

Output format and image limits

Urlbox documents maximum dimensions for JPEG and WebP and recommends PNG for full-page images when size limits matter (screenshots documentation). If a long-page capture is constrained or unsuitable for comparison in one format, use the documented format guidance and keep the format consistent across captures.

Separate site changes from capture changes

  • Likely website change: the same region differs while URL, viewport, device pixel ratio, capture mode, scroll behavior, overlay handling, and format remain the same.
  • Likely loading or timing difference: images or sections appear inconsistently, especially after scrolling or while animations are active. Adjust scroll increments or delay, then repeat both baseline and later capture under the same settings.
  • Likely overlay or third-party-content difference: a cookie prompt, ad, popup, or widget appears in only one image. Check whether the capture options or page state changed before treating it as a site redesign.
  • Possible rendering-engine difference: the capture changes even though the monitored site and settings appear unchanged. Urlbox’s changelog notes that an engine update can cause visual differences for a particular use case; review the Urlbox changelog and validate a new baseline after an engine or settings change.
