Compare products by dividing each price by the same kind of quantity, expressed in the same unit. The lower unit price is usually the better price for equivalent products—but package size, product differences, promotions, fees, and whether you can use the amount all matter.
How to compare unit prices
- Choose a matching measure. Compare weight with weight, volume with volume, or count with count. A price per ounce by weight is not the same measure as a price per fluid ounce.
- Convert to a shared unit. If one shelf label gives a price per pound and another per ounce, convert both to the same basis. One pound is 16 ounces, so $4 per pound equals $0.25 per ounce. Convert metric quantities in the same way: compare grams with grams or kilograms with kilograms.
- Divide price by quantity if needed. Unit price = package price ÷ package quantity in the chosen unit. For example, a 24-ounce package costing $4.80 works out to $0.20 per ounce. This is an illustrative calculation, not a current product price.
- Compare equivalent products. A lower cost per unit means more quantity for the same money when the products are comparable. Check that their ingredients, concentration, quality, features, or durability suit the same purpose.
A phone calculator—or mental arithmetic—can handle the division. You do not need a separate calculator to compare prices.

What a unit price tells you—and what it does not
A unit price expresses a product’s price against a common measure, such as a kilogram, liter, pound, fluid ounce, or count. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes unit pricing as a way to compare price and value across package sizes and retail channels, including e-commerce, in its 2025 Unit Pricing Guide (SP 1181-2025). NIST calls it “one of the best tools available to consumers to facilitate value and price comparison.”

It does not tell you whether the products are interchangeable, whether you will use the full amount, or whether a displayed price depends on special conditions.

Is the bigger package actually a better deal?
Check the unit price rather than assuming that a bigger pack is cheaper. Also consider the total amount you must pay and whether you can use the larger quantity before it spoils, expires, or otherwise becomes unsuitable. A lower unit price can still be poor value if part of the purchase goes to waste.
Watch for package-size changes
A familiar package may contain less while keeping a similar appearance or price. Check the package’s net contents and the shelf unit price instead of relying on its shape, brand, or total price alone. Serving size or the number of servings may offer a clue that contents changed, but neither replaces checking net quantity and unit price. The FTC explains how unit prices help shoppers compare the amount received in its guidance on shrinking packaging.

Check promotions and the full checkout cost
Before choosing a deal, find out whether its listed price requires buying multiple items, joining a rewards program, or meeting another condition. For online orders, compare the total cost—not just the product price—including shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other applicable fees. Read the product description and deal terms. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends checking costs, fees, promotional conditions, and product descriptions.

In the United States, there is no federal mandate requiring unit pricing; state or territorial rules may require it. NIST’s 2025 guide reported that 16 states and three territories had unit-pricing laws or regulations in effect when it was published. Requirements vary and can change, so check current rules in your jurisdiction if you need a legal answer. The guide is retailer best-practice guidance designed to complement applicable regulations, not a guarantee that every product or retailer will display a unit price.

If no unit price is posted, calculate it from the package price and quantity. When comparing items in a category, use a consistent, meaningful unit; NIST’s guide discusses consistency as a best practice. The UK government’s consumer information on unit pricing also explains how prices for differently sized packs can be compared using a common weight or volume basis; it is not guidance on U.S. legal requirements.

A quick checklist before you buy
- Are you comparing the same kind of measure—weight, volume, or count?
- Are both prices expressed in the same unit, and does “ounce” mean weight or fluid volume?
- Are the products equivalent for your needs, not just in the same broad category?
- Does the price require a promotion, membership, or multiple-item purchase?
- For an online order, have you counted applicable fees and delivery costs?
- Will you use the quantity before it spoils or becomes unsuitable?
