How to Use Docker to Run a Prerecorded YouTube Live Stream on a VPS

A practical Docker and FFmpeg guide to sending prerecorded video from a VPS to YouTube Live, with RTMPS setup, bitrate guidance, loop choices, and fixes for common failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a prerecorded YouTube Live stream from a VPS by putting FFmpeg in a Docker container, connecting it to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and keeping the container running. Use RTMPS for the connection, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and decide whether the file should play once or loop. The example below is a starting point, not a universal command: the right FFmpeg options depend on your file and installed build.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says initial enablement can take up to 24 hours.
  • A VPS with Docker and Docker Compose installed, enough disk space for the media, and network access to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
  • A prerecorded video you have the right to stream, plus a decision about whether it should play once or repeat.
  • A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a repository, image, screenshot, or shared Compose file.

This method uses FFmpeg to read a file and send its encoded audio/video to YouTube. Docker packages the process; it does not remove the need to check codecs, bitrate, network capacity, or stream health.

Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s encoder workflow and enable live streaming if this is the channel’s first live broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule the broadcast. Select the stream settings appropriate to the planned output.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS server URL if YouTube provides it. Do not paste the key into a public terminal transcript, repository, or image.
  4. For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Then select Go live there when ready; sending an encoder feed does not necessarily mean the scheduled broadcast is already public.

Check the output settings before encoding

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709; its advanced audio recommendations include 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo. A particular FFmpeg build or source file may not support every combination, so check the file and build you actually use. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Output Codec YouTube minimum video bitrate YouTube recommended video bitrate
1080p, 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps H.264 3 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps AV1 or H.265 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 60 fps H.264, AV1, or H.265 3 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p, 30 fps H.264 1 Mbps 4 Mbps (H.264); 3 Mbps (AV1 or H.265)

These are YouTube’s published video-bitrate figures, not total network usage. Your VPS needs sustained outbound capacity above the selected video bitrate plus audio and protocol overhead, with headroom for variation. A universal VPS CPU or RAM size cannot be specified without knowing whether you stream-copy or transcode, the source format, output, and uptime needs.

Choose the ingestion protocol

For a typical VPS-to-YouTube encoder feed, use RTMPS. YouTube recommends it; it encrypts the RTMP connection. Google’s documentation describes RTMPS as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection” and specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and correct hostname handling for SNI. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.

Protocol Encryption Documented video codec support Practical consideration
RTMP No H.264 Unencrypted; generally not the first choice where RTMPS is available.
RTMPS Yes H.264 Good default for ordinary low-latency encoder ingest.
HLS Yes H.264 and HEVC Segment-based delivery generally has more latency than RTMP/RTMPS.
DASH Yes H.264 and VP9 Segment-based delivery generally has more latency than RTMP/RTMPS.

Protocol and codec compatibility can constrain your choice; consult YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison if RTMPS does not suit the required codec or workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put the media and stream settings on the VPS

Create a working directory

On the VPS, make a directory for the deployment and a media subdirectory. Copy the video into the media directory and check that it plays and contains the audio you expect. Mounting media read-only in Docker reduces the chance that the container alters the source.

mkdir -p ~/youtube-live/media
cd ~/youtube-live
# Copy your video into ~/youtube-live/media before starting the container.

Keep credentials out of the Compose file

Create a local .env file in the deployment directory with the RTMPS server URL and stream key, using the actual values from Live Control Room:

YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL=rtmps://YOUR_VALID_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_APPLICATION_PATH
YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=YOUR_STREAM_KEY

Use the exact RTMPS server URL YouTube supplies; the example host and path above are deliberately placeholders, not a real endpoint. Set restrictive file permissions and exclude the file from version control:

chmod 600 .env
printf '%sn' '.env' >> .gitignore

Compose injects environment variables into the container, and FFmpeg needs the resulting destination URL to connect. Environment variables are not a perfect secret vault: users with sufficient host or Docker access may be able to inspect container configuration, and the destination may be visible in process details or diagnostic output. Limit VPS access, avoid sharing logs, and rotate the key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Create a Docker Compose service

Save this as compose.yaml. It uses FFmpeg’s published container image and a shell command to build the RTMPS destination from the two local variables. Pin an image version or digest for a managed deployment rather than relying indefinitely on a moving tag. The command is an implementation example: validate it against your selected image, FFmpeg build, actual file, and current YouTube settings before relying on it.

services:
  streamer:
    image: lscr.io/linuxserver/ffmpeg:latest
    container_name: youtube-prerecorded-stream
    env_file:
      - .env
    volumes:
      - ./media:/media:ro
    restart: unless-stopped
    command:
      - -hide_banner
      - -loglevel
      - info
      - -re
      - -stream_loop
      - "-1"
      - -i
      - /media/program.mp4
      - -c
      - copy
      - -f
      - flv
      - "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"

Replace program.mp4 with the media filename. The -re option reads the file at its media rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. -c copy attempts to pass through the existing encoded tracks without re-encoding. That is efficient when the source tracks, container handling, frame rate, bitrate, and audio are acceptable to YouTube, but it is not a conversion step and is not guaranteed to work for every file. If the file has no audio, a silent or invalid audio configuration can result.

The environment-variable interpolation in Compose occurs when Compose renders the YAML. Run the commands from the directory containing .env so Compose can read those values. Because the expanded destination contains the key, be cautious with rendered configuration output and logs; do not post them publicly.

Start, inspect, and stop the container

  1. Check that Compose can parse the file: docker compose config -q. Do not share rendered output, which may reveal interpolated secrets.
  2. Start the service: docker compose up -d.
  3. Inspect the FFmpeg output: docker compose logs -f streamer. Look for connection errors, input details, and ongoing frame and time progress. Stop following logs with Ctrl+C; this does not stop the container.
  4. Open Live Control Room and confirm the preview appears. Check the audio and stream-health status before taking a scheduled broadcast live.
  5. To stop the stream intentionally, run docker compose down, then use Live Control Room controls as appropriate. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived when ended; that archive behavior is separate from Docker’s restart policy.

When to transcode instead of stream-copy

If the source codec, bitrate, frame rate, pixel format, or audio does not meet the target, replace -c copy with explicit video and audio encoding options. The values below illustrate a 1080p30 H.264/AAC target, not a prescription for every source or deployment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
-vf scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2
-r 30
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2

For 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame, two-second GOP; if you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to keep the keyframe interval at two seconds. The example’s 10 Mbps video target matches YouTube’s published recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30. Encoding at that target increases VPS CPU requirements compared with stream-copying. Test representative content for aspect ratio, frame pacing, audio mapping, and encoder capacity before using it continuously. If the input lacks audio, do not assume these audio options create meaningful program audio.

Looping, scheduling, and recovery are separate decisions

One broadcast or repeated playback

Remove -stream_loop -1 if the file should play once and the FFmpeg process should finish at end-of-file. Leave it in for a single file that should repeat. A playlist of multiple videos needs an intentional playlist/input strategy; changing the input format can change whether streams are copied or transcoded and how transitions behave.

Container restarts

restart: unless-stopped asks Docker to restart the container after a process exit, subject to Docker’s restart-policy behavior. It does not schedule broadcasts, choose the next file, or guarantee a smooth YouTube reconnection. In particular, a finite input that ends successfully may not be restarted in the way you expect. Test the exact end-of-file and failure behavior and choose an explicit loop or supervisor policy rather than treating the restart setting as a playlist feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stream key and broadcast lifecycle

A stream key is associated with the ingest configuration in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the scheduled event and encoder are using the intended stream settings. If the connection drops, watch both FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s Live Control Room before deciding whether to restart the container or re-establish the broadcast.

Troubleshooting

  • No preview or connection timeout: verify the stream key, exact server URL, RTMPS protocol, outbound firewall access, and that the VPS can reach port 443. Confirm that Compose loaded the intended .env values.
  • TLS or certificate/SNI error: check that the URL is the RTMPS endpoint supplied for ingestion, uses port 443, and retains the correct hostname. Google identifies endpoint, protocol, port, and SNI handling as relevant RTMPS connection requirements.
  • Preview appears but health is poor: inspect YouTube’s stream-health details for low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch. Check that the VPS’s sustained egress can carry the selected video bitrate plus audio and overhead.
  • Video but no sound: inspect the file’s audio tracks and FFmpeg input/output mapping. Ensure audio is encoded in a supported format such as AAC or MP3 and that the intended track is actually present in the output.
  • FFmpeg exits at the end of the video: confirm whether -stream_loop -1 is present and whether repeated playback is intended. A Docker restart policy alone is not a reliable substitute for deciding loop behavior.
  • CPU saturation or dropped frames after enabling encoding: transcoding is computationally different from stream-copying. Reduce the output workload or use a VPS capable of sustaining the chosen encoder settings; there is no universal CPU/RAM size without a defined source and output.
  • YouTube rejects or limits the broadcast: check the channel’s live eligibility and ensure you have rights to the video, music, and other included material. A technically valid feed does not grant copyright permission or guarantee compliance with YouTube’s monetization and reused-content policies. Review the applicable copyright safety checklist before streaming material you did not create or license.

Copyright, reused content, and viewer expectations

Only stream media you own or have permission to broadcast, including music and any third-party footage. A live encoder feed does not bypass copyright claims or YouTube’s channel policies. Repeating prerecorded material also does not automatically make it original or eligible for monetization: assess the channel and the content under YouTube’s current rules. Disclose or contextualize a prerecorded program honestly where viewers could otherwise mistake it for a live camera broadcast. This article does not establish that any specific channel or video qualifies for monetization.

Cost and operating trade-offs

A Docker VPS gives you control over the media process, files, and scheduling logic, but you are responsible for VPS billing, storage, bandwidth, updates, monitoring, and recovery. Transcoding adds CPU demand; stream-copying can reduce encoding work but only fits compatible source media. There is no single reliable monthly cost or server size without specifying provider, location, media, output bitrate, and operating schedule. You can estimate transfer time with the upload-time calculator and compare cloud and PC costs with the cloud vs PC cost calculator.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining a VPS and FFmpeg process is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
